Bali, your way.
With time for what matters.
Bali is an island of 5,780 sq km in the Indonesian archipelago — the only Hindu-majority province in a Muslim-majority country, a fact that explains everything specific about Bali: the temple culture (20,000+ temples), the daily offerings (canang sari placed at every doorstep and shrine twice daily), the traditional performing arts (Kecak fire dance, Legong dance), and the specific spiritual atmosphere that distinguishes Bali from every other beach island in Southeast Asia.
Is Bali Worth Visiting in 2026?

Why Visit Bali
Bali is the only Hindu-majority island in Indonesia — and the temple ceremonies, rice terrace offerings, and gamelan music make the spiritual culture visible in daily life, not just in tourist shows. Ubud is surrounded by UNESCO-listed subak irrigation systems still in active agricultural use. Uluwatu's clifftop temple above the Indian Ocean is one of the most dramatically positioned religious sites in SE Asia. Diving at Menjangan Island gives 20–30m visibility. Kecak fire dance at sunset over the ocean is irreplaceable. Visa on Arrival available for Indians at Ngurah Rai Airport (IDR 500,000). Direct flights from Mumbai and Delhi. The sacred Besakih Mother Temple on the slopes of Mount Agung is the most important Hindu temple in Bali, used continuously for 1,000 years of ceremonies marking every life milestone. Best time: April–October (dry season). Avoid December–January — monsoon and peak price coincide.

Key Features of Bali
Best places to visit in Bali
01 / PlaceUbud — Bali's Spiritual and Artistic Core
Ubud Market at 7 am before the tourist vendors set up — the back section where the Balinese buy their morning produce, incense sticks, and canang sari offerings. The specific smell: frangipani, clove incense, fresh turmeric root, and the coconut oil from the nearby warungs. This is the Ubud that exists before the souvenir stalls open. Ubud (population 30,000) is the cultural heart of Bali — surrounded by rice fields, 20 minutes from Tegallalang, the base for Mount Batur day trips, and the location of the finest restaurants and spas on the island. The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary (700+ long-tailed macaques in a temple forest), the Ubud Palace (evening dance performances), the Art Market (textiles, silver, woodcarving), and the network of rice field walks are all within 2km of the town centre.
02 / PlaceTegallalang Rice Terraces — 7am
Tegallalang at 7 am on May 5. The mist was in the lower valley. Four other people. The emerald green of the rice terraces in May morning light — the specific shade of green that Bali's promotional images are built on — is real. By 9 am, 200 tour group visitors had arrived with identical phone angles. The 7 am alarm costs nothing. The Tegallalang rice terraces (Ceking rice terraces, 20 minutes north of Ubud) use the traditional Balinese subak irrigation system (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) — a cooperative water temple network that manages rice-field irrigation. The terraces cascade down the Ceking River valley in a series of curved steps. May: fully green after the wet-season rains, the clearest visual of the year.
03 / PlaceUluwatu — Clifftop Temple and Kecak Fire Dance
Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu, May 2022. 150 men chanting in rhythm around a fire at the cliff edge, the sunset behind them over the Indian Ocean. The sound — not the visual — is the thing. The collective "cak-cak-cak" at 150 voices is physical at close range. The Ramayana story it narrates is secondary to the experience of being in the sound. Pura Luhur Uluwatu (Uluwatu Temple) sits at 70m above the Indian Ocean on the southwestern tip of the Bukit Peninsula. One of Bali's six directional temples (Sad Kahyangan), it is considered the temple that guards Bali from evil spirits from the sea. The clifftop views are the finest in southern Bali. Warning: monkeys at Uluwatu are aggressive — secure glasses, phones, and hats before entering the temple grounds.
04 / PlaceNusa Penida — One Day, Three Viewpoints
Kelingking Beach viewpoint in May 2022 — the cliff shaped like a T-Rex head above a pristine white beach, the turquoise water below, and a 45-minute near-vertical descent to the beach if you want to swim. I descended. The beach had 6 people. The climb back up took 75 minutes. Both the top view and the beach view from the bottom are the correct Nusa Penida experience. Nusa Penida (island, 45 min fast boat from Sanur) is the dramatic offshore island southeast of Bali — rugged limestone cliffs, crystal-clear water, and three specific sites: Kelingking Beach (T-Rex cliff viewpoint — the most photographed image in Bali since 2018), Angel's Billabong (natural rock infinity pool, safe in calm conditions only), and Broken Beach (a circular cove with a natural arch — free viewpoint from above). Crystal Bay (manta ray snorkelling, October–March seasonal) is the fourth site for wildlife seekers.
