About Kerala

Kerala, your way.
With time for what matters.

Kerala is India's southwesternmost state — 38,852 sq km running between the Western Ghats in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west, producing a series of completely distinct landscapes in a narrow band: the mountain tea estates of Munnar (1,600m), the spice forests of Thekkady and Wayanad, the 900km network of backwater canals and lagoons from Kottayam to Alleppey, the colonial heritage of Fort Kochi, and the cliff beaches of Varkala and Kovalam.

Key Highlights

Is Kerala Worth Visiting in January 2026?

Kerala in January is the finest version of the state — the post-monsoon green has settled into the deeper, more confident colour of January, the hill stations (Munnar at 1,600m) are at their coolest and most atmospheric, the backwaters are calm and reflecting, and the wildlife sanctuaries (Periyar, Wayanad) are at peak activity before the pre-monsoon dry heat. I visited Kerala in January 2022 on a complete circuit and found it the most sensory state I have travelled in India — a place where the air smells different (cardamom, black pepper, damp earth, the sea), the food is different from any other regional Indian cuisine, and the landscape changes so completely from the mountains to the backwaters to the coast that it does not feel like one state.

Why visit

Why Visit Kerala

Kerala stretches 580km along India's southwest coast with a backwater network of 1,500km of canals, rivers, and lakes running parallel to the Arabian Sea. Alleppey's houseboats navigate coconut-fringed canal networks at 4km/hour — the most specifically Kerala experience available. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary (Thekkady) offers wild elephant, bison, and sambar viewing by bamboo raft at dawn. Munnar's tea estates at 1,600m cover entire hillsides in unbroken green. Thrissur Pooram (April–May) fields 36 caparisoned elephants in the most visually spectacular Hindu festival in India. Wayanad has tribal communities, waterfalls, and one of India's most diverse coffee and spice plantation regions. No passport needed. Fly to Kochi or Trivandrum. The Kalaripayattu martial art, considered the world's oldest surviving combat system (3rd century BC origins), was developed in Kerala and is performed at demonstration centres in Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur. Best time: September–February.

Key Features of Kerala Tours

01
Munnar Tea Gardens
Western Ghats at 1,600m: 30,000 acres of tea estates run by Tata Tea blanket the Munnar hills — the highest altitude tea cultivation in south India. The January morning mist rises through the tea bushes at specific angles that exist only in the Western Ghats at this altitude.
02
Eravikulam National Park
Nilgiri Tahr Territory: A 97 sq km national park near Munnar — the last significant population of the Nilgiri Tahr (endangered mountain ungulate found only in the Western Ghats). In January, the tahr are visible at close range (10–30 metres).
03
Alleppey Houseboat
Kerala's Backwater Network: The Vembanad Lake and Kuttanad backwater system (900km of canals, rivers, lagoons between Kottayam and Alleppey) — one of India's most distinctive landscapes. Overnight houseboat (kettuvallam).
04
Thekkady / Periyar
Spice Forest Wildlife: Periyar National Park (925 sq km, centred on Periyar Lake) is one of India's finest tiger and elephant reserves. The Thekkady experience is the spice forest landscape: cardamom, pepper, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon — and wild elephants at the lakeside.
05
Fort Kochi
Colonial Kerala: The 500-year colonial history of Kochi in a 2km radius: Chinese fishing nets (cheena vala, 14th–15th century), Mattancherry Palace, the Paradesi Jewish Synagogue (1568), St. Francis Church (1503 — where Vasco da Gama was originally buried), colonial-era streets.
06
Wayanad
Coffee, Mist and 8,000-Year-Old Cave Art: Wayanad in northern Kerala — important spice-growing region (pepper, cardamom, coffee, tea, vanilla), tribal populations, and the Edakkal Caves (prehistoric rock engravings 8,000–6,000 BCE). Chembra Peak (2,100m).

Munnar — The Hill Station That Earns Its Reputation

Kerala’s primary hill station is located 130 km east of Kochi in the Idukki district—you’re greeted by misty mornings and over 30,000 acres of tea gardens, India’s largest contiguous tea plantation managed by Tata Consumer Products. Meaning "three rivers" after its mountain stream confluence (Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundaly), Munnar leads to the stunning Top Station (1,868m) on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. A 45-minute early morning drive (32 km) takes you above the cloud line, revealing what is arguably the finest viewpoint in Kerala . By 7:00 AM, looking south across the Western Ghats , the entire valley is submerged in white clouds, offering rare glimpses of emerald tea estates below against a distinct high-altitude sky—and access to this breathtaking spot is completely free.
Alleppey (Alappuzha) — The Venice of the East02 / Place

