Tour Overview
Munich · Salzburg · Lucerne · Zurich — 9 Days / 8 Nights
A 7-night Germany, Austria, and Switzerland tour package from India for people who want three countries without a tour bus - two nights in Munich, two in Salzburg with the city card in your pocket, and three in Lucerne for Mt. Pilatus, with Zurich seen on the way to your flight home. Every leg between them is a train, including the Railjet over the Arlberg Pass, which is a sightseeing day in its own right rather than a transfer. May to June and September to early October give the best weather across all three countries at once. Priced per person, two adults in a double room - land package, international flights excluded. Tell us your dates, and we will build the quote around them.
Key features of this package
Itinerary — day by day
MunichSalzburgLucerneDeparture
DAY 01
Arrive Munich, and straight into the old centre
Airport train - Marienplatz - ViktualienmarktMUNICH
Arrive Munich, and straight into the old centre
Airport train - Marienplatz - Viktualienmarkt
- AIRPORT TO CITY
- S1 or S8 from under the terminal, about 45 min. Ticket pre-issued.
- THEN WALK
- The hotel is central, so Marienplatz is on foot. Best in the hour before dark.
- VIKTUALIENMARKT
- Open food market with a beer garden in the middle. Stalls close around 18:00.
- JET LAG
- Stay up to a normal bedtime. Day 2 is a full walking day.
Munich, 3-Star Central
2 nights - Breakfast - Walking distance of Marienplatz
- Stay Two nights in a central 3-star double room with a double bed and breakfast, priced per person, two adults to the room.
- Position Between the Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz, so the airport train arrives at one end of your walk and the old town is at the other. No city transport needed on either Munich day.
- Meals Breakfast both mornings. No dinner is included on any night of this package.
- Being straight with you Munich hotel rates swing harder than anywhere else on this route. Oktoberfest and the big trade fairs can double them, and we will not sell you those dates at this price - we will tell you and quote the real figure.
Munich Airport to the City
S-Bahn, about 45 min - ticket pre-issued
- S1 or S8 to Munich Hauptbahnhof Every 10 minutes between them, about 45 minutes, station directly under the terminal complex. Your ticket is issued before you travel.
- Then a short walk The hotel sits between the station and the old town, so there is no second leg.
- Prefer a private car A private airport transfer can replace the train, priced on request. Worth it with a late-night arrival or heavy luggage; otherwise the train is faster in traffic.
Mt Pilatus Golden Round Trip (Included)
2,128m - boat, cogwheel, cable car, gondola
- The loop, in order Lake Lucerne boat to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway to the summit, aerial cable car down to Frakmuntegg, small gondolas to Kriens, bus back into town. Four modes, one ticket, and you never retrace a step.
- The steepest cogwheel in the world Up to 48 per cent gradient, which is why the carriage seats are built in tiers. Thirty minutes of it, and the reason this is the Swiss day rather than another lake cruise.
- At the top Two terraces, a short ridge path between them, and 73 named peaks on a clear day. Go up early - Pilatus builds its own cloud by mid-afternoon more often than not.
- Said plainly No mountain operator in Switzerland refunds a clouded-in summit, and we will not pretend otherwise. There is no second summit day in this itinerary, so this one is weather-dependent and we would rather you knew now.
DAY 02
Munich on foot - palace, market, river surfers
Glockenspiel - Residenz - Englischer GartenMUNICH
Munich on foot - palace, market, river surfers
Glockenspiel - Residenz - Englischer Garten
- GLOCKENSPIEL, 11:00
- 43 bells, 32 figures, about 12 minutes. Stand on the far side by the Fischbrunnen.
- MUNICH RESIDENZ, INCLUDED
- The Wittelsbach palace, and the only paid entry in Munich. Two hours is right.
- EISBACH WAVE
- River surfers in wetsuits at the south end of the Englischer Garten. Free, and nobody expects it.
- WHERE THE MONEY GOES
- Munich is almost all free. The budget is saved for Switzerland, where nothing is.
Salzburg, 3-Star Near the Old Town
2 nights - Breakfast - Salzburg Card included
- Stay Two nights in a 3-star double room with a double bed and breakfast, within walking distance of the old town or a short bus ride your card already covers.