05 / PlaceMount Batur Sunrise Trek
Summit of Mount Batur at 6:30 am — the crater lake below catching the first light, steam rising from the fumaroles near the path, and Mount Agung (Bali's sacred volcano) visible 30km east across the caldera. The guide cooked eggs on a lava rock using the volcanic steam heat. This is not a metaphor — it literally works. Mount Batur (1,717m) is an active volcano in the Kintamani caldera — the caldera itself (13km wide) was formed by a catastrophic eruption approximately 29,000 years ago. The current cone is the fourth volcano to occupy the caldera. The trek (2 hours up, 1.5 hours down) is the most accessible volcano sunrise in Southeast Asia — with no technical climbing, a well-marked path, and mandatory local guides (Association of Mount Batur Trekking Guides) to ensure safety and support the local Kintamani community.Ubud Market at 7 am before the tourist vendors set up — the back section where the Balinese buy their morning produce, incense sticks, and canang sari offerings. Tirta Empul at 9 am on a Tuesday — Balinese Hindus performing the Melukat purification ceremony (moving through a series of holy spring water spouts while praying). The ceremony is not performed for tourists — it is the actual Balinese Hindu ritual that has taken place at this spring since 962 AD. Visitors can participate (wading through the cold spring water pools is permitted, but modest clothing is mandatory). The respectful participation — standing in the same spring water, in the same stone pool, performing the same movements — was the most spiritually affecting experience of the Bali trip. Tirta Empul (Holy Water Temple, Tampaksiring) is a 10th-century Hindu water temple built around a natural spring — believed to have been created by the god Indra as a source of nectar for his army. The Melukat ceremony (ritual purification) has been performed here continuously for over 1,000 years. The inner courtyard pools (where Balinese Hindu worshippers perform purification rites) are the defining experience.
Sidemen Valley road ends at 4 pm — the rice terrace valley opening out with Mount Agung at the far end catching the late afternoon light. A Balinese farmer was walking the terrace bunds. Three dogs slept on the road. No other tourists visible in any direction. This is what Tegallalang looked like before Instagram. Sidemen (East Bali, 1.5 hours from Ubud) is a valley of rice terraces, weaving villages, and the most direct view of Mount Agung available from the road. The traditional ikat weaving (songket silk with gold thread) produced here is the finest in Bali — the village women can be seen weaving on traditional back-strap looms outside their homes. The valley has 3–4 small homestays and almost no other tourists. The rice terrace walks here are longer and more varied than Tegallalang.
Seminyak Beach at 5:45 pm — the sunset into the Indian Ocean, the beach clubs behind me, the fishermen on the beach with their traditional jukung outrigger boats, and a beach vendor selling fresh coconuts for 20,000 IDR (≈ ₹106). The beach club sunset (expensive) and the fresh coconut sunset (cheap) are the same sunset. Both are correct. Seminyak and Canggu form the western beach coast of South Bali — Seminyak (upscale beach clubs, boutique hotels, fine dining), Canggu (surfer culture, café scene, Echo Beach, Berawa Beach, the digital nomad hub). Bali's most famous beach club strip. The surf at Canggu's Echo Beach is beginner-friendly in May (small to medium waves) — the main surf break at Uluwatu and Padang Padang (Bukit Peninsula) is more advanced.

Tegallalang Rice Terraces — 7am
Walk down into the Tegallalang terraces at 7 am before any tour group arrives. The terrace walk takes 45 minutes at the lower levels — concrete paths between the rice rows, the valley visible below, the sound of the subak irrigation water running through the channels.
Insider tip
Kecak Fire Dance at Uluwatu — 6pm
Buy tickets at the Uluwatu ticket counter at 4:30 pm upon arrival. Watch the sunset from the cliff (free, extraordinary) from 5 pm–6 pm. At 6 pm: the Kecak performance begins in the clifftop amphitheatre. The combination of the sound, the sunset, and the cliff is the definitive Bali evening.
