Tour Overview

Stand on Europe's highest cable car station at three thousand eight hundred and eighty-three metres at Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, then board the Glacier Express at Zermatt the next morning and spend eight hours crossing two hundred and ninety-one tunnels through the heart of the Swiss Alps.

Switzerland Glacier Express Adventure Tour Package — Tour Overview

A 7-day Swiss rail adventure from India, running west across the country — two nights in Chur, one in St. Moritz and three in Zermatt, with the Glacier Express doing the long middle leg. Best from June to early October, when the rafting season is open, every summit lift runs its full schedule, and the Glacier Express is on its summer timetable.

This is the scenic-train route for people who do not want to spend a week in a seat. The Glacier Express is still the centrepiece — the full eight-hour run, 291 bridges, 91 tunnels — but it sits between a raft trip through the Rhine Gorge and three nights in Zermatt with two mountain days. Three nights in one village at the end is deliberate: it is what stops a rail itinerary from becoming a series of hotel check-ins.

ChurSt. MoritzZermattDeparture

DAY 01

Arrive Zurich → Chur

Direct rail ~1 hr 20 min · Switzerland's oldest town
CHUR
Chur old city town
ARRIVAL
Land at Zurich Airport. The SBB station sits directly under arrivals — no shuttle, no transfer vehicle to find.
CHECK-IN
Two nights in Chur — settled for around 5,000 years, which makes it the oldest continuously inhabited town in Switzerland.
EVENING
The old town is small, walkable and almost entirely free — a good first evening when you have just got off a long flight.
RAIL
Direct train Zurich Airport → Chur, about an hour and twenty minutes along the Walensee. Ticket included at half fare.
Hotels

Central Chur Hotel

2 nights · Double bed · Breakfast · Walk to the old town

  • Base 1 Two nights in central Chur, walking distance from the station and the old town.
  • Why Chur It is the gateway to the Rhine Gorge and the start of the Albula line, and it costs meaningfully less than St. Moritz or Zermatt for the same standard of room.
  • Note The confirmed property is named in your quotation; a similar central Chur hotel is provided if unavailable.
Activities

Rhine Gorge Rafting (Included)

Guided · Wetsuit & helmet provided · Beginner friendly

  • Included A guided raft descent of the Vorderrhein through the Ruinaulta, with wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet and a qualified river guide in every boat.
  • What it's like Mostly grade II to III on the summer run — splashy rather than frightening, and standard operators take complete beginners.
  • Requirements You must be able to swim, and operators apply minimum age and weight limits. We confirm these against your group before booking.
  • Season Roughly May to September, water levels permitting. Outside it, a guided gorge walk replaces the raft trip at no extra cost.

DAY 02

Rafting the Rhine Gorge

Ruinaulta · Swiss Grand Canyon · Guided half day
CHUR
river Rafting
THE RUN
A guided raft trip down the Vorderrhein through the Ruinaulta — white limestone walls left by a prehistoric rockslide, which is why it is called the Swiss Grand Canyon.
DIFFICULTY
Mostly grade II to III on the standard summer run — bouncy, wet, and manageable for first-timers. Wetsuit, helmet and guide are all provided.
THE POINT
Most people see this gorge through a train window at speed. Very few see it from the water.
SEASON
Rafting runs roughly May to September depending on water levels. Outside that window a guided gorge hike replaces it.
Hotels

St. Moritz Hotel

1 night · Double bed · Breakfast · Engadin valley

  • Stay One night in St. Moritz, positioned for the Bernina line up to Diavolezza on arrival afternoon and the Glacier Express departure the next morning.
  • Early start The Glacier Express leaves in the morning. A hotel near the station is worth more here than a view.
  • Note Pontresina is offered as an alternative base on dates when St. Moritz is tight or priced unreasonably — same valley, same rail access.
Transfers

Zurich Airport → Chur

Direct - 1 hr 20 min

  • At the airport The SBB station is directly under arrivals. Escalator down, platform, done.
  • Route Direct trains Zurich Airport → Chur, roughly hourly, about an hour and twenty minutes along the Walensee.
  • Ticket Included at half fare against your card.
Activities

Diavolezza (Included)

2,980m · Piz Palü · Bernina glaciers

  • Included Return rail from St. Moritz up the Bernina line and the return cable car to the Diavolezza terrace at roughly 2,980m.
  • The view Directly across at Piz Palü and Piz Bernina with the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers between them — a full glacier panorama with no walking required.
  • Weather Cable car closures for wind are occasional. On a closed day the excursion moves to the Muottas Muragl funicular or another day of your stay.

