About Kashmir

Kashmir, your way.
With time for what matters.

A shikara ride on Dal Lake, the Gulmarg gondola, the pine forests of Pahalgam — it was a scheduled tourist checklist. In September 2024, I saw Sonmarg and Yusmarg, stayed on a small houseboat at Nigeen Lake, and understood what Kashmir actually is: the place textbooks call 'paradise' and photographers call 'heaven' is, in real life, somewhere the smell of morning chai, the colour of chinar leaves, and the mountain air combine in a way nothing prepares you for.

Key Highlights

Is Kashmir Okay to Visit in 2026?

Yes — but one honest note first. In April 2025, a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam claimed 26 lives. A lot changed after that incident — security has been dramatically increased, all major tourist sites are open, and tourists are returning. As of May 2026, Gulmarg is at ~80% occupancy, Srinagar >50%, Pahalgam >40%. I would not have planned a January 2026 trip, but now — in May 2026 — I can say Kashmir is safe to visit, as long as you stay within the main tourist circuit and follow current advisories. Dal Lake at sunset, the Gondola ride, the meadows of Pahalgam — these are all alive, open, and waiting for you.

Why visit

Why visit Kashmir.

Why Visit Kashmir in 2026? Because there is no landscape like this anywhere else in India. Stepping out of the Gulmarg Gondola at Phase 2 and standing on permanent snow at 4,390m — that is possible without doing a Himalayan trek. Waking up in a houseboat on Dal Lake and looking out at mist-covered mountains through the window — that is not a hotel experience, it is a life experience. And in autumn, when the chinar leaves turn red-orange and Pahalgam's valley looks like an artist's painting — that is what people come back for again and again.

I spent my first night on Dal Lake in October 2022 — a traditional houseboat called Mr. New Prince, in a quiet corner of Nigeen Lake. Waking up at 6am and sitting on the upper deck with a cup of tea while the whole lake was covered in mist and a shikara slowly drifted past with a wazaan rowing — no photograph, no Instagram reel, no travel blog prepares you for that. You are just... there. On the second trip, in September 2024, I saw Yusmarg — 47km from Srinagar — where there were almost no tourists, horses were grazing in the meadows, and the Doodh Ganga river was completely transparent. That version of Kashmir — off-the-beaten-path, away from the crowds — was the more real one. This guide has both versions: popular and less-traveled.

Top 8 Places to Visit in Kashmir 2026

Dal Lake — The Face of Kashmir01 / Place

Dal Lake — The Face of Kashmir

Dal Lake at 6am — mist covering the whole lake, a shikara slowly drifting in from the floating vegetable market (this is real — local farmers actually sell vegetables from boats on Dal Lake), and the silhouette of the Zabarwan Hills on either side — this is a scene I can never adequately describe. I saw this morning for the first time in October 2022 and understood why people come back to Kashmir again and again. Dal Lake is the heart of Srinagar — an 18 sq km freshwater lake at 1,583m altitude. 500+ traditional houseboats, floating gardens (radish, lotus root, cucumber all grown in the lake), connected to Nagin and Nigeen Lakes, and Boulevard Road which runs 15km along the lakeshore.
Gulmarg — Meadow of Flowers02 / Place

Gulmarg — Meadow of Flowers

I still remember the Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2. In October 2022, I had the 9:30 am morning slot — I rose from Phase 1 to Apharwat Peak, and no mountain station in India has ever looked like this to me. At 4,390m, the snow is year-round. The mountains of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were visible on the horizon. The Kashmir Valley far below. On a clear day, Nanga Parbat (8,126m) is visible. This cable car ride is only possible at Gulmarg in India — and that alone justifies a trip there. Gulmarg (2,650m altitude) is 56km from Srinagar — a 2-hour drive through pine forests. In summer, the lush green meadows and skiing slopes become hiking trails. In winter, it is India's best ski resort.
Pahalgam — Valley of Shepherds03 / Place

Pahalgam — Valley of Shepherds

People often think of Pahalgam as a 'Bollywood destination' — Betaab Valley actually took its name not from DDLJ but from the 1983 film 'Betaab.' In October 2022, I reached Betaab Valley at 8 am — tourism hadn't yet begun for the day, there was mist in the pine forest, and the sound of the Lidder River. It is a genuinely cinematic landscape. Aru Valley, 12km from Pahalgam on the other side, is even quieter and beautiful — amazing for Milky Way photography with a local guide. Pahalgam (2,130m) is 96km from Srinagar — a 2.5-hour drive. Along the Lidder River, set between pine forests and open alpine meadows. Important Note 2026: Baisaran Meadows (5km from Pahalgam by trek or pony ride) is where the April 2025 attack occurred. The area is now open, and security has been enhanced.
Sonamarg — Meadow of Gold04 / Place