- Your 48-hour Salzburg Card comes with the stay fortress and funicular, Mozart's Birthplace, DomQuartier, the museums, the river cruise, the Untersberg cable car and every city bus. It is in the package, not sold to you on arrival.
- Meals here Breakfast both mornings. No dinner is included on any night.
- Being straight with you Salzburg is a small city with a big festival. During the Salzburg Festival in late July and August rooms are scarce and dear, and the same is true over Christmas and Easter. Tell us your window early.
Munich to Salzburg
About 1 hr 30 min - direct railjet
- Direct, about 1 hr 30 min Roughly 140 km, around 18 direct trains a day across the operators, so this leg is forgiving if a flight lands late.
- Sit on the right The Chiemsee comes up about 40 minutes out, then the first real mountains. It is a short leg with a surprisingly good window.
- Ticket basis Second class, pre-issued. Advance fares on this leg are booked for your dates, which is why the departure is named in your quotation rather than chosen on the day.
Salzburg Card, 48 Hours (Included)
Fortress - Mozart - DomQuartier - buses
- Hohensalzburg Fortress and its funicular Begun in 1077, among the largest fully preserved castles in Europe, and never taken by force. Entry and the cable railway up are both on the card.
- Mozart's Birthplace Nine Getreidegasse, where he was born in 1756 and lived until seventeen. His childhood violin is there. Thirty to forty minutes.
- Also on the card, at no extra cost T he DomQuartier state rooms and cathedral terrace, the Salzburg Museum, the Salzach river cruise, the Untersberg cable car, the Monchsberg lift and every city bus for the full 48 hours.
- Why it is in the package Bought one by one, the fortress, Mozart's house, the DomQuartier, the river cruise and the Untersberg come to well over double the card. Putting the card in instead is the single biggest saving on this itinerary.
DAY 03
Munich to Salzburg, and a first walk through it
1 hr 30 min by railjet - Mirabell - GetreidegasseSALZBURG
Munich to Salzburg, and a first walk through it
1 hr 30 min by railjet - Mirabell - Getreidegasse
- MUNICH TO SALZBURG, 1 HR 30 MIN
- Direct railjet, 18 a day. Sit on the right for the Chiemsee.
- MIRABELL GARDENS
- Free, and the classic view back to the fortress. Best in late afternoon light.
- GETREIDEGASSE
- Mozart's street, guild signs still hanging. Walk it after the day-trip coaches leave.
- SALZBURG CARD STARTS
- Handed over on arrival, runs 48 hours. Tonight's buses and all of tomorrow.
Lucerne, 3-Star Central
3 nights - Breakfast - The longest stay of the trip
- Stay Three nights in a central 3-star double room with a double bed and breakfast - the one base where you unpack properly.
- Position Near the station and the boat quay, which matters because the Pilatus day starts on the water and the last morning starts on a train. Both begin on foot from the door.
- Meals here Breakfast all three mornings. No dinner is included on any night.
- Being straight with you Lucerne is the most expensive of the three towns to sleep in and sells out earliest for July and August. It is also where three of the seven nights are, so it carries the largest share of this package's cost.
Salzburg to Lucerne, over the Arlberg
About 6 hrs with one change - reserved seats
- Salzburg to Zurich, about 5 hrs Direct Austrian railjet via Innsbruck and the Arlberg Pass, with seats reserved. Only two direct trains a day run the whole way, so the timing comes from the timetable.
- Zurich to Lucerne, about 50 min A same-level change at Zurich HB onto a direct train.
- This leg is an attraction The Arlberg Tunnel dates from 1884 and is the highest point on the line. Coming down the Swiss side the Walensee runs alongside with cliffs rising straight from the water.
- Why no night train A Nightjet runs this corridor and is cheaper on paper, but it arrives before hotel check-in and costs you a proper night's sleep in the middle of a short trip. We do not put it in the package. Ask if you want it anyway.
