About Vietnam

Vietnam, your way.
With time for what matters.

Vietnam is one of the finest value-for-experience destinations in Asia. Vietnam is a S-shaped country running from the Chinese border in the north to the Gulf of Thailand in the south, and every 200km, the landscape, the food, and the cultural identity change completely. In November 2024 I covered: Hanoi (the Old Quarter's 36 streets, Hoan Kiem Lake at 6 am, the Hoa Lo Prison), Ha Long Bay (2-night cruise, the limestone karst landscape at sunrise), Ninh Binh (Ha Long on land), Sapa (Fansipan cable car, Black Hmong village trek), Da Nang, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City, and the Mekong Delta.

Key Highlights

Is Vietnam Worth Visiting in 2026?

Completely — Vietnam is one of the finest value-for-experience destinations in Asia. In November 2024 I did a complete north-to-south circuit and found the country more varied than any single-country trip I have done: Ha Long Bay at sunrise from the cruise deck, Sapa rice terraces in morning mist, Hoi An lit with lanterns at dusk, and the Mekong Delta by boat at 6am. November is peak season for north and south Vietnam — the one honest note is that central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang) gets its rainy season in October–December. I planned around it and still had 2 good days in Hoi An.

Why visit

Why visit Vietnam.

November is perfect for north Vietnam — Hanoi is cool (18–24°C), Ha Long Bay is calm, Sapa is clear after the summer haze. South Vietnam (HCMC, Mekong) is entering its dry season — ideal. The honest caveat: central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang) gets its rainy season October–December. Plan 2 full Hoi An days with a rain backup plan, and it works.

In November 2024, I watched the Ha Long Bay sunrise from the top deck of our cruise boat. The limestone karsts emerged from morning mist one by one as the light arrived — each one a different silhouette, the water completely still between them. I had seen 400 photographs of Ha Long Bay before visiting. Not one of them was the sunrise.

Ha Long Bay — The Sunrise That Changes Everything01 / Place

Ha Long Bay — The Sunrise That Changes Everything

Ha Long Bay sunrise from the top deck on Day 2. The limestone karsts emerging from mist, the water perfectly still, no sound except birds. I had seen hundreds of Ha Long photos. None of them was this. The 2-night cruise is not optional — it is the Ha Long Bay experience. Ha Long Bay (1,553 islands, UNESCO World Heritage Site) is the defining image of Vietnam — vertical limestone islands rising from emerald waters, carved by 500 million years of geology. Kayaking into Bright Cave (a sea cave with an interior lagoon), visiting the floating fishing villages, and the sunrise from the cruise deck are the three specific experiences. 4 hours by road from Hanoi + a 30-minute boat ride to the cruise departure point.
Hoi An Ancient Town — Dusk is the Only Time02 / Place

Hoi An Ancient Town — Dusk is the Only Time

Hoi An Ancient Town at 6:30 pm on a clear November evening. The silk lanterns lit across every shopfront, the floating lamps on the Thu Bon River, and the Japanese Covered Bridge, with no crowds. Rain came the day before — the clear evening after rain is when Hoi An is the most beautiful. Hoi An (UNESCO World Heritage) was Vietnam's most important trading port from the 15th to 19th centuries — the French, Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch all left architectural traces. The Ancient Town (1km × 1km, 844 heritage structures) is best at dawn (7am, before tours arrive) and at dusk (6–8 pm, when lanterns are lit). The town is also Vietnam's tailoring capital — custom clothing made in 24–48 hours.
Hanoi Old Quarter — 36 Streets03 / Place

Hanoi Old Quarter — 36 Streets

Plastic stool, street-side pho at 6am near Hang Bun street. 40,000 VND. The bowl arrives with fresh herbs, lime, chilli, and bone broth that has been simmering since 3am. Hanoi pho at this hour, at this price, in this setting, is the finest breakfast in Southeast Asia. Hanoi's Old Quarter (36 streets, each historically selling one product — silk street, paper street, tin street) is the cultural core of the capital. Hoan Kiem Lake at dawn (tai chi on the lakeside, the red Huc Bridge, the restored Turtle Tower), the Temple of Literature (Vietnam's oldest university, 1070 AD), and the Ho Chi Minh complex (mausoleum + museum + stilt house) are the key sites.
Sapa — Rice Terraces in Morning Mist04 / Place

