Tour Overview

Sleep in a Grindelwald luxury suite with the Eiger filling the window, ride Europe's highest railway to three thousand four hundred and fifty-four metres the next morning, then transfer to Zermatt where the Matterhorn appears at the end of every car-free street.

A 5-night Switzerland mountain tour package from India built around the two summit railways people actually come for - the Jungfrau Railway to 3,454m and the Gornergrat Bahn to 3,089 m, facing the Matterhorn - with three nights in Interlaken and two in Zermatt. Zurich, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and Geneva are built into the travelling days. May to October gives the clearest summit mornings; both railways run in winter too, and winter tickets are cheaper. From ₹1,54,999 per person, two adults in a double room - land package, international flights excluded. Tell us your dates, and we will build the quote around them.

Itinerary — day by day

InterlakenZermattDeparture

DAY 01

Land in Zurich, half a day there, then Interlaken

Bags in a locker - Lindenhof - Interlaken by evening
INTERLAKEN
Limmat veiw from roof
ARRIVAL
The rail station sits directly under Zurich Airport arrivals. Ten minutes to the main station, bags into a locker - one ticket carries you through to Interlaken with this stop built into it.
EVENING
Check in for three nights. The Hohematte park in the middle of Interlaken gives you the Jungfrau framed between two hotels, which is the view you will recognise from every brochure.
LATE MORNING
Lindenhof, the flat terrace above the old town, then the Niederdorf lanes down to the Limmat. Free, and it is the whole of Zurich's old quarter in about two hours.
AFTERNOON
Bags collected, then about two hours to Interlaken along Lake Thun. Sit on the right after Spiez - the lake is on that side and so is the first proper view of the Bernese Alps.
Hotels

Central Interlaken, 3-Star

3 nights - Breakfast - Walking distance from Interlaken Ost

  • Stay Three nights in a central 3-star double room with a double bed and breakfast, priced per person, two adults to the room.
  • Position Close to Interlaken Ost, which is where the Jungfrau trains and the Lauterbrunnen trains both leave from. The Jungfraujoch day starts early, so this matters more here than anywhere else on the trip.
  • Meals here Breakfast all three mornings. No dinner is included on any night of this package, in either town.
  • Note Shown as an example of the category and area we book in. Your confirmed property is named in your quotation.
Transfers

Zurich Airport to Interlaken, with Zurich in between

One ticket - Zurich stop built in - About 2 hrs 10 min of rail

  • At the airport The station is directly under arrivals, with lifts down to the platform for luggage trolleys.
  • Route Ten minutes to Zurich main station, then about two hours to Interlaken Ost. One ticket covers both legs and the stop in between, so your half-day in Zurich costs nothing extra.
  • Lockers Zurich main station has left luggage, so you walk the old town without your cases and collect them on the way to the Interlaken train.
  • Private car option Available as an add-on if you would rather not board a train off a long flight. Quoted separately.
Activities

Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe (Included)

3,454m - Highest railway station in Europe - Full climb included

  • Included Included: The full return climb from Interlaken Ost - Grindelwald, Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfrau Railway to the top. It is the single most expensive ticket on this trip at full fare, and your Half Fare Card halves it. Both the ticket and the card are inside the package.
  • What is up there What is up there: The Sphinx observation terrace at 3,571m, the Ice Palace cut into the glacier, the Alpine Sensation walkway, and the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps, running twenty-three kilometres below.
  • Allow Two hours each way and two to three hours at the top. It is a full day and nothing else is planned around it.
  • Season and weather Runs all year. Winter fares are lower than summer and we pass that saving on when your dates fall between November and April. A clouded-in summit is not refundable by the railway, which is why we build in a spare day to swap to.