What You Walk To, for Nothing
Munich, Lucerne and Zurich are mostly free
- Munich The Marienplatz Glockenspiel, the Viktualienmarkt, Odeonsplatz and the Hofgarten, the Englischer Garten and the Eisbach surfers. The Residenz is the one paid entry; everything else here costs nothing.
- Lucerne The Chapel Bridge of 1333 with its painted rafters, the Spreuer Bridge with its complete Dance of Death cycle, the Lion Monument, and four climbable towers of the Musegg Wall. All free.
- Zurich, on the way out The Lindenhof terrace, the Grossmunster, Bahnhofstrasse and the lake promenade at Burkliplatz - a whole afternoon, all free, on a ticket you already hold.
- Why this matters to the price Three of the four cities on this route are almost entirely free to see. That is what lets a 7-night, three-country trip carry one city card and one summit and still price where it does. Adding paid attractions is what breaks it.
DAY 04
A fortress on a rock, and the house Mozart was born in
Hohensalzburg - Mozart's Birthplace - DomQuartierSALZBURG
A fortress on a rock, and the house Mozart was born in
Hohensalzburg - Mozart's Birthplace - DomQuartier
- HOHENSALZBURG, ON THE CARD
- Begun 1077, never taken by force. Funicular included. Go at opening.
- MOZART'S BIRTHPLACE, ON THE CARD
- Nine Getreidegasse, born 1756. His childhood violin is there. Half an hour.
- DOMQUARTIER, ON THE CARD
- Archbishops' state rooms and the cathedral terrace. Most visitors miss it.
- ALSO ON THE CARD
- River cruise, Salzburg Museum, Untersberg cable car, city buses. Nothing more to pay.
4-Star, and the Alternatives
Quoted before you pay - requested, never promised
- 4-star, all seven nights Available in all three towns. The jump is smallest in Munich, where 4-star barely costs more than 3-star, and largest in Lucerne. We quote the figure rather than printing it, because it moves with the season.
- Upgrade one town only If you upgrade anywhere, upgrade Lucerne - three of the seven nights are there and a lake-side room is worth more than a better room in a city you leave at 09:00.
- Room requests A higher floor, a quiet side, a double bed rather than two singles, a late check-out on the last morning. All passed to the property as requests. None of them is something we can confirm in advance, and we will not tell you otherwise.
- How this works Any upgrade raises the package price and we show you the new total, not a headline that stays the same.
Why There Is No Swiss Travel Pass Here
We priced it - on three Swiss days it loses money
- What we checked A Swiss Travel Pass and a Swiss Half Fare Card, both against the actual fares on this itinerary - the Zurich to Lucerne leg, Mt Pilatus, and the departure run to the airport.
- Both lose There are only three Swiss days here and one ticketed mountain. The card's own cost is more than the half it would save, and the pass costs several times that. So you travel on point-to-point tickets, all pre-issued.
- Where it flips Add a second summit or a fourth Swiss night and the Half Fare Card starts to pay. If you extend the Swiss leg, ask us to re-run it rather than assuming - the answer changes with the itinerary, not with the country.
- Germany and Austria No pass either. Two advance point-to-point tickets beat any regional pass on this routing, and the Salzburg Card already covers city transport there.
What You Can Add, and What It Costs You
Each one priced in your quotation, not here
- Neuschwanstein, the big one The castle everyone pictures when they think of Bavaria. It is a long day trip from Munich and needs a third Munich night to do without ruining Day 2 - so it is an add-on with an extra night attached, not a squeeze. Castle tickets are timed and sell out weeks ahead.
- A Mozart concert in the fortress Chamber concerts run most evenings in the Hohensalzburg Prince's Chamber. Your card gets you up there but not into the concert. Fills quickly in festival season.
- A full Lake Lucerne cruise The Pilatus day includes the boat leg to Alpnachstad, but the long sailing down to Fluelen and back is a different thing again - three hours of lake with the mountains closing in. Fits Day 7, which is left light on purpose.
- How add-ons work Every figure is per person and confirmed in writing before you pay. Adding one raises the package price and we show you the new total rather than keeping a headline that no longer applies.
