About Leh Ladakh

Leh Ladakh, your way.
With time for what matters.

Ladakh is India's northernmost Union Territory — 59,146 sq km of high-altitude cold desert between the Himalayas and the Karakoram ranges, bordering China and Pakistan, at an average altitude of 3,500m. It is simultaneously the least densely populated region of India and the most visually concentrated — every 50km of driving produces a completely different landscape: red-brown desert mountains, turquoise glacial lakes, Buddhist monasteries perched on cliff faces, and the high passes where the road briefly touches the sky.

Key Highlights

Is Ladakh Worth Visiting in 2026?

Ladakh is the most extraordinary landscape in India — and I have visited four times over nine years to confirm this with each trip. In July 2025 I drove the complete summer circuit (Leh → Nubra Valley → Pangong → Tso Moriri → Zanskar) and found Pangong Lake at sunrise more overwhelming than any previous visit. In Winter 2023 I walked the Chadar Trek — the frozen Zanskar River in January — and found the most physically demanding and most visually specific experience available in India. There is no equivalent to either.

Why Visit Leh Ladakh

Why Ladakh in 2026?
Because Ladakh is the one Indian destination that consistently exceeds expectations regardless of how many photographs you have seen. Pangong Lake is bluer than its photographs. The Chadar Trek is colder, more difficult, and more extraordinary than any description. Khardung La is higher and the view more disorienting than any road story. Four visits over nine years and each one has produced the same response: this is more than I expected.

In July 2025 I reached Pangong Lake at 5:15 am — before the first tourist jeep of the day arrived. The lake was completely still. The colour was the specific deep cobalt-turquoise that Pangong produces when the light is low, and the sky is cloudless. I have seen Pangong in 2016, 2019, and 2025. The 5 am version is a different lake from the 10 am version.
In Winter 2023, I walked Day 3 of the Chadar Trek on frozen Zanskar River at -27°C. The river ice was transparent in sections — the water visible and moving 40cm below my feet. The gorge walls rose 300m above the ice. The only sound was the occasional crack of the ice settling. This is not a trek. It is a walk through a frozen cathedral.

Key Features of Leh Ladakh

01
Pangong Tso
The 134km glacial lake at 4,350m changes colour from turquoise to deep blue to violet as the light moves. The July version and the February version are two entirely different lakes.
02
Thiksey Monastery at 6:30am
The morning prayer at the "Little Potala" with the butter lamps lit and the monks on the rooftops. At 6:30am: 10 visitors. At 10am: 200.
03
Khardung La
One of the highest motorable roads in the world at 5,359m. The 7am drive in July gives the pass before the tourist convoy — the oxygen at 52% of sea level is immediately noticeable the moment you step out.
04
Nubra Valley
The cold desert between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges has the Bactrian double-humped camel on sand dunes with the Karakoram peaks above. The July apricot harvest gives the valley its most specific seasonal flavour.
05
Tso Moriri
The remote glacial lake at 4,522m accessible by 2-day journey from Leh has the black-necked crane breeding colony on its north shore. One of the most rarely visited extraordinary landscapes in India.
06
Hemis Monastery + Festival
The Drukpa Kagyu monastery in July gives the Cham masked dance festival. The giant thangka (embroidered scroll painting) is unrolled from the monastery roof once every 12 years in the Monkey Year.

Best 10 Things to Do in Ladakh

01
Must do

Pangong Lake Camping — 5am Alarm

Camp overnight at Pangong (Spangmik or Man village camping zones, ₹1,500–₹4,000/person/night including dinner + breakfast). Wake at 5am. Walk 200m to the lakeshore. The cobalt-turquoise lake before the tourist jeeps arrive. This is the Pangong that all the photographs are trying to capture and almost never do.
Insider tip
The western shore (Spangmik) is closer to Leh and more popular. The eastern shore (Man-Merak section, additional ILP required) has fewer tourists and arguably more dramatic mountain reflections. Ask your Leh hotel for the permit requirement when planning. Must Do. Don't make Pangong a rushed day trip without overnight.
02
Must do

Chadar Trek — January or February Only

9 days on the frozen Zanskar River at -20 to -35°C. The most physically extraordinary experience available in India. Not for everyone — requires good physical fitness, cold tolerance, and a registered guide. For those who do it: it is the definitive Ladakh memory.
Insider tip
Book Chadar Trek through a registered Ladakh Adventure Tourism operator minimum 2 months ahead of January. The season is weather-dependent — a warm January can make the ice unstable and the trek is cancelled. Reputable operators: Adventure Sindbad Leh, Rimo Expeditions. Winter Only. Don't attempt without a certified registered local guide.
03
Must do

