About Philippines

Philippines, your way.
With time for what matters.

The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,641 islands in the western Pacific — the only predominantly Christian nation in Asia, a former Spanish colony (333 years, 1565–1898) and then American territory (48 years, 1898–1946), producing a culture that is simultaneously Southeast Asian, Spanish Catholic, and American-influenced in a combination that exists nowhere else in the region.

Key Highlights

Is the Philippines Worth Visiting in 2026?

The Philippines is the most visually specific archipelago in Southeast Asia — 7,641 islands producing a geography that cannot be described except by the word extraordinary: the limestone karst islands of El Nido rising directly from turquoise water, the 4km stretch of powdered coral sand that is Boracay's White Beach, the perfectly cone-shaped Chocolate Hills of Bohol visible at dawn from the viewing deck in the specific brown-green of March dry season. I visited in March 2026 and found the Philippines at its most accessible — dry season firmly established, the water clear, the ferries running on schedule, and the specific energy of Filipino hospitality that makes every guesthouse owner, every boat driver, and every street food vendor the most enthusiastic ambassador for their islands.

Why visit

Why Visit Philippine

The Philippines is 7,641 islands — the world's second-largest archipelago. El Nido in Palawan has been repeatedly voted the world's best island, with lagoons enclosed by 200m limestone cliffs. Coron's WWII Japanese shipwrecks are among the most accessible quality wreck diving in SE Asia. Apo Island near Dumaguete is the Philippines' greatest marine conservation success story — sea turtles approach snorkellers at 1m distance. Siargao's Cloud 9 is a world-class hollow reef break. Batanes, the northernmost province, has Ivatan stone villages and rolling hills that look more Irish than tropical. Visa-free for Indians (30 days). Fly via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Hong Kong. The Banaue Rice Terraces, carved 2,000 years ago by the Ifugao people in Luzon's Mountain Province, cover 10,360 sq km of sculpted hillside that is still in active agricultural use today. Best time: November–May.

El Nido — Limestone Karsts and Hidden Lagoons

The 45 limestone islands of El Nido form the most visually specific geography in Southeast Asia — sheer karst walls rising 50–100m directly from the water, each island containing hidden lagoons accessible only through low cave entrances by kayak or by swimming through narrow passages. The Big Lagoon (the largest, accessible by kayak — the walls enclose a 500m-wide still lagoon with the karst reflections in the water) and the Small Lagoon (a smaller enclosure, accessed through a narrow cave passage — the interior is completely enclosed, the sky visible only through the opening above) are the two essential lagoon experiences on Tour A. The Secret Beach (Tour B) — accessible by swimming through an underwater cave at low tide, emerging inside a completely enclosed cove with a white sand beach that has no visible entrance from outside. The beach is 50m across and entirely surrounded by karst. Standing on the Secret Beach in March at 8am: 15 other people maximum, the karst above, the sea visible only through the underwater passage below the surface. The specific experience of a place that appears to have no entrance.
Coron — WWII Wrecks and the Clearest Lake02 / Place

Coron — WWII Wrecks and the Clearest Lake

The Japanese fleet sunk in Coron Bay on September 24, 1944 by US Navy dive bombers now lies at 10–40m depth — 12 ships turned into coral reefs over 80 years. The Okikawa Maru (a tanker, 160m long, its bridge and superstructure intact and penetrable by certified divers at 10–30m) is the most accessible wreck — the interior corridors, the engine room, the navigation bridge, all visible through scuba or freediving. The Irako (the largest wreck, a supply vessel, 147m long) has the most spectacular coral growth — the hull covered in soft corals, hard corals, and schooling fish at every depth. For non-divers: Kayangan Lake — a brackish inland lake surrounded by limestone cliffs, accessible by a 10-minute wooden stairway trail from the bangka landing. The water at Kayangan has the specific clarity of a lake fed by both freshwater springs and seawater intrusion — 20m+ visibility, the limestone bottom visible from the surface. Officially designated the clearest lake in Asia. March: the lowest water level of the year gives the widest viewing platform and the most accessible trail.
Boracay White Beach — The 4km of Powdered Coral03 / Place