DAY 05
Over the Arlberg Pass into Switzerland
Railjet, reserved seats - the scenic day of the tripLUCERNE
Over the Arlberg Pass into Switzerland
Railjet, reserved seats - the scenic day of the trip
- SALZBURG TO ZURICH, ABOUT 5 HRS
- Direct railjet, seats reserved, via Innsbruck and the Arlberg.
- WATCH FOR
- The Tirol valleys, then the 1884 Arlberg Tunnel. The Walensee appears on the Swiss side.
- ZURICH TO LUCERNE, 50 MIN*
- One change at Zurich HB, same level. A walk, not a scramble.
- EAT BEFORE YOU BOARD
- Salzburg station beats the dining car on price and quality. Keep the window seat.
Lucerne to Zurich Airport, via Zurich
Break of journey - the Zurich stop is free
- How the free stop works A Swiss point-to-point ticket is valid for the whole day and allows a break of journey. One Lucerne to Zurich Airport ticket therefore buys the afternoon in Zurich as well.
- Luggage Lockers at Zurich HB. Use them first - the stop only works if you are not dragging bags around the Old Town.
- Airport leg About 10 minutes from Zurich HB, four trains an hour. Rail timings shown here are typical, not guaranteed connections.
- Morning flight instead We move the last night from Lucerne to Zurich. That changes the price and is quoted before you book.
DAY 06

Zurich on the way out, then home
Break of journey - Old Town - airport in 10 min
- LUCERNE TO ZURICH, 50 MIN
- Your ticket runs through to the airport, and the Zurich stop costs nothing extra.
- LOCKERS FIRST

- THREE FREE HOURS
- Lindenhof, the Grossmunster, Bahnhofstrasse and the lake at Burkliplatz. All within a walk.
- TO THE AIRPORT
- Ten minutes from Zurich HB, four trains an hour. Allow three hours before an international flight.

Full policy details
Cancellation Policy
- 10 or more calendar days before departure: a 30% cancellation charge applies to the eligible package amount. Choose a 70% refund in USDC or 100% of the eligible amount as Atravelx Travel Credit.
- Less than 10 calendar days before departure: 100% non-refundable. No refund or Travel Credit is ordinarily issued.
- After travel commences, or no-show: non-refundable. No refund or Travel Credit is ordinarily available.
- Days are counted as calendar days to the scheduled departure date, in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). The timestamp on your written request fixes when Atravelx received it.
- Cancellation requests must be made in writing through an authorised Atravelx channel: your concierge, info@atravelx.com or WhatsApp +91 92500 00511. A phone call alone does not cancel a booking until it is confirmed in writing.
- Quote the booking reference, the lead traveller's name and the services affected. Atravelx may ask for identity or payment verification before acting on a request.
- A reason is not needed to qualify under the 10-day window.
- Cancelling some travellers, rooms, nights or services is a package amendment, not a cancellation. It does not qualify for the 10-day refund or credit on its own, and it can change the per-person price for the remaining travellers.
Atravelx Travel Credit
- Travel Credit is issued as an Atravelx Credit Note for 100% of the eligible amount actually paid, denominated in USDC.
- The 30% cancellation charge is waived when you choose Travel Credit instead of a refund.
- Credit can be used towards any eligible service booked through Atravelx: holiday packages, stays, flights, transfers, sightseeing, car rental, visa assistance and other eligible services.
- Travel Credit is non-cash. It cannot be withdrawn, exchanged for cryptocurrency or fiat currency, or transferred to another person, unless Atravelx agrees in writing.
- The validity period and expiry date are stated on the Credit Note.
- Prices at the time of the new booking apply. Travel Credit does not hold the same hotel, room, destination, dates, itinerary, supplier, activity, package or price.
- If the new booking costs more, you pay the difference in USDC. If it costs less, the balance stays on the Credit Note under its terms.
- Once you choose Travel Credit, the choice is final. It is not later converted into a refund.
Date Change Policy
- Request date changes 10 or more calendar days before the scheduled departure date.
- A date change is not guaranteed. It depends on hotel, transfer and activity availability, supplier approval, revised room rates, seasonal pricing, blackout dates, peak-season supplements, transport costs, fare differences, supplier amendment charges and revised itinerary costs.