DAY 02

Jungfraujoch - the Top of Europe

3,454m - Through Grindelwald - Tunnel inside the Eiger
INTERLAKEN
Sphinx observation terrace at Jungfraujoch
EARLY MORNING
Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald, then up to Kleine Scheidegg and on to the Jungfraujoch. About two hours each way, and the whole climb is included.
THE TUNNEL
The last stretch runs inside the Eiger itself, cut between 1896 and 1912 by men working with hand drills and dynamite. It still ends at the highest railway station in Europe.
AT THE TOP
The Sphinx terrace at 3,571m, the Ice Palace carved into the glacier, and the Aletsch - the longest glacier in the Alps - running away below you for twenty-three kilometres.
ON THE WAY DOWN
Break at Grindelwald. The village sits under the Eiger north face and is worth an hour on foot before the last leg back to Interlaken.
Hotels

Zermatt, 3-Star

2 nights - Breakfast - The most expensive beds in Switzerland

  • Stay Two nights in a central 3-star double room with a double bed and breakfast.
  • Position Within walking distance of the station, which is where the Gornergrat cogwheel leaves from - the two platforms face each other. Zermatt is car-free, so everything is on foot or on an electric buggy anyway.
  • Being straight with you Zermatt has the dearest hotel rates in Switzerland, well above Interlaken for the same category. Two nights here account for a large share of what this trip costs to put together. We hold it to two nights for exactly that reason, and we would rather tell you than pad the itinerary.
  • Meals here Breakfast both mornings. No dinner on either night. Zermatt restaurants are expensive; a street back from the main road is noticeably cheaper.
Transfers

The Interlaken Day Trips

Jungfraujoch and Lauterbrunnen - Both from the same station

  • Day 2, Jungfraujoch Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald, up to Kleine Scheidegg, then the Jungfrau Railway to the top. About two hours each way, three changes, all of it pre-issued.
  • Day 3, Lauterbrunnen Twenty minutes each way from the same station. The shortest excursion of the trip and the only one that costs nothing beyond the rail.
  • No fixed departures Neither is a booked group departure. You choose your trains; only the weather and the first-train advice set the clock.
  • Swapping them If Day 2 looks closed in and Day 3 looks clear, we swap. The Jungfrau ticket is for a date and can usually be moved a day with notice.
Activities

Gornergrat Bahn (Included)

3,089m - 1898 cogwheel - 29 peaks over 4,000m

  • Included The return ticket from Zermatt. Winter fares are lower than summer, and your Half Fare Card halves either one. Included on any date you travel.
  • What you get An open ridge at 3,089m with the Matterhorn directly opposite, the Gorner Glacier below, and twenty-nine peaks above 4,000 metres in view, Monte Rosa among them. No tunnels, no building - just the ridge.
  • The Riffelsee Get off at Rotenboden on the way down and walk ten minutes. On a windless morning the Matterhorn reflects whole in the lake. It costs nothing and it is the photograph people actually want.
  • Season Runs all year except a maintenance break from 2 to 14 November 2026. We do not book this day inside that window.

The air at 3,454m has about a third less oxygen, so walk slowly up there for the first ten minutes and drink more water than you think you need. It is cold on top in every month of the year; carry a jacket even in July.
DAY 03

Lauterbrunnen - the valley of seventy-two waterfalls

20 min out - Staubbach Falls - Free all day
INTERLAKEN
Staubbach Falls
MORNING
Twenty minutes from Interlaken Ost into the Lauterbrunnen valley, a trench with vertical rock walls on both sides and seventy-two waterfalls coming off them.
STAUBBACH FALLS
Just under 300 metres in a single drop, straight behind the village. A footpath takes you into the rock behind the water, and none of it costs anything.
AFTERNOON
The valley floor walk towards Trummelbach, flat the whole way with the Jungfrau closing the end of the valley. Then back to Interlaken whenever you like.
IF YOU WANT MORE
Harder Kulm's funicular, the Trummelbach glacier falls inside the mountain, and a Lake Brienz cruise are all on the add-on list with their prices. This day is deliberately left free and cheap, because the two summit days either side of it are not.
Hotels

4-Star, and the Alternatives

Both towns, all five nights - Quoted before you pay

  • 4-star, all five nights Both towns moved up a category. You can also upgrade Zermatt alone and leave Interlaken at 3-star, which costs roughly half as much. Both figures are in your quotation.
  • Matterhorn-view room in Zermatt Quoted on request rather than listed, because it depends entirely on the property and the month. This is the one room upgrade on the trip that genuinely changes the stay.
  • If the 3-star we want is full We move you to a similar-tier property in the same area rather than a cheaper one further out, and we tell you before you pay, not after.
  • Single travellers A single occupancy supplement applies and is quoted separately. The headline price on this page is per person, two adults in a double room.
Transfers