Albula Line to St. Moritz

UNESCO railway · Landwasser Viaduct · Diavolezza cable car
ST. MORITZ
Diavolezza, Pontresina, Switzerland
CHECK-IN
Two nights in St. Moritz, in the Engadin valley at 1,822m.
THE LINE
Chur → St. Moritz on the Albula route, a UNESCO World Heritage railway that climbs through spiral tunnels stacked inside the mountain to gain height.
LANDWASSER VIADUCT
Six arches curving straight into a cliff face — the most photographed piece of railway in Switzerland, and you cross it rather than photograph it from below.
AFTERNOON
Rail up the Bernina line and the cable car to Diavolezza at roughly 2,980m — straight across at Piz Palü, Piz Bernina and the glaciers between them. Included.
Hotels

Zermatt Village Hotel

3 nights · Double bed · Breakfast · Car-free village

  • Stay Three nights in car-free Zermatt — the longest stay of the trip, and the one that makes both mountain days possible without rushing.
  • Matterhorn rooms Requested and priced as a supplement. Not every Zermatt room faces the mountain, whatever the listing photos suggest.
  • Arrival Petrol cars have not been allowed in the village since 1961. Your hotel's electric shuttle meets the train.
Transfers

Albula Line — Chur → St. Moritz

UNESCO railway · ~2 hrs · No reservation needed

  • Route The Rhaetian Railway's Albula line, UNESCO-listed, climbing through stacked spiral tunnels and across the Landwasser Viaduct.
  • Best seats Right side leaving Chur for the viaduct approach. The regional train runs the same track as the branded services and costs far less.
  • No reservation Not needed on the regional service, which is what your ticket covers.
Activities

Gornergrat, Five Lakes & Gorner Gorge (Included)

3,089m cog railway · Sunnegga–Blauherd · Marble gorge

  • Gornergrat Bahn Return trip on Europe's highest open-air cog railway to 3,089m, with the Gorner Glacier and Monte Rosa at the top. Included.
  • Five Lakes Walk Return Sunnegga funicular and Blauherd cable car, then a mostly downhill path past five lakes — Stellisee holds the Matterhorn reflection on a still morning. Included.
  • Gorner Gorge Wooden walkways through a narrow polished gorge a short walk from the village. Short, shaded and included.
  • Season The Five Lakes path and the gorge are snow-free-season only. Confirmed against your travel dates.

Visual journey

Why this route works

West, not east
Running St. Moritz to Zermatt puts the Matterhorn at the end of the journey instead of the start, and lands you in the village you most want three nights in rather than one.
You get into the gorge, not just past it
The Glacier Express crosses the Rhine Gorge on Day 5. On Day 2 you raft through the bottom of it. Same canyon, two completely different days.
Three nights in Zermatt
Car-free, and long enough for Gornergrat plus the Five Lakes Walk and the Gorner Gorge — the two mountain days that matter, without a wasted afternoon.