- If the revised package costs more, you pay the difference in USDC. Supplier amendment or date-change charges may also apply.
- A date change is confirmed only when Atravelx confirms the revised arrangements in writing.
- Requests made less than 10 calendar days before departure depend on supplier approval and cannot be guaranteed.
- A postponement or date change is not a cancellation. It does not by itself create a refund or Travel Credit entitlement.
Bundled Holiday Packages
- Atravelx holiday packages are booked and priced as bundled travel arrangements made up of several interconnected services.
- Individual components of a confirmed package cannot ordinarily be cancelled separately.
- Removing a service does not automatically entitle you to a proportionate refund or Travel Credit.
- Any request to remove, replace or modify a component is treated as a package amendment, subject to supplier approval, availability, revised pricing, amounts recoverable and applicable charges.
- A value shown against an individual service does not mean it was separately contracted or can be independently cancelled.
Visa & Travel Documentation
- Travellers are responsible for a valid passport, the right visa, transit visas, entry permits, immigration documents, health documentation and any other paperwork required by the destination or a transit country.
- Visa decisions are made solely by the relevant government, embassy, consulate or immigration authority. Atravelx does not guarantee approval, processing time or appointment availability.
- A visa refusal, delay or failure to obtain a visa does not override the cancellation conditions unless Atravelx confirms otherwise in writing.
- Government, embassy, visa application centre, biometric, courier and processing fees may be non-refundable once paid or submitted.
Refund Processing & Timeline
- Atravelx acknowledges a cancellation request within 2 working days. Acknowledgement confirms receipt, not eligibility or amount. After reviewing the booking, Atravelx confirms in writing which services are cancelled, the refundable and non-refundable components, the deductions and the refund amount.
- Approved refunds are processed within 45 working days from the date Atravelx confirms in writing that the refund is approved.
- The 45 days do not run from the booking date, the date you first asked to cancel, or the departure date.
- Working days exclude Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in the United States and India.
- Refunds are calculated and paid in USDC. The refund is the eligible package amount in USDC as shown on your invoice, less the cancellation charge and any supplier deductions.
- If you paid in another cryptocurrency, the refund is still the USDC value of the eligible amount at the time of payment, not the number of coins you sent. Atravelx is not liable for changes in the market value of any coin between payment and refund.
- Refunds are sent to the wallet address the payment came from, on the same network. If that is not possible, you may nominate another wallet, which Atravelx verifies in writing before sending. Atravelx is not responsible for funds sent to a wallet address you supplied incorrectly.
- If you paid by card or bank transfer through an Atravelx payment partner, the refund goes back to that payment method where the partner supports it. Otherwise another method is agreed in writing.
- Blockchain confirmations, payment partners, card issuers and banks may add time before the funds show in your wallet or account.
- Where Atravelx cancels a confirmed booking for reasons within its reasonable control, all amounts received for the cancelled services are refunded in full, initiated within 7 working days. An alternative itinerary or Travel Credit may be offered, but you are not required to accept it instead of the refund.
- An approved refund is not replaced with Travel Credit unless you expressly agree, or the supplier itself provides only a credit or voucher under conditions disclosed before booking.
Supplier-Specific & Non-Refundable Services
- Certain services carry their own cancellation, refund or amendment terms: airline tickets, visa fees, embassy, consulate and visa-centre charges, travel insurance, rail tickets and passes, cruise and ferry bookings, event, concert, sports and attraction tickets, special-event bookings, non-refundable hotel rates, supplier deposits and any service identified as non-refundable.
- Where supplier-specific conditions were communicated in the quotation, invoice, voucher, booking confirmation or service conditions before payment, those conditions apply to that service.
- Blockchain network fees paid when you sent your payment are not part of the package amount and are not refundable.
No-Show, Unused & Partially Used Services
- No refund or Travel Credit is ordinarily provided for: no-shows, cancellation after travel has commenced, voluntarily unused services, partly completed holidays, missed hotel nights, missed transfers, missed activities or sightseeing, missed trains or other transport, traveller delays, failure to report at the required time, services missed because of documentation issues, or services missed for reasons attributable to the traveller.