Interlaken to Zermatt

About 2 hrs 10 min - One change at Visp - The only hotel move

  • Route Interlaken to Spiez and Visp, then the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn up the valley to Zermatt. About two hours and ten minutes, one change.
  • Luggage With you, and this is the only time you move it. Zermatt is car-free, so an electric taxi or a hotel buggy covers the last few hundred metres if your room is not beside the station.
  • The last hour The valley narrows from Visp onwards and the train climbs steadily. The Matterhorn does not appear until Zermatt itself, which is deliberate on the railway's part and still works.
  • Timing A mid-morning departure gets you in for lunch and leaves the afternoon for the village and the Kirchbrucke view.
Activities

What You Walk To, for Nothing

Staubbach Falls - Grindelwald - Zurich old town - Geneva

  • Lauterbrunnen and Staubbach A valley with seventy-two waterfalls and a 300-metre single drop behind the village, with a path that goes into the rock behind the water. No ticket.
  • Grindelwald Built into the Day 2 descent, under the Eiger north face. An hour on foot there costs nothing and it is the only way this package covers Grindelwald without paying for a village hotel.
  • Zurich and Geneva Lindenhof and the Niederdorf lanes on the way in; the Jet d'Eau, the old town and St Pierre Cathedral on the way out. Both are station-locker half-days, both free.
  • Zermatt itself The Kirchbrucke view, the Bahnhofstrasse, and the old Hinterdorf quarter with its 16th-century timber granaries on stone discs. All free to walk.

If Day 2 was clouded out, this is the day we swap - your Jungfrau ticket is for a date, not a time, and we can usually move it. Tell the hotel the night before rather than the morning of.
DAY 04

Over to Zermatt, and the first sight of it

About 2 hrs 10 min - Car-free village - Two nights
ZERMATT
EVENING
Yours. Zermatt is expensive to eat in; the places a street back from the Bahnhofstrasse charge noticeably less than the ones on it.
MORNING
Interlaken to Zermatt, about two hours and ten minutes with a change at Visp. The only hotel move of the trip, and the valley narrows the whole way in.
ZERMATT
No petrol cars are allowed in the village, so it runs on electric buggies and feet. Check in, then walk up the Bahnhofstrasse to where the street ends and the Matterhorn starts.
AFTERNOON
The Kirchbrucke, the small bridge over the Matter Vispa, is where the standard photograph of the mountain is taken from. Two minutes from the main street and free.
Transfers

Zermatt to Geneva Airport, via Geneva

About 3 hrs 50 min - Geneva stop built into the ticket

  • Route Zermatt to Visp, then west along the Rhone valley and the north shore of Lake Geneva to Geneva, and six minutes more to the airport. About three hours fifty in total.
  • The Geneva stop One ticket, valid all day, break of journey allowed. With an evening flight that buys you two or three hours in the city with your bags in a station locker.
  • Buffer Allow five hours from Zermatt without the Geneva stop, eight with it. This is the longest day of the trip and we plan it around your actual flight time.
  • Morning flight Then this does not work. We move the last night to Geneva or Montreux instead, which adds a transfer and changes the price. Tell us the flight at enquiry, not after booking.
Activities

Upgrades and What Each One Costs

Half price with your card - each one priced in your quotation

  • Matterhorn Glacier Paradise Europe's highest cable car station at 3,883m, from Zermatt, with a glacier palace at the top. Half price on your card. The obvious second Zermatt summit if you want one.
  • Harder Kulm The funicular above Interlaken to a platform over the two lakes. Twenty minutes up, best an hour before sunset. Runs 3 April to 29 November.
  • Trummelbach Falls Ten glacier waterfalls inside the mountain, reached by a lift cut into the rock. Fits the Lauterbrunnen day. No pass discount exists on this one.
  • Glacier Express seat, Zermatt onwards, quoted on request If you would rather leave Zermatt eastward on the panoramic train than west to Geneva. It changes the whole shape of the trip, so we quote it as a different itinerary rather than an add-on price.
  • Extra night in Interlaken or Zermatt Interlaken is the cheaper night by a wide margin, which is worth knowing before you choose.
  • 4-star upgrade, whole package All five nights moved up a category in both towns.