Full policy details

Cancellation Policy
  • 10 or more calendar days before departure: a 30% cancellation charge applies to the eligible package amount. Choose a 70% refund in USDC or 100% of the eligible amount as Atravelx Travel Credit.
  • Less than 10 calendar days before departure: 100% non-refundable. No refund or Travel Credit is ordinarily issued.
  • After travel commences, or no-show: non-refundable. No refund or Travel Credit is ordinarily available.
  • Days are counted as calendar days to the scheduled departure date, in UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). The timestamp on your written request fixes when Atravelx received it.
  • Cancellation requests must be made in writing through an authorised Atravelx channel: your concierge, info@atravelx.com or WhatsApp +91 92500 00511. A phone call alone does not cancel a booking until it is confirmed in writing.
  • Quote the booking reference, the lead traveller's name and the services affected. Atravelx may ask for identity or payment verification before acting on a request.
  • A reason is not needed to qualify under the 10-day window.
  • Cancelling some travellers, rooms, nights or services is a package amendment, not a cancellation. It does not qualify for the 10-day refund or credit on its own, and it can change the per-person price for the remaining travellers.
Atravelx Travel Credit
  • Travel Credit is issued as an Atravelx Credit Note for 100% of the eligible amount actually paid, denominated in USDC.
  • The 30% cancellation charge is waived when you choose Travel Credit instead of a refund.
  • Credit can be used towards any eligible service booked through Atravelx: holiday packages, stays, flights, transfers, sightseeing, car rental, visa assistance and other eligible services.
  • Travel Credit is non-cash. It cannot be withdrawn, exchanged for cryptocurrency or fiat currency, or transferred to another person, unless Atravelx agrees in writing.
  • The validity period and expiry date are stated on the Credit Note.
  • Prices at the time of the new booking apply. Travel Credit does not hold the same hotel, room, destination, dates, itinerary, supplier, activity, package or price.
  • If the new booking costs more, you pay the difference in USDC. If it costs less, the balance stays on the Credit Note under its terms.
  • Once you choose Travel Credit, the choice is final. It is not later converted into a refund.
Date Change Policy
  • Request date changes 10 or more calendar days before the scheduled departure date.
  • A date change is not guaranteed. It depends on hotel, transfer and activity availability, supplier approval, revised room rates, seasonal pricing, blackout dates, peak-season supplements, transport costs, fare differences, supplier amendment charges and revised itinerary costs.
  • If the revised package costs more, you pay the difference in USDC. Supplier amendment or date-change charges may also apply.
  • A date change is confirmed only when Atravelx confirms the revised arrangements in writing.
  • Requests made less than 10 calendar days before departure depend on supplier approval and cannot be guaranteed.
  • A postponement or date change is not a cancellation. It does not by itself create a refund or Travel Credit entitlement.
Bundled Holiday Packages
  • Atravelx holiday packages are booked and priced as bundled travel arrangements made up of several interconnected services.
  • Individual components of a confirmed package cannot ordinarily be cancelled separately.
  • Removing a service does not automatically entitle you to a proportionate refund or Travel Credit.
  • Any request to remove, replace or modify a component is treated as a package amendment, subject to supplier approval, availability, revised pricing, amounts recoverable and applicable charges.
  • A value shown against an individual service does not mean it was separately contracted or can be independently cancelled.
Visa & Travel Documentation
  • Travellers are responsible for a valid passport, the right visa, transit visas, entry permits, immigration documents, health documentation and any other paperwork required by the destination or a transit country.
  • Visa decisions are made solely by the relevant government, embassy, consulate or immigration authority. Atravelx does not guarantee approval, processing time or appointment availability.
  • A visa refusal, delay or failure to obtain a visa does not override the cancellation conditions unless Atravelx confirms otherwise in writing.
  • Government, embassy, visa application centre, biometric, courier and processing fees may be non-refundable once paid or submitted.
Refund Processing & Timeline
  • Atravelx acknowledges a cancellation request within 2 working days. Acknowledgement confirms receipt, not eligibility or amount. After reviewing the booking, Atravelx confirms in writing which services are cancelled, the refundable and non-refundable components, the deductions and the refund amount.
  • Approved refunds are processed within 45 working days from the date Atravelx confirms in writing that the refund is approved.
  • The 45 days do not run from the booking date, the date you first asked to cancel, or the departure date.
  • Working days exclude Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in the United States and India.
  • Refunds are calculated and paid in USDC. The refund is the eligible package amount in USDC as shown on your invoice, less the cancellation charge and any supplier deductions.
  • If you paid in another cryptocurrency, the refund is still the USDC value of the eligible amount at the time of payment, not the number of coins you sent. Atravelx is not liable for changes in the market value of any coin between payment and refund.
  • Refunds are sent to the wallet address the payment came from, on the same network. If that is not possible, you may nominate another wallet, which Atravelx verifies in writing before sending. Atravelx is not responsible for funds sent to a wallet address you supplied incorrectly.
  • If you paid by card or bank transfer through an Atravelx payment partner, the refund goes back to that payment method where the partner supports it. Otherwise another method is agreed in writing.
  • Blockchain confirmations, payment partners, card issuers and banks may add time before the funds show in your wallet or account.
  • Where Atravelx cancels a confirmed booking for reasons within its reasonable control, all amounts received for the cancelled services are refunded in full, initiated within 7 working days. An alternative itinerary or Travel Credit may be offered, but you are not required to accept it instead of the refund.
  • An approved refund is not replaced with Travel Credit unless you expressly agree, or the supplier itself provides only a credit or voucher under conditions disclosed before booking.
Supplier-Specific & Non-Refundable Services
  • Certain services carry their own cancellation, refund or amendment terms: airline tickets, visa fees, embassy, consulate and visa-centre charges, travel insurance, rail tickets and passes, cruise and ferry bookings, event, concert, sports and attraction tickets, special-event bookings, non-refundable hotel rates, supplier deposits and any service identified as non-refundable.
  • Where supplier-specific conditions were communicated in the quotation, invoice, voucher, booking confirmation or service conditions before payment, those conditions apply to that service.
  • Blockchain network fees paid when you sent your payment are not part of the package amount and are not refundable.
No-Show, Unused & Partially Used Services
  • No refund or Travel Credit is ordinarily provided for: no-shows, cancellation after travel has commenced, voluntarily unused services, partly completed holidays, missed hotel nights, missed transfers, missed activities or sightseeing, missed trains or other transport, traveller delays, failure to report at the required time, services missed because of documentation issues, or services missed for reasons attributable to the traveller.
  • If a supplier voluntarily approves a refund in an exceptional case, Atravelx passes on the recoverable amount in USDC under the applicable supplier and booking conditions.
Booking Acceptance
  • By confirming a booking and making payment, you accept the cancellation, refund, date-change, bundled-package and Travel Credit conditions in this policy.
  • Conditions stated in writing for an individual booking (quotation, invoice, voucher or booking confirmation) supplement this policy. Where a supplier's terms are stricter and were disclosed before payment, they apply to that service.
  • A booking is governed by the version of this policy shown on the package page on the booking date, unless a later version is more favourable to you or Atravelx agrees otherwise in writing.
  • For events beyond Atravelx's reasonable control (severe weather, natural disasters, epidemics, war, civil unrest, strikes, government restrictions, border or airport closures, supplier insolvency and similar), refunds, credits, postponements or alternatives depend on the affected supplier's policy and the amounts recoverable. Atravelx helps coordinate with the suppliers.
  • Nothing in this policy restricts any statutory right available to a consumer under applicable law.