- If a supplier voluntarily approves a refund in an exceptional case, Atravelx passes on the recoverable amount in USDC under the applicable supplier and booking conditions.
Booking Acceptance
- By confirming a booking and making payment, you accept the cancellation, refund, date-change, bundled-package and Travel Credit conditions in this policy.
- Conditions stated in writing for an individual booking (quotation, invoice, voucher or booking confirmation) supplement this policy. Where a supplier's terms are stricter and were disclosed before payment, they apply to that service.
- A booking is governed by the version of this policy shown on the package page on the booking date, unless a later version is more favourable to you or Atravelx agrees otherwise in writing.
- For events beyond Atravelx's reasonable control (severe weather, natural disasters, epidemics, war, civil unrest, strikes, government restrictions, border or airport closures, supplier insolvency and similar), refunds, credits, postponements or alternatives depend on the affected supplier's policy and the amounts recoverable. Atravelx helps coordinate with the suppliers.
- Nothing in this policy restricts any statutory right available to a consumer under applicable law.
Frequently asked questions
What is included in this Germany Austria Switzerland package?
Can this Germany Austria Switzerland itinerary be customised?
Is airfare included in the Germany Austria Switzerland package price?
No. This is a land package. International and domestic flights are quoted separately so you can use your own airline, your miles or a cheaper routing if you have one. The figure on this page covers the seven nights with breakfast, Mt Pilatus, the Salzburg Card, the Munich Residenz, every rail ticket on the itinerary including the reserved railjet seats, the city tourist tax and GST - everything from arriving at Munich Airport to leaving from Zurich. You want a flight into Munich and out of Zurich, which is usually cheaper than a return to one city and always faster than backtracking.
What is the best time to book this Germany Austria Switzerland tour package?
Does Atravelq help with visa guidance for Germany Austria Switzerland?
Is eight days enough for three countries?
It is, because of how the route is built, and it would not be if it were built the usual way. Munich, Salzburg and Lucerne sit nearly in a line, so nothing doubles back. There are only two moves in the whole trip and both are trains you sit on rather than drives you endure. Zurich then comes free on the last day because a Swiss ticket lets you break the journey. What you are not getting is Berlin, Vienna or Italy - those need the fourteen-day coach tour. What you are getting is three countries properly rather than six superficially.
Why is there no coach, and does that make it harder?
Every leg here is a scheduled train with a pre-issued ticket, and the two long ones have reserved seats. That is easier than a coach, not harder - European stations are signposted in English, the platforms are level, and you are never waiting for forty other people. It is also why the pace works: you decide when to go up Pilatus based on the forecast, not the schedule. The only thing a coach tour gives you that this does not is a guide talking on the bus, and a city card plus a good hotel location replaces that at a fraction of the cost.
How long is the Salzburg to Switzerland train, really?
About five hours to Zurich and another fifty minutes to Lucerne, so six hours door to door. We have put it on Day 5 and left that evening clear on purpose. It is also the best window of the trip - the Tirol valleys after Innsbruck, the climb to the 1884 Arlberg Tunnel which is the highest point on the line, then the Walensee on the Swiss side with cliffs straight out of the water. People who expected to endure it tend to list it as a highlight afterwards. Only two direct trains a day run the whole way, so your departure time comes from the timetable and is named in your quotation.
Why doesn't this package include a Swiss Travel Pass?
Because we priced it and it loses money here. A pass or a Half Fare Card earns its keep when you have many Swiss days and several expensive mountain tickets. This itinerary has three Swiss days and one ticketed mountain, so the card's own cost is more than the half it would save, and a pass costs several times that. You travel on point-to-point tickets instead, all pre-issued, and the difference stays in your price rather than in our margin. If you extend the Swiss leg or add a second summit, ask us to re-run it - the answer flips with the itinerary.
What happens if Pilatus is covered in clouds?
You go up and see cloud, and no lift operator in Switzerland refunds that. We would rather tell you now than at the quay. What we do build in is flexibility: Day 6 and Day 7 in Lucerne swap freely, so if the forecast is clearly better on the second day we move the mountain to it. Go up early either way - Pilatus makes its own cloud by mid-afternoon more often than not. There is only one summit day in this itinerary, which keeps the price where it is but does mean this one is weather-dependent.