DAY 05

Gornergrat - the Matterhorn straight ahead

3,089m - 30 min by cogwheel - Return ticket included
ZERMATT
MORNING
Thirty minutes up by cogwheel from the station opposite your arrival platform. It opened in 1898 as the first electric cogwheel railway in Switzerland and still climbs 1,500 metres in half an hour.
AT 3,089M
An open ridge rather than a building - the Matterhorn directly opposite, the Gorner Glacier below, and twenty-nine peaks over 4,000 metres around the circle, including Monte Rosa, the highest in Switzerland.
COMING DOWN
Get off at Rotenboden and walk ten minutes to the Riffelsee. On a still morning the Matterhorn reflects in it completely, and that photograph is the reason most people come up here.
AFTERNOON
Back in Zermatt by early afternoon with the rest of the day free. Your ticket covers the whole day, so you can go back up if the cloud clears late.
STAY · ZermattMEALS · BreakfastSUMMIT · 3,089mRETURN · IncludedWORTH KNOWING · Sit on the right going up - that is the Matterhorn side, and the left only gets it on the way down. The Riffelsee reflection needs a windless morning, so the first trains are worth the early start. The railway closes for maintenance from 2 to 14 November 2026, which is the one window we cannot book this day in.
DAY 06

Zermatt to Geneva, and home

Along Lake Geneva - Geneva stop if your flight allows
DEPARTURE
Geneva and the lake
MORNING
Zermatt down the valley to Visp, then west along the Rhone and the full length of Lake Geneva. About three hours and fifty minutes in total, and the last hour is lake on one side and vineyards on the other.
GENEVA, IF YOU HAVE TIME
One ticket covers the whole run and allows a stop, so with an evening flight you get two or three hours - the Jet d'Eau throwing 140 metres of water out of the lake, the old town, and St Pierre Cathedral. Bags go in a station locker.
TO THE AIRPORT
Six minutes from Geneva main station, arriving directly under the terminal.
TIMING
Allow five hours from Zermatt if you skip Geneva, eight if you take the stop. We build this day around the flight time you give us.
STAY · -MEALS · BreakfastRAIL · About 3 hrs 50 minBUFFER · 5 hrs minimumWORTH KNOWING · This is the longest travel day of the trip and it is the reason the package ends in Geneva rather than going back to Zurich - the return would be the same four hours with nothing new out of the window. If your flight home is a morning one, tell us and we will move the last night to Geneva or Montreux instead, which changes the price.

Important Information

Your trip is planned based on current availability and supplier schedules. We will confirm final arrangements in your booking confirmation.

Visual journey

Why this route works

The Half Fare Card is what makes this price possible
Jungfraujoch at full fare is CHF 261.20 and Gornergrat is CHF 132 - the two most expensive tickets most visitors ever buy in Switzerland. A Swiss Travel Pass only takes 25 per cent off the top section of the Jungfrau climb. The Half Fare Card takes 50 per cent off both, and off every train in between. It costs CHF 150 and saves about CHF 200 on this route, which is why it is inside the package rather than something you find out about later.
Two summits, two completely different mountains
Jungfraujoch puts you inside the Alps - a tunnel through the Eiger, a glacier plateau, ice caves, and the longest glacier in the Alps below the terrace. Gornergrat puts you opposite them - an open ridge with the Matterhorn straight ahead and twenty-nine four-thousanders around it. One is about being in the mountains, the other about looking at them. Packages that do only one of them are selling you half the country.
Two hotels, and the other cities come free
Zurich is a half-day on the arrival morning with your bags in a station locker. Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are short runs from the Interlaken base. Geneva is a stop on the way to your flight home. None of them needs a hotel night, because a Swiss ticket is valid all day and lets you break the journey - so you unpack twice in six days and still see six places.