Sonamarg — Meadow of Gold

Sonamarg in September 2024 was the highlight of my entire trip — and this was the place I wasn't part of any group tour or pre-planned itinerary. I trekked 4km to Thajiwas Glacier — the trail clearly marked, no guide taken, an easy path. I reached the glacier and realised I was at 3,000m, all the surrounding peaks were white, the valley far below was green, and there were only 15 people in the entire place. It was one of those moments when travel genuinely resets something inside. Sonamarg (2,740m) is 87km from Srinagar — a 2.5-hour drive along the Sindh River. Thajiwas Glacier (4km trek or pony ride from base), alpine meadows, and a 360° view of Himalayan peaks. May–October season: road open. Off-season: closed.
Tulip Garden — Asia's Largest Tulip Festival05 / Place

Tulip Garden — Asia's Largest Tulip Festival

I have never personally been in April — both my trips were in October and September. This section in the guide is written from the experiences of 50+ Atravelq clients and J&K Tourism data. What clients consistently report: visit the Tulip Garden in the April 8–15 window — in early April all varieties are in full bloom, the weather is stable, and Gulmarg's snow shows in the background. After April 20 the petals start dropping. 1.5 million+ tulips, 69 varieties, 30 hectares — Asia's largest tulip garden. On the slopes of the Zabarwan Hills, with views over Dal Lake. The garden added 7 new hybrid varieties in 2026. Entry 9am–7pm.

Best 10 Things to Do in Kashmir 2026

01
Must do

Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2 — Sunrise at Apharwat Peak

The Phase 2 Gondola is a genuine once-in-a-lifetime experience — if that phrase still works. Rising from Kongdoori (Phase 1 endpoint, 3,080m) to Apharwat Peak (4,390m, 3,979m actual summit point) takes 12 minutes. Up there, the snow is year-round — 6 feet deep in January, 2–3 feet even in June. On the horizon: the Kashmir Valley, the mountains of Pakistan, and on a clear day, Nanga Parbat (8,126m — the world's 8th highest peak). When I took the first look from the top one morning in October 2022, I genuinely couldn't speak for a few seconds. This is a description, not an exaggeration. Duration: Forenoon slot is best (9 am–11 am) · Total experience: 3–4 hours, including both phases.

Insider tip

Don't book the ticket through your hotel — agents take 20–30% extra for the same ticket.

02
Must do

Dal Lake Houseboat — One Night is Mandatory

The Dal Lake houseboat experience isn't just an accommodation choice — it is part of Kashmir's cultural identity. Inside: carved walnut wood walls, traditional Kashmiri carpets, bay windows with a view of the lake. The morning breakfast — kahwa chai, kandur bread (local bakers deliver by boat), and eggs — is served on the lake amid the mist. In the evening, a shikara ride before sunset, back to the houseboat, and a genuinely unmatched night above the quiet lake. I spent my first night on a houseboat in October 2022 — I hadn't thought before that this even existed in India. Duration: Minimum 1 night · 2 nights ideal.

Insider tip

Nigeen Lake houseboats are 15–20% cheaper than Dal Lake, the water is cleaner, and the atmosphere is genuinely quieter.

03
Must do

Sunrise Shikara Ride — 5:45 am

The sunset shikara ride is famous — but the sunrise ride is genuinely extraordinary. 5:45 am: complete silence on the lake, mist covering everything, the floating vegetable market boats slowly coming in (local farmers are on the lake from 4:30 am), and the first light spreading slowly over the Zabarwan Hills. In an hour, you can circle the whole lake — lotus beds, floating gardens, Char Chinar island (an island of four chinar trees in the middle of the lake), and the line of houseboats. The sunrise shikara in October 2022 is my clearest Kashmir memory.

Insider tip

Shikara operators have partnerships with houseboats and sometimes take you to garden/craft shops — politely decline if you're not interested.

04
Must do

Wazwan Dinner — 30-Course Kashmiri Feast

Wazwan is Kashmir's traditional ceremonial meal — up to 36 dishes, mostly meat-based, traditionally cooked by a waza (master chef). Rogan Josh (aromatic lamb in Kashmiri red chilli gravy), Yakhni (lamb in yogurt), Aab Gosht (lamb in milk), Tabak Maaz (fried lamb ribs), Seekh Kabab, and Gushtaba (minced meat balls in yogurt — Wazwan's concluding dish). In the traditional setting, four people sit together around a traem (large copper plate). I had my first authentic Wazwan at Ahdoos Hotel in Srinagar in October 2022 — Gushtaba was the most surprising dish, extraordinary in both texture and flavour in an unexpected way.

Insider tip

Vegetarian Wazwan exists — Kashmiri vegetarian dishes include Dum Aloo (lotus root based variations), Haak Saag, Nadru Yakhni (lotus stem in yogurt), and Chaman (paneer). These dishes are equally extraordinary. Both Ahdoos Hotel and Mughal Darbar offer vegetarian set meals.

Travel Tips

Money

No special permit for Indian citizens — only a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, DL).