Sapa — Rice Terraces in Morning Mist

Muong Hoa Valley rice terraces at 7 am in November, in the mist. The post-harvest terraces are gold-brown, the mist sits in the valley below, and Black Hmong women in traditional embroidered clothing walk the trail. Sapa in November has the clearest skies of the year — Fansipan is visible from the valley on clear mornings. Sapa (1,600m altitude, 380km from Hanoi) is the gateway to the Hoang Lien Son mountains — Vietnam's highest range. The rice terraces in the Muong Hoa Valley (carved by the Hmong and Dao ethnic communities over centuries) are the primary visual feature. November: post-harvest, gold terraces, clear weather — the second-finest terrace season after September's green flush.
Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) — History and Energy05 / Place

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) — History and Energy

War Remnants Museum — 2 hours that reorganised everything I thought I understood about the American War (as the Vietnamese call it). The photographs on the third floor. I did not speak for 30 minutes after leaving. The Cu Chi Tunnels, the next morning, crawling through the 80cm-wide tunnel section. Both are necessary. Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam's commercial capital, with 9 million people) is simultaneously chaotic, modern, and historically layered. The War Remnants Museum (graphic, essential, unforgettable), Cu Chi Tunnels (the 250km underground network 40km northwest), Reunification Palace (intact from 1975, the tanks stopped here), Ben Thanh Market, and the Bui Vien Street (backpacker nightlife street) together give the complete Saigon experience.

Best Things to Do in Vietnam

01
Must do

Ha Long Bay 2-Night Cruise — Sunrise Protocol

Book a 2-night cruise (not 1-night). Wake at 5:30am on Day 2 and go to the top deck — the karst sunrise from the boat is the Ha Long Bay experience that no photograph has ever accurately shown. Kayaking through Bright Cave (a sea cave with interior lagoon) is the afternoon complement.
Insider tip
Book cruise through GetYourGuide or directly with operator — Bhaya Cruise, Paradise Cruises, or Alova for mid-range. Avoid the cheapest budget boats (overcrowded, poor food). USD 150–200/person/night for a genuinely good 2-night cruise. Must Do. Don't book the cheapest 1-night option.
02
Must do

Street Pho in Hanoi — 6am Plastic Stool

Street-side pho from a small shop near Hang Bun or Bat Dan street at 6am. 40,000–60,000 VND (≈ ₹132–₹198). Bone broth simmered overnight, fresh herbs, lime, bean sprouts, rare beef or chicken. The finest pho in Vietnam is not in restaurants — it is at street-side plastic stools in the Hanoi Old Quarter at 6am.
Insider tip
Pho Bat Dan (49 Bat Dan St) and Pho Gia Truyen (49 Bat Dan, different entrance) are Hanoi's most legendary pho shops — arrive by 7am, queue is part of the experience. Every Hanoi Morning. Don't eat pho at hotel breakfast — it is not the same product.
03
Must do

Hoi An at Dusk — 6 pm Sharp

Arrive in the Ancient Town at 6 pm when the lanterns light up, and the day-trip crowds are thinning. Walk Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, cross to the Japanese Covered Bridge (least crowded 6–7 am or after 6 pm), and take a lantern boat on the Thu Bon River.

Insider tip
Full Moon Lantern Festival (15th of each lunar month) — the Ancient Town closes to motorbikes and lights only traditional lanterns. The most extraordinary Hoi An evening of the month. Check dates at hoianfestival.com.vn. Must Do. Don't visit only at midday.
04
Must do

War Remnants Museum — Morning, 2 Hours

Arrive at 8am when the museum opens. Give it 2 full hours — the US War crimes exhibition, the Agent Orange room, the Requiem photography exhibition (photographers from both sides who died covering the war). The most affecting museum in Southeast Asia.
Insider tip
The Requiem exhibition (top floor) is the finest photography exhibition I have seen in any museum — war photographers from both sides, displayed together. Must Do. Don't rush through in 45 minutes.

Vietnam Travel Tips

Money
  • Vietnam's large-denomination Dong notes cause confusion — ₹1 ≈ VND 290; a VND 500,000 note (~₹1,700) looks similar to a VND 50,000 note (~₹170); check denomination carefully before paying in cash.

  • Grab (app-based) operates across all major Vietnamese cities and is 30–50% cheaper than negotiated motorbike taxis (xe ôm) or taxis — set it as your default transport immediately on arrival.

Safety
  • Traffic in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is a genuine hazard — the crossing technique is to walk slowly and steadily; motorbikes flow around pedestrians who maintain consistent speed; sudden stops or panicked running cause accidents.

  • Lone travellers on empty beaches at Mui Ne, Vung Tau, or parts of Da Nang after dark have reported bag snatching — keep to lit areas with other tourists present after 9 pm on any beach.