Full policy details

Cancellation Policy
  • 10 or more calendar days before departure: a 30% cancellation charge applies to the eligible package amount. Choose a 70% refund in USDC or 100% of the eligible amount as Atravelx Travel Credit.
  • Less than 10 calendar days before departure: 100% non-refundable. No refund or Travel Credit is ordinarily issued.
  • After travel commences, or no-show: non-refundable. No refund or Travel Credit is ordinarily available.
  • Days are counted as calendar days to the scheduled departure date, in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). The timestamp on your written request fixes when Atravelx received it.
  • Cancellation requests must be made in writing through an authorised Atravelx channel: your concierge, info@atravelx.com or WhatsApp +91 92500 00511. A phone call alone does not cancel a booking until it is confirmed in writing.
  • Quote the booking reference, the lead traveller's name and the services affected. Atravelx may ask for identity or payment verification before acting on a request.
  • A reason is not needed to qualify under the 10-day window.
  • Cancelling some travellers, rooms, nights or services is a package amendment, not a cancellation. It does not qualify for the 10-day refund or credit on its own, and it can change the per-person price for the remaining travellers.
Atravelx Travel Credit
  • Travel Credit is issued as an Atravelx Credit Note for 100% of the eligible amount actually paid, denominated in USDC.
  • The 30% cancellation charge is waived when you choose Travel Credit instead of a refund.
  • Credit can be used towards any eligible service booked through Atravelx: holiday packages, stays, flights, transfers, sightseeing, car rental, visa assistance and other eligible services.
  • Travel Credit is non-cash. It cannot be withdrawn, exchanged for cryptocurrency or fiat currency, or transferred to another person, unless Atravelx agrees in writing.
  • The validity period and expiry date are stated on the Credit Note.
  • Prices at the time of the new booking apply. Travel Credit does not hold the same hotel, room, destination, dates, itinerary, supplier, activity, package or price.
  • If the new booking costs more, you pay the difference in USDC. If it costs less, the balance stays on the Credit Note under its terms.
  • Once you choose Travel Credit, the choice is final. It is not later converted into a refund.
Date Change Policy
  • Request date changes 10 or more calendar days before the scheduled departure date.
  • A date change is not guaranteed. It depends on hotel, transfer and activity availability, supplier approval, revised room rates, seasonal pricing, blackout dates, peak-season supplements, transport costs, fare differences, supplier amendment charges and revised itinerary costs.
  • If the revised package costs more, you pay the difference in USDC. Supplier amendment or date-change charges may also apply.
  • A date change is confirmed only when Atravelx confirms the revised arrangements in writing.
  • Requests made less than 10 calendar days before departure depend on supplier approval and cannot be guaranteed.
  • A postponement or date change is not a cancellation. It does not by itself create a refund or Travel Credit entitlement.
Bundled Holiday Packages
  • Atravelx holiday packages are booked and priced as bundled travel arrangements made up of several interconnected services.
  • Individual components of a confirmed package cannot ordinarily be cancelled separately.
  • Removing a service does not automatically entitle you to a proportionate refund or Travel Credit.
  • Any request to remove, replace or modify a component is treated as a package amendment, subject to supplier approval, availability, revised pricing, amounts recoverable and applicable charges.
  • A value shown against an individual service does not mean it was separately contracted or can be independently cancelled.
Visa & Travel Documentation
  • Travellers are responsible for a valid passport, the right visa, transit visas, entry permits, immigration documents, health documentation and any other paperwork required by the destination or a transit country.
  • Visa decisions are made solely by the relevant government, embassy, consulate or immigration authority. Atravelx does not guarantee approval, processing time or appointment availability.
  • A visa refusal, delay or failure to obtain a visa does not override the cancellation conditions unless Atravelx confirms otherwise in writing.
  • Government, embassy, visa application centre, biometric, courier and processing fees may be non-refundable once paid or submitted.
Refund Processing & Timeline
  • Atravelx acknowledges a cancellation request within 2 working days. Acknowledgement confirms receipt, not eligibility or amount. After reviewing the booking, Atravelx confirms in writing which services are cancelled, the refundable and non-refundable components, the deductions and the refund amount.
  • Approved refunds are processed within 45 working days from the date Atravelx confirms in writing that the refund is approved.
  • The 45 days do not run from the booking date, the date you first asked to cancel, or the departure date.
  • Working days exclude Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in the United States and India.
  • Refunds are calculated and paid in USDC. The refund is the eligible package amount in USDC as shown on your invoice, less the cancellation charge and any supplier deductions.
  • If you paid in another cryptocurrency, the refund is still the USDC value of the eligible amount at the time of payment, not the number of coins you sent. Atravelx is not liable for changes in the market value of any coin between payment and refund.
  • Refunds are sent to the wallet address the payment came from, on the same network. If that is not possible, you may nominate another wallet, which Atravelx verifies in writing before sending. Atravelx is not responsible for funds sent to a wallet address you supplied incorrectly.
  • If you paid by card or bank transfer through an Atravelx payment partner, the refund goes back to that payment method where the partner supports it. Otherwise another method is agreed in writing.
  • Blockchain confirmations, payment partners, card issuers and banks may add time before the funds show in your wallet or account.
  • Where Atravelx cancels a confirmed booking for reasons within its reasonable control, all amounts received for the cancelled services are refunded in full, initiated within 7 working days. An alternative itinerary or Travel Credit may be offered, but you are not required to accept it instead of the refund.
  • An approved refund is not replaced with Travel Credit unless you expressly agree, or the supplier itself provides only a credit or voucher under conditions disclosed before booking.
Supplier-Specific & Non-Refundable Services
  • Certain services carry their own cancellation, refund or amendment terms: airline tickets, visa fees, embassy, consulate and visa-centre charges, travel insurance, rail tickets and passes, cruise and ferry bookings, event, concert, sports and attraction tickets, special-event bookings, non-refundable hotel rates, supplier deposits and any service identified as non-refundable.
  • Where supplier-specific conditions were communicated in the quotation, invoice, voucher, booking confirmation or service conditions before payment, those conditions apply to that service.
  • Blockchain network fees paid when you sent your payment are not part of the package amount and are not refundable.
No-Show, Unused & Partially Used Services
  • No refund or Travel Credit is ordinarily provided for: no-shows, cancellation after travel has commenced, voluntarily unused services, partly completed holidays, missed hotel nights, missed transfers, missed activities or sightseeing, missed trains or other transport, traveller delays, failure to report at the required time, services missed because of documentation issues, or services missed for reasons attributable to the traveller.
  • If a supplier voluntarily approves a refund in an exceptional case, Atravelx passes on the recoverable amount in USDC under the applicable supplier and booking conditions.
Booking Acceptance
  • By confirming a booking and making payment, you accept the cancellation, refund, date-change, bundled-package and Travel Credit conditions in this policy.
  • Conditions stated in writing for an individual booking (quotation, invoice, voucher or booking confirmation) supplement this policy. Where a supplier's terms are stricter and were disclosed before payment, they apply to that service.
  • A booking is governed by the version of this policy shown on the package page on the booking date, unless a later version is more favourable to you or Atravelx agrees otherwise in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this so much cheaper than other Jungfraujoch and Zermatt packages?