Thiksey Monastery — Morning Prayers, 6am

Drive 17km from Leh to Thiksey and arrive by 6am for the morning puja. The conch, the drums, the butter lamps, the maroon-robed monks chanting — 45 minutes of the most authentic Buddhist monastery experience accessible from Leh without trekking.
Insider tip
The Thiksey rooftop (accessible after the puja) gives the finest view of the Indus Valley with the Himalayan range behind. The best photography from the roof is between 7am and 9am. Must Do. Don't arrive at 10am with the tour groups.
04
Must do

Khardung La — Early Morning Crossing

Cross Khardung La early (before 9am in July) — the peak season traffic begins at 9am and queues form quickly on the narrow single-lane summit road. June and September have virtually no queues at any time.
Insider tip
Do not stop for more than 15 minutes at the summit (5,359m). The altitude gain from Leh is 1,800m in 2 hours — even acclimatised visitors can feel the exertion. Photograph, buy a cup of tea (₹30 at the Army canteen), and continue. On Route to Nubra. Don't linger at the summit if showing any altitude symptoms.

FAQs

Common questions
about Leh Ladakh.

Visas, costs, safety and the practical questions travellers ask us most.

Leh Ladakh
Leh Ladakh, India
Best Time to Visit Leh Ladakh 2026?
June–September for the complete summer circuit (all passes open, Pangong, Nubra, Tso Moriri accessible). July is peak — best weather, all roads fully open, Hemis Festival. June: quietest and best value. January–February: Chadar Trek only (frozen Zanskar River). Avoid October onwards for standard tourism as passes begin closing.
Inner Line Permit — How to Apply 2026?
Apply at lahdcpermit.org (online) or DC Office Leh (in person). Fee: ₹200–₹400/person per zone. Required for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Tso Moriri, and Dah-Hanu. Carry Aadhaar card + passport photo. Processing: same day to 24 hours. Carry both digital and printed copies at all army checkpoints.
Ladakh Trip Cost 2026 — 10 Days?
Budget: ₹25,000–₹40,000/person including flights. Mid-range: ₹50,000–₹85,000. Flights: ₹5,000–₹16,000 return Delhi–Leh. Private cab for circuit: ₹4,000–₹6,000/day. Daily on-ground: Budget ₹2,000–₹4,000 · Mid ₹5,000–₹10,000.
Is Ladakh Safe for Acclimatisation?
Yes — with the mandatory 48-hour Leh rest. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) affects approximately 25% of visitors who skip acclimatisation. Rest in Leh for 2 full days on arrival, drink 3–4 litres of water daily, avoid alcohol and heavy exercise. SNM Hospital Leh (01982-252014) is equipped for altitude sickness treatment. Consult a doctor about Diamox before travel.
What is the Chadar Trek?
A 9-day winter trek (January–February) walking on the frozen Zanskar River — the river freezes to form a natural ice "chadar" (blanket) highway through the Zanskar Gorge, the only access route to some villages in winter. Temperature: -20 to -35°C. Requires registered local guide (mandatory), cold-weather equipment, and good physical fitness. Cost: ₹25,000–₹45,000/person including guide + camp + food.
Manali to Leh Road or Flight?
Road (June–October): 2 days, 479km, 5 mountain passes — the finest road journey in India. More gradual altitude gain than flying — physiologically safer. Flight (year-round): 1.5 hours, Delhi–Leh — requires strict 48-hour acclimatisation in Leh after arrival. Road for those with time; flight for those without. Both require the 48-hour Leh rest before excursions.
Pangong vs Tso Moriri — Which is Better?
Different experiences. Pangong (134km long, 5 hrs from Leh): famous, spectacular, increasingly crowded in July–August. Tso Moriri (28km long, 7 hrs from Leh): less known, more remote, bar-headed geese, almost always empty at dawn. Both deserve overnight stays. Pangong is not better than Tso Moriri — they are the same quality, different scales and crowds.
Ladakh Mein Kitne Din Chahiye?
7 days minimum: Leh + Nubra + Pangong. 12 days: complete circuit including Tso Moriri and monasteries. 15+ days: include Zanskar Valley. For Chadar Trek: 12 days dedicated (2 days Leh + 9 days trek + 1 day return). The 48-hour acclimatisation is built into any itinerary. Never rush Ladakh.