Can we add Neuschwanstein Castle?
Yes, as an add-on, with a third night in Munich attached. It is a long day trip from Munich - train, then a bus, then a walk or shuttle up to the castle - and squeezing it into the existing two nights would cost you the Munich day entirely. Castle tickets are timed and genuinely sell out weeks ahead in summer, so you have to decide at booking rather than on the trip. Tell us at enquiry, and we quote the extra night and the tickets together as one revised total.
Is vegetarian or Indian food available on this route?
Yes in all three cities, with Munich the easiest. Munich has a long-established Indian restaurant scene and plenty of vegetarian options beyond it; Lucerne has Indian restaurants near the station and the old town; Salzburg is the smallest and has fewer, though its old town has several. Breakfast at all three hotels will always have bread, cheese, eggs, fruit and cereal. If you are strictly Jain or need no onion and garlic, tell us at enquiry so we can note the hotels and send you a shortlist rather than leaving you to find out on Day 4.
How much walking is there, and will it suit our parents?
This trip combines city walking with seated travel between cities, which is a good mix for older travellers. The hardest days are Munich on Day 2 and Salzburg on Day 4, both around five to seven kilometres of flat city walking spread across the day with plenty of places to sit. The fortress funicular and the Pilatus cogwheel do the climbing for you. The Musegg Wall towers on Day 7 have steep wooden stairs and are entirely optional. Nothing on this itinerary requires a hike. Tell us at enquiry if anyone has mobility limits and we will adjust the Salzburg day and add transfers where they help.
What should we pack?
Layers, and one warm jacket even in summer - Pilatus at 2,128m is often fifteen degrees colder than Lucerne. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else on this trip. A light waterproof, because all three countries get sudden showers. One travel adapter works across all three: Germany, Austria and Switzerland all use round two-pin plugs, though Swiss sockets are a slightly different shape, and a cheap universal adapter saves trouble. Pack light enough to carry your own bag up station stairs - there are two train moves, and not every platform has a lift.
What is the best time of year for this trip?
Late May to June and September to early October. Those windows give you good weather in all three countries at once, which is the real constraint on a multi-country trip, plus the Pilatus cogwheel running and hotel rates below the summer peak. July and August have the longest days and the most reliable mountain weather but the highest rates everywhere on this route, and Munich and Salzburg are both at their busiest. Winter is the cheapest by a clear margin, but the days are short, the Lucerne wall towers are shut and the Alpnachstad cogwheel does not run, so the Pilatus day reverses.
Which currency should we carry?
Both. Germany and Austria use the euro, and Switzerland uses the Swiss franc, and they are not interchangeable - Swiss shops will usually take euros, but at a rate that costs you, and German and Austrian shops will not take francs at all. Cards work everywhere on this route including on trains and at mountain stations, so the simplest approach is a card for most things plus a small amount of each currency in cash. Change money before you leave India rather than at airport counters, and avoid changing euros into francs in Switzerland.
Are the hotels confirmed?
No - the properties shown are examples of the 3-star category and the central areas we book in, not a held booking. Your actual hotel is named in your quotation before you pay anything. Three dates matter here: Oktoberfest and the big Munich trade fairs, when Munich rates can double; the Salzburg Festival in late July and August, when that city is scarce and dear; and July and August in Lucerne, which sells out earliest of the three. If the property we want is unavailable, we move you to a similar-tier alternative in the same area and tell you before you pay, not after.
How is this different from your other Europe packages?
This is the only one that covers three countries, and the only one built around a scenic rail leg between two of them rather than around a single country's mountains. Our Paris and Switzerland package is a two-country trip for couples with a city at one end. Our Switzerland-only packages give you far more Swiss mountain time - several summits rather than one - and suit you better if the Alps are the whole point. This one is for a first Europe trip where you want range: a Bavarian city, an Austrian fortress town and the Swiss Alps, each with a real base rather than a photo stop. If you are choosing between them, the question is whether you want one country in depth or three countries properly.