Insider tip
Mount Batur Sunrise — 4:30 am Departure
Insider tip
Nusa Penida Day Trip — Kelingking First
Take the 8 am fast boat from Sanur, hire a motorbike + driver on the island, and go to Kelingking Beach viewpoint first (50 minutes from the ferry port). The T-Rex cliff, the beach, and the descent if you're fit enough. Then Angel's Billabong, then Broken Beach — all within 45 minutes of each other.
Insider tip
Balinese Massage — Local Spa, Not Hotel Spa
A traditional Balinese pijat massage at a local spa in Ubud. The Balinese massage technique — long strokes + acupressure + gentle stretching — is the most complete of Southeast Asian massage styles.
Insider tip
Warung Breakfast — Nasi Goreng
A warung is the Balinese equivalent of a dhaba — a small family-run restaurant. Nasi goreng (fried rice, egg, satay, vegetables, prawn crackers). Fresh coconut. Balinese coffee (kopi Bali — very strong, served with grounds. The finest breakfast in Bali costs ₹530 total at any local warung.
Insider tip
Temple Visit Protocol — What Nobody Tells You
Insider tip
The three most significant Bali temple experiences: Tirta Empul (holy spring, morning), Tanah Lot (sea temple on a rock, sunset, free exterior), and Besakih. Multiple Temples. Don't enter inner temple areas during active ceremonies without explicit invitation.
Learn to Surf — Kuta or Canggu
Surf lessons at Kuta Beach (most beginner-friendly) or Canggu's Batu Bolong Beach: for a 2-hour lesson including a board + instructor. Kuta has the gentlest beginner waves in Bali. May: small to medium surf — ideal for first-timers.
Insider tip
Tanah Lot Sunset — Free Exterior
Tanah Lot (the sea temple on a rock platform 300m offshore, accessible by a natural causeway at low tide) is one of Bali's most famous sunset locations. The temple itself is closed to visitors (Hindu worshippers only) — the experience is the exterior and the sunset view. Sunset from the main viewpoint: free.
Insider tip
Ubud Market — 7am Before the Tourist Shift
Ubud Traditional Art Market operates in two modes: the 6 am–8 am section (Balinese traders buying produce, offerings, and daily goods) and the 8 am–6 pm section (tourist souvenir stalls with an aggressive bargaining culture). The 7 am walk through the early market — past the turmeric sellers, the incense vendors, the women assembling canang sari — is the authentic Ubud market experience.

Bali Travel Tips
Always pay for Bali Visa on Arrival (IDR 500,000 / ~₹2,500) at the official e-VOA kiosks at the airport before the immigration queue — agents who approach you offering "fast processing" charge IDR 800,000–1,000,000 for the same visa.
Withdraw rupiah in large denominations (IDR 100,000 notes) from ATMs affiliated with BCA or BNI banks — independent ATMs in Kuta and Seminyak charge IDR 50,000–75,000 per transaction and sometimes have dynamic currency conversion traps.
Bali's traffic is genuinely dangerous — motorbike hire is extremely common but helmet quality is poor, roads are narrow, and left-hand driving for Indian travellers requires adjustment; hospital treatment for road injuries is a leading cause of traveller medical claims in Bali.
Do not touch temple offerings (canang sari) placed on the ground, steps, or pavements — they are fresh daily offerings to Hindu deities, not decoration, and interfering with them is considered offensive.
Wear a sarong (provided free at temple entrances) when entering any Balinese Hindu temple — a sarong around the waist is mandatory, and menstruating women are asked not to enter temple inner sanctuaries.
Cremation ceremonies (ngaben) are public and not private — visitors may watch respectfully from a distance, but do not push to the front, point cameras aggressively at the body, or talk loudly during proceedings.
Kuta and Legian taxi drivers almost universally refuse to use meters — Grab and Gojek apps give fixed prices upfront and are 40–60% cheaper than negotiated taxi fares for the same journey.
Money changer dynamic currency conversion scam — some Kuta money changers count out notes theatrically fast and short-change by IDR 50,000–100,000 per transaction; count every note yourself before leaving the counter.
Surfboard hire operators near Kuta beach sometimes charge for pre-existing damage when you return — photograph the board from all angles before taking it.
What is worth it,
and what to avoid.