Frequently asked questions

Is eight hours on one train too long?

It is a long day, and there is no point pretending otherwise. What makes it work here is what surrounds it: you have rafted, ridden the Albula line and seen a glacier panorama before you board, and three unhurried Zermatt nights waiting at the other end. The coaches have floor-to-ceiling windows and at-seat service, and the scenery genuinely changes every twenty minutes. If you would still rather split it, we can break the journey at Andermatt with an overnight — just ask.

Do we need experience for the rafting?

No. The standard summer run through the Rhine Gorge is grade II to III—bouncy and wet rather than technical —and operators regularly take complete beginners. A qualified guide steers every boat, and wetsuits, buoyancy aids, and helmets are provided. You just need to be able to swim, and operators apply minimum age and weight limits that vary between them. Send us the ages in your group at enquiry, and we will confirm with the operator before you pay anything.

Why run the Glacier Express towards Zermatt instead of away from it?

Two reasons. It puts the Matterhorn at the end of the trip rather than the start, so the week builds rather than peaks on Day 2. And it means your four longest nights are in Zermatt, which is the village people actually want time in — running the other way would leave you with three nights in the Engadin and one night under the Matterhorn.

How early do we need to book?

For July and August, three to four months ahead. The Glacier Express reservation is compulsory, and the best summer departures fill up long before hotels do—that single booking usually constrains your dates, not availability in Zermatt. June and September are generally comfortable at six to eight weeks. We hold the seat first and build the rest of the itinerary around it.

Why Chur? Most Switzerland packages skip it.

It is the gateway to both the Rhine Gorge and the Albula line, and it costs considerably less than St. Moritz or Zermatt for the same standard of room — which is part of how three summits and a rafting day fit within this price. It is also the oldest continuously inhabited town in Switzerland, with a compact old town that is a good, low-effort first evening after a long flight.

Is Matterhorn Glacier Paradise not included? Should we add it?

Not included, deliberately. You already have Gornergrat at 3,089m, which most people consider the better Matterhorn view, and adding a second high cable car would push this package into a higher bracket. If you want to reach 3,883m and see the Glacier Palace ice cave, you'll need an extra night in Zermatt on this 7-day route, and we quote both together so you can compare the cost and decide.

Does travel insurance need to cover the rafting?

Yes, and this is worth checking carefully. Schengen visa rules make travel medical insurance mandatory regardless, but many standard policies exclude white-water rafting by default. Confirm that yours specifically covers it, or buy an adventure add-on. Insurance isn't included in the package because pricing varies so much by age and medical history, but we'll tell you exactly what the policy needs to say.

What if the weather ruins a day?

Being honest about it: this is a compact seven-day route with no spare day, so there is nowhere to move a cancelled activity to. Cable car closures at Diavolezza and Gornergrat happen occasionally due to high winds, and rafting depends on water levels as well as weather. If something cannot run, it is refunded in full rather than swapped for a voucher. If you want a built-in buffer day, ask us for the 9-day version of this route instead. The Glacier Express itself runs in almost all conditions.

When is the best time for this specific route?

Mid-June to early October. You need the rafting season open, the Five Lakes path snow-free, the Gorner Gorge running and the Glacier Express on its summer timetable — all four line up in that window. September is the quietest of the good months, with the clearest air for Gornergrat. Outside the season, this becomes a different trip: the rafting and both walks close, and we would build you something else rather than sell a thinner version of this.

Is the price on this page final?

The displayed amount is per person on a double-bed basis and includes applicable GST—no service fee or tax is added at the end. What sits outside it is listed plainly in the exclusions: flights, visa fee, travel insurance, city tourist tax collected at each hotel, all meals other than the six breakfasts, and any optional add-on you choose. Nothing beyond that list will appear on your invoice.