Boracay White Beach — The 4km of Powdered Coral

White Beach is 4km of fine powdered coral sand on the western coast of Boracay island — the sand is not silica (quartz) but ground coral, giving it the specific soft texture (it doesn't heat up the same way as silica sand) and the specific white that the island is named for. Station 1 (the northern section) has the finest sand and the least commercial development on the beach itself — the major resort hotels are set back behind the coconut palms. Station 2 (the central section) has the beach bars, the paraw sailboats (the traditional outrigger sailing catamarans that sail at sunset for ₹1,500–₹2,500 per person), and the maximum beach activity. Station 3 (southern) has the budget guesthouses and the local restaurants. The Boracay sunset: the sun drops directly into the Sibuyan Sea from White Beach at approximately 6pm in March — the paraw sailboats visible against the orange sky, the beach lined with the silhouettes of guests who have walked down specifically for this. The March sunset is the specific Boracay image that has been photographed 40 million times and is still accurate when you see it in person.
Chocolate Hills, Bohol — Dawn at the Viewing Deck04 / Place

Chocolate Hills, Bohol — Dawn at the Viewing Deck

The 1,268 Chocolate Hills of Carmen, Bohol — a geological formation of conical limestone hills covered in grass that turns brown (chocolate) in the dry season (November–May). Each hill is almost perfectly cone-shaped, 30–50m tall, the mathematical regularity of the formation the most immediately striking aspect — standing at the Carmen viewing deck at 7am in March and looking at 50 hills visible simultaneously, each the same shape, is the experience that makes the folklore around their origin (a giant's heartbreak, competing lovers, divine intervention) seem like the correct explanation. March: the peak brown season. The hills are at their most chocolate-specifically chocolate. The dawn light from the viewing deck (arrive before 7am for the pre-tour-bus quiet) illuminates the south face of each hill while the north remains in shadow — the alternating light and shadow across 1,268 cones in the March morning is the finest Chocolate Hills visual of the year.
Intramuros, Manila — The Walled Spanish City05 / Place

Intramuros, Manila — The Walled Spanish City

The 0.67 sq km walled city of Manila, built by the Spanish beginning in 1571, is the most intact colonial urban area in Southeast Asia — the walls, the cobblestone streets, the churches, and the forts survived the Pacific War bombing of 1945 (barely — the city was almost entirely destroyed, and the rebuilt structures use the original foundations and sometimes the original stone). Fort Santiago (the military fortress at the western end of Intramuros, where Jose Rizal spent his last nights before execution in 1896 — the footprints in the stone marking his final walk to Luneta Park are preserved in the floor of the fort passage) is the most emotionally weighted site in Manila. The San Agustin Church (1607, the oldest stone church in the Philippines, UNESCO World Heritage) has survived every earthquake, fire, and bombardment that destroyed the rest of Intramuros — the baroque interior (original painted ceiling, the carved mahogany choir stalls, the 1607 stone floor) is the best-preserved colonial religious interior in the Philippines. The Binondo Chinatown (1km from Intramuros, established 1594 — the oldest Chinatown in the world) for the post-Intramuros lunch.

El Nido Island Hopping Tour A — 6am Departure

Book the earliest Tour A departure from El Nido pier. The Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon before the 10am bangka fleet arrives from the other island hopping companies. The Big Lagoon at 8am: 2 boats. At 11am: 15 boats. Same lagoon, different experience.
Insider tip
Tour A (Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Shimizu Island snorkelling) covers the most iconic El Nido sites. Tour C (Hidden Beach, Matinloc Shrine, Star Beach) adds the Hidden Beach — accessible through a narrow underwater passage at low tide, the enclosed cove on the other side. Do both if time allows. Day tip: Tour A 6am (Big Lagoon + Small Lagoon most important) · Shimizu Island snorkelling · Return El Nido pier by 4pm · Corong-Corong beach sunset (10 min from El Nido town, free).
02
Must do

Coron Wreck Diving — Okikawa Maru First

Book a Coron wreck diving day through any Coron dive shop (certified divers: ₹4,500–₹7,500 for 2 dives with equipment). The Okikawa Maru first (accessible at 10–30m — the bridge and superstructure penetrable with guide) then the Irako (the largest wreck, 147m, for the most spectacular coral coverage).
Insider tip
Non-divers: Kayangan Lake + Twin Lagoons is the Coron day trip equivalent. Kayangan Lake (the clearest lake in Asia) + the Twin Lagoons (warm and cold water sections connected by an underwater channel) + lunch on a deserted beach — the standard Coron non-diving tour (₹1,500–₹2,500/person). Day tip: Coron pier 7am bangka · Kayangan Lake first · Twin Lagoons 10am · Lunch on bangka at deserted beach · Return Coron 4pm.