Three reasons, and none of them is a cut corner. First, the rail product: a Half Fare Card at CHF 150 halves both summit tickets, whereas a Swiss Travel Pass only takes 25 per cent off the top of the Jungfrau climb - that difference alone is about CHF 135 per person. Second, we do not pay for hotel nights in Zurich, Grindelwald or Geneva; you see all three on days you are travelling anyway, with your bags in a station locker. Third, only two nights in Zermatt, which has the dearest beds in Switzerland. What you are not getting is a tour manager, a coach, or five-star rooms.

Is two nights enough in Zermatt?

For Gornergrat and the village, yes - and there is a reason it is two. Zermatt 3-star rooms run CHF 160 to 330 a night, the highest in the country, and a third night there costs about seventeen thousand rupees against twelve in Interlaken. Two nights give you a full Gornergrat day plus two chances at a clear Matterhorn, which is what most people actually need. If you want Matterhorn Glacier Paradise as well, add a night, and we will quote it.

What happens if the summit is covered in cloud?

Being straight with you: neither railway refunds a clouded-in summit, and no tour operator can change that. What we do instead is build the trip so you have options. The Lauterbrunnen day sits between the two summit days and can be swapped with either, and the Jungfrau ticket is issued for a date rather than a time, so you can usually move it a day with notice. In Zermatt, your Gornergrat ticket is valid the whole day, so a grey morning can become a clear afternoon. Take the first train up on both summit days - mornings clear far more often than afternoons.

Why is there no hotel night in Grindelwald?

Because you pass through it anyway and the night would cost you for nothing. The Jungfrau Railway runs Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch, so Grindelwald is on your route both ways on Day 2 and we build in an hour there on the descent, under the Eiger north face. Village rooms in Grindelwald price well above Interlaken for the same category, and from Interlaken you also reach Lauterbrunnen in twenty minutes, which you cannot do as easily from Grindelwald. If you specifically want to sleep under the Eiger, say so and we will quote it.

Should we travel in summer or winter?