Etiquette
  • Do not point your feet toward altar areas, Buddha statues, or elders in Vietnam — feet are the lowest and least respectful part of the body; sit cross-legged or with feet tucked away in traditional settings.

  • Bargaining is appropriate at Vietnamese markets (Ben Thanh, Hoi An's covered market, Hanoi's Old Quarter) but not at fixed-price shops — identify whether prices are displayed on tags before attempting to negotiate.

Scams and Pitfalls
  • Motorbike theft of bags from Grab/taxi windows in HCMC — keep windows up in moving vehicles, especially on Nguyen Hue and Le Loi; motorbike thieves reach through open windows at traffic lights.

  • Ha Long Bay day-trip boat scams — "1-day cruise" packages sold for USD 25–35 deliver 3 hours on the bay in a diesel boat with a basic lunch; liveaboard 2-night trips from USD 120+ are a genuinely different product.

  • Hoi An tailors who promise same-day garments — quality drops significantly with rushed production; a minimum of 2–3 fittings over 2 days is the realistic standard for wearable custom clothing.

Genuinely worth it
  • Ha Long 2-night cruise sunrise
Sunrise over limestone karsts not in any photograph accurately. 2-night format the only way.
  • Hanoi pho at 6am
Finest breakfast in Southeast Asia at the finest price.
  • War Remnants Museum
Most affecting museum in Southeast Asia. Essential context for understanding Vietnam.
  • Hoi An lantern dusk
Ancient Town at 6pm lit with silk lanterns. The correct Hoi An.

Vietnam
Vietnam E-Visa for Indians 2026 — Process?
USD 25 (≈ ₹2,100) · 90 days · Single or multiple entry. Apply at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn · Upload passport scan + photo + pay online · Processing 3 working days · Receive PDF e-visa, print and carry. No visa on arrival without prior approval. India is NOT on Vietnam's visa-free list.
Vietnam Trip Cost from India 2026 — 10 Days?
Budget: ₹35,000–₹55,000/person (flights included). Mid-range: ₹70,000–₹1,20,000. Flights: ₹18,000–₹45,000 return. Ha Long 2-night cruise: ₹12,600–₹16,800. E-visa: ₹2,100. Daily on-ground budget: ₹1,500–₹8,000 per person per day.
Best Time to Visit Vietnam from India 2026?
No single answer — Vietnam has 3 climate zones. November–April: best for north (Hanoi, Ha Long, Sapa) and south (HCMC, Mekong). February–August: best for central (Hoi An, Da Nang). November is the finest month for Ha Long Bay, Sapa, and HCMC simultaneously. ⚠️ November: Hoi An/Da Nang are in their rainy season.
Ha Long Bay — 1 Night or 2 Nights?
2 nights, always. The sunrise on Day 2 from the cruise deck is the Ha Long Bay experience. 1-night cruises reach Ha Long by evening, anchor overnight, and return the next morning without the sunrise. Budget USD 150–200/person/night for a mid-range cruise. Book through Bhaya Cruise, Paradise Cruises, or Alova.
Is Hoi An Good in November?
Yes, with caveats. November is Hoi An's rainy season — expect 1–2 rain days per 3-day stay. The town is beautiful in rain (and less crowded). Plan 2 full days with 1 indoor backup (cooking class: 350,000–500,000 VND ≈ ₹1,155–₹1,650 / tailor visit / Hoi An Museum). Clear evenings for the lantern experience are common even in November.
India to Vietnam Flight Cost 2026?
Return economy: ₹18,000–₹45,000 depending on origin. IndiGo (via Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok), Air Asia, Vietnam Airlines are the most popular. Chennai and Bangalore have the cheapest connections via KL. Delhi connections typically via Bangkok or Singapore. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for best fares.
Do I Need a Guide for Sapa Trekking?
Yes — a licensed local guide is mandatory for most Sapa village treks (Forest Department regulation). Cost: 300,000–500,000 VND/day (≈ ₹990–₹1,650). Book through Sapa Sisters (sapasisters.com) or Ethos Vietnam for community-based women guides — income goes directly to local Black Hmong families.
Vietnam Mein Kitne Din Chahiye?
7 days: North Vietnam only (Hanoi + Ninh Binh + Ha Long + Sapa). 10 days: North + Central + South (classic circuit). 14 days: Complete Vietnam including Phong Nha caves and Mekong Delta overnight. Minimum recommended for a meaningful Vietnam experience: 10 days.