Boracay White Beach Station 1 — 5:30am

Walk north from wherever you're staying to Station 1 (the quietest section of White Beach) by 5:30am. The fine powdered coral sand, the coconut palms, the March dawn light on the water. Nobody until 7:30am. Then the first vendors. Then the full White Beach day.
Insider tip
The paraw sailboat sunset (book at any beach vendor on White Beach, ₹1,500–₹2,500/person, departs 5pm, 45-minute sail) gives the Boracay sunset from the water — the White Beach visible from the sea, the sun dropping behind the horizon. The classic Boracay ending. Day tip: Station 1 5:30am · Breakfast at Cafe del Sol (Station 1) · Water sports afternoon (kite surfing, paddleboarding at Station 2) · Paraw sunset 5pm · D'Mall dinner (Filipino BBQ open-air stalls).

Rent a motorcycle or book a tricycle from Tagbilaran the evening before for a 5:45am departure. Arrive Carmen viewpoint by 7am. The Chocolate Hills in March dry season morning light, before the tour coaches from Tagbilaran begin arriving at 9am.
Insider tip
The motorcycle circuit through the Bohol interior (Tagbilaran → Chocolate Hills → Loboc River → Bilar Man-made Forest → Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary → back to Tagbilaran) is the most efficient single-day Bohol experience. Rent a motorcycle in Tagbilaran (₹735–₹1,100/day) for full flexibility. Day tip: Chocolate Hills 7am · Loboc River lunch cruise (floating restaurant, traditional Filipino lunch) · Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary 3pm · Return Tagbilaran.

Philippines Travel Tips

Money
  • Philippine ATMs have low withdrawal limits (PHP 10,000–15,000 per transaction) and often charge PHP 200–250 per foreign card transaction — BDO and Metrobank ATMs are the most reliable for foreign cards; withdraw maximum allowed each time.

  • El Nido and Coron have limited ATMs — bring sufficient PHP from Puerto Princesa or Manila; card acceptance at island resorts has improved but is inconsistent for anything below 4-star.

Safety
  • Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago have active conflict zones and kidnapping risk — the DFA Philippines Travel Advisory classifies parts of Mindanao as Alert Level 2–3; check before any Mindanao itinerary and follow Indian Embassy Philippines advisories.

  • Philippine public buses are involved in road accidents at high rates — particularly provincial overnight buses; airlines (Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines) between cities are safer and comparable in price for long distances.

Etiquette
  • Filipino hospitality means "no" is never said directly — "siguro" (maybe) and "mamaya na" (later) often mean no; read context and don't push for a direct answer when a soft response is given.

  • Do not photograph or film Lumad and Palawan tribal communities without asking permission through a community guide — indigenous Filipinos have been commercially exploited through photography without benefit; asking is mandatory.

Scams and Pitfalls
  • NAIA (Manila International Airport) taxi scams — exit only through Terminal's official taxi queue and refuse all approaches inside arrivals hall; fixed-rate coupon taxis are legitimate; metered taxis flagged inside the airport are not.

  • Island-hopping boat "shared tour" that becomes a "private tour" surcharge — confirm in writing whether your booking is shared or private; operators sometimes take only your group on a shared-rate boat and demand private-rate payment at the end.

  • Sunken treasure and gemstone dealers near Coron — buyers are invited to view "Spanish colonial silver" found on a wreck; these are tourist theatres with no genuine treasure involved.

El Nido vs Coron — Which is Better?
Different experiences. El Nido: limestone karst islands, hidden lagoons, snorkelling, island-hopping — the most visually dramatic island complex in the Philippines. Coron: WWII wreck diving, Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoons — the most unique non-beach Philippine experience. Both on the El Nido → Coron fast boat route (4 hours). Include both.

Excellent. El Nido island hopping (kayaking, snorkelling, hidden beaches) requires no diving. Siargao (three-island tour, Sugba Lagoon) requires no diving. Boracay (White Beach) requires no diving. Coron: Kayangan Lake + Twin Lagoons are the non-diver equivalent of the wreck experience. Moalboal sardine run is snorkelling at 3m depth.