Both work, but the price isn't the same. Winter is cheaper on the two things that matter most here - Jungfraujoch drops from CHF 261.20 to CHF 224.40 and Gornergrat from CHF 132 to CHF 96 - and hotel rates in Interlaken fall too. You lose daylight, the Lauterbrunnen waterfalls at full flow, and the open walking paths. Summer buys long days and green valleys at the highest prices of the year. May, June, September and early October sit between the two and are what we recommend most often. The one date we avoid is 2 to 14 November, when the Gornergrat Bahn closes for maintenance.

Is the altitude a problem at 3,454m?

For most people it is a mild headache at worst. The air at Jungfraujoch has around a third less oxygen than at sea level, and you go from 568 metres at Interlaken to 3,454 in about two hours, which is fast. Walk slowly for the first ten minutes at the top, drink more water than feels necessary, and do not run for the Sphinx lift. If anyone travelling has a heart or lung condition, or is pregnant, tell us at enquiry and talk to your doctor - we would rather plan around it than have you find out up there.

Are the hotels confirmed?

No - the properties shown are examples of the 3-star category and the central areas we book in, not a held booking. Your actual hotel is named in your quotation before you pay anything. Zermatt is the tighter of the two: July, August and the ski months sell out well in advance, so early dates genuinely help there. If the property we want is unavailable we move you to a similar-tier alternative in the same area and tell you ahead of time rather than on arrival.

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Switzerland?

Yes. Switzerland is in the Schengen area, so Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa before travelling. We help with the documentation, hotel confirmations, itinerary letter, and appointment, but the visa fee and VFS Global service charges are not included in the package price, and the consulate makes the final decision. Appointment waiting times vary throughout the year, so apply early and reconfirm the current requirements for your travel dates rather than relying on this page.

Are flights included?

No. This is a land package, quoted from Zurich Airport to Geneva Airport. International and domestic flights are quoted separately, so you can use your own airline, miles or a cheaper routing if you have one. Flying into Zurich and out of Geneva is a normal multi-city booking on this route and usually prices close to a return. The figure on this page covers the five nights with breakfast, both summit tickets, the Half Fare Card, every rail ticket on the itinerary, the tourist tax and GST.

Is vegetarian or Indian food available on this route?

Vegetarian, yes, everywhere - rösti, Alpine macaroni, soups, pasta and salads are standard on every menu, including the restaurants at both summits, and Swiss kitchens handle the word "vegetarian" without confusion. Indian food is a different question. Interlaken has a few Indian restaurants and they are used to Indian travellers; Zermatt has very little and Grindelwald none worth travelling for. If you want Indian food most evenings, say so at enquiry and we will tell you honestly which nights it will be possible. Jain requirements need advance notice rather than being arranged on the day. Carrying a few packets from home is something a lot of our travellers do on this route and we would not talk you out of it.

Can we extend the trip or add a third summit?

Both are easy, and both are quoted before you book. The usual additions are Matterhorn Glacier Paradise from Zermatt, which is higher than Gornergrat and a cable car rather than a train, and Harder Kulm above Interlaken for a sunset over the two lakes. Your Half Fare Card halves those too, since it is valid for a month. Extra nights are the other common one - Interlaken is the cheaper night by a wide margin, so if you want one more night anywhere, that is where it costs least. Some people also leave Zermatt eastward on the Glacier Express instead of west to Geneva; that changes the whole shape of the trip, so we quote it as a different itinerary rather than an add-on.

Do you need to book Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat tickets in advance?

We issue both before you travel, so there is nothing for you to book. What you should know is that the Jungfrau Railway runs on timed slots in the busy months and the early trains fill first - which matters, because the early train is also the one most likely to find a clear summit. Tell us your dates early and we take the first slot we can. Gornergrat is not slot-based; your return ticket is valid the whole day and you ride up whenever you like. Neither ticket can be refunded for weather, which is the reason the spare day sits between them.

What should we pack for the two summit days?

A proper jacket, in every month of the year. Jungfraujoch sits in permanent snow and ice and is below freezing even in July; Gornergrat is an open ridge with wind. The mistake Indian travellers make most often is treating a June trip as a summer trip - it is summer in the valley and winter at the top, and you go between the two in two hours. Take gloves, a cap, closed shoes with grip, sunglasses and sunscreen, because the glare off snow at that height is strong. Everything else is ordinary city clothing. You do not need boots or technical gear for anything in this package.