Money

Book the Gondola ticket FIRST — once the trip is confirmed, the first step is to book the Gulmarg Gondola at etickets.jammukashmircablecar.com.

Money

Saffron buying: Buy from reputable spice shops at Polo View Market or Lal Chowk. 1g of certified Kashmiri saffron costs ₹400–₹800.

Money
Flight booking: Delhi → Srinagar booked 6–8 weeks ahead costs ₹3,000–₹5,000 one-way. Last minute it becomes ₹8,000–₹15,000+. If a Kashmir trip is planned, lock the flights first and figure the rest out after.
Safety
2026 Safety Status: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg are all officially open and operational. Security has been significantly enhanced post the April 2025 incident. Tourist helpline: 8899941010 / 8899931010 (24/7). Check government advisories regularly before travel.
Safety
Strictly avoid border areas: Areas near the Line of Control — Gurez, Keran, Teetwal, Machil, the Kupwara border belt — are not for regular tourists. Special permits and registered operators are required to go there.
Safety

Weather preparedness: The weather changes rapidly in Kashmir, especially in Gulmarg and Sonamarg. Pack layered clothing for every season.

Etiquette

Religious sites dress code: Jama Masjid, Makhdoom Sahib shrine, Hazratbal dargah — covered shoulders and below-knee clothing mandatory.

Expert view

What is worth it,
and what to avoid.

Last reviewed 2026-05-11.

Genuinely worth it
  • Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2
Year-round snow at Himalayan altitude in India and a 360° Himalayan view from a cable car — this combination is found only at Gulmarg.
  • Houseboat at Nigeen Lake
Dal Lake houseboats are famous, Nigeen Lake houseboats are better value. The morning mist, chai on the deck, the sound of a shikara — this is the core memory of Kashmir that no hotel can give you.
  • Mughal Gardens Sunrise
Three gardens, four centuries of history, and a combined view of Dal Lake plus the Zabarwan Hills. Kashmir's most undervalued experience.
  • Wazwan Dinner at Ahdoos / Mughal Darbar.
Kashmiri cuisine is UNESCO listed — Rogan Josh, Gushtaba, Yakhni together in one setting.

The main tourist circuit (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg) is completely open without paperwork. For border zones (Gurez, Keran), an NOC/PAP is arranged through a registered tour operator. 7-day trip (excluding flights): Budget ₹18,000–₹25,000/person · Mid-range ₹30,000–₹50,000 · Premium ₹60,000–₹1,00,000+. What is the Gulmarg Gondola ticket price and how do I book it?
Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori): ₹800/person · Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak): ₹1,000/person · Total: ₹1,800/person. Tatkal: ₹1,110 (Phase 1) + ₹1,310 (Phase 2). What is the best time to visit Kashmir?
April (Tulip Festival — Asia's largest), May–June (peak summer, lush green), September–October (chinar foliage, 20–30% cheaper, my personal top pick), December–February (Gulmarg skiing). October is my #1 recommendation — the chinar colours, manageable crowds, cheaper hotels, and the Gondola without a long wait. Source: SuzuTravels May 2026 · NatureConnect Jan 2026.
Is Kashmir safe in 2026?
The main tourist zones (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg) are open and operational as of May 2026 — security has been significantly enhanced after the April 2025 Pahalgam attack. Gulmarg ~80% occupancy, Srinagar >50%, Pahalgam >40% (The Week, May 2, 2026). J&K Tourism's tourist helpline is available 24/7: 8899941010. Strictly avoid border zones (LoC areas). Check current government advisories before travelling.
What is the Dal Lake houseboat cost in 2026?
Budget houseboat: ₹2,000–₹3,000/night (meals extra). Mid-range (recommended): ₹4,000–₹8,000/night (typically breakfast + dinner included). Luxury: ₹10,000–₹20,000+. Personal recommendation: Nigeen Lake houseboats are 15–20% cheaper than Dal Lake, the water is cleaner, and the atmosphere is quieter. Source: Cholan Tours April 2026 · Kiomoi 2026.
How far is Gulmarg from Srinagar and how do I get there?
56km, a 2-hour drive through pine forests. Options: Private Innova/Sedan ₹1,500–₹2,500 one way (or include it in a daily package) · Shared taxi ₹300–₹500/person (morning only). Important: Out-of-state vehicles (Delhi, Punjab) are not allowed for sightseeing — it is a local Kashmir taxi union rule. Hire a local cab from Srinagar.
How many days are enough for Kashmir?
5 days: Express circuit (Srinagar + Gulmarg + Pahalgam). 7 days: Classic (Srinagar + Gulmarg + Pahalgam + Sonamarg). 10 days: Complete (classic + Yusmarg + Doodhpathri + offbeat). I recommend 7 days minimum — rushing Kashmir is the biggest regret. To properly enjoy Dal Lake, the Gondola, and Pahalgam — all three — you need time.