Alleppey (Alappuzha) — The Venice of the East

Experience the tranquil houseboat sunrise on Vembanad Lake in Alleppey (Alappuzha) , Kerala’s longest lake spanning 96 km. Anchored overnight in the main lake channel during a serene January morning, pre-dawn at 5:50 AM reveals an unmatched stillness across flat, windless waters. By 6:15 AM, the sun rises over a 6 km expanse, illuminating the rich biodiversity of the Kerala backwaters —from resting cormorants to distant fishing canoes gliding past the banks. Known as the "city between the sea and the lake," Alleppey anchors a massive 900 km network of navigable waterways. This unique backwater ecosystem fuels local fishing, coir production, and the famous Kuttanad below-sea-level farming , making an early morning houseboat stay the ultimate highlight of any Kerala tourism itinerary.
Thekkady / Periyar — The Spice Forest Reserve03 / Place

Thekkady / Periyar — The Spice Forest Reserve

Embarking on the 8:00 AM Kerala Forest Department boat safari on Periyar Lake in Thekkady offers one of the finest wildlife viewing experiences in South India. Spanning 925 sq km across the Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts, Periyar National Park (originally established in 1895 as the Periyar Game Reserve) is one of India's oldest protected areas and a premier elephant reserve , home to approximately 900 wild elephants. During the 2-hour lake cruise, visitors can observe remarkable animal behaviour up close along the shoreline—such as a wild elephant herd drinking and mud-bathing just 40 meters from the boat. For naturalists and travellers alike, observing maternal elephant behaviour in this pristine sanctuary rivals top wildlife destinations like Ranthambore, making the Periyar elephant safari an indispensable highlight of any Kerala wildlife tour .

Fort Kochi — 500 Years of Colonial History in 2km

Witnessing the iconic Chinese fishing nets in Fort Kochi at 6:30 AM offers an authentic glimpse into centuries-old coastal tradition before the crowds arrive. Operated by a complex counterweight system using stones and concrete blocks, these massive 10-meter-high cantilevered nets require a team of 6 to 8 fishermen to haul in the morning tide—a working heritage preserved for over 600 years. Beyond its maritime charm, historical Fort Kochi serves as a living museum of colonial architecture; as India's first European settlement, it transitioned from Portuguese control (1503) to Dutch rule (1663) and British governance (1795). Packed within a compact 2 km radius, key attractions include St. Francis Church (the original burial site of Vasco da Gama), the Mattancherry Palace , and the historic 1568 Paradesi Synagogue in Jew Town, making an early morning visit to Fort Kochi Beach an essential cultural stop on any Kerala travel itinerary .
Wayanad — The Most Beautiful District in Kerala05 / Place

Wayanad — The Most Beautiful District in Kerala

Trekking to Chembra Peak (2,100m) , the highest point in Wayanad , offers one of the most rewarding high-altitude adventures in Kerala. Starting early at 6:00 AM from Meppadi, the 7 km round-trip trail climbs 900 meters through dense shola forests and rolling grasslands before reaching the famous heart-shaped lake (Hridayathadaka) , a natural crater lake that holds its distinctive shape year-round. From the summit, trekkers are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of coffee and spice plantations, misty valleys, and the distant Kabini reservoir. As Kerala’s northernmost highland district bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Wayanad is renowned for its rich tribal heritage, vibrant spice cultivations, and the bio-diverse Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve). Starting your Chembra Peak trek before sunrise ensures a peaceful experience above the cloud line long before morning day-trippers arrive.

Best Things to Do in Kerala

01

Chinese Fishing Nets at Sunrise — Fort Kochi, 6:30 am

The Fort Kochi Chinese fishing nets (cheena vala) at 6:30 am — before the tourist boats and the souvenir vendors arrive. The fishing families have operated these cantilevered counterweight nets for approximately 600 years. At 6:30am: the fishermen work the morning tide. By 9am: the same nets are a photographic backdrop. The distinction is the difference between history and tourism.

Insider tip
Walk from Fort Kochi town centre to the fishing net waterfront (10 minutes) — you will pass through the silent colonial streets of Fort Kochi at 6am, which is itself the finest time to see this neighbourhood. The combination of the empty colonial streets + the working fishing nets + the Fort Kochi sunrise is the finest free 90 minutes in Kerala. Must Do. Don't: Miss the sunrise by arriving at 9am.
02
Must do

Kolukkumalai Tea Estate — World's Highest Tea Plantation

The Kolukkumalai Tea Estate (7,900 feet / 2,408m above sea level) is reached by a 45-minute 4WD jeep ride from Suryanelli village (32km from Munnar on the Tamil Nadu border side). The estate — one of the few remaining orthodox tea factories using 1930s wooden machinery — produces a limited-quantity tea that is distinct from the commercial Munnar tea. The factory tour is ₹75. The views from the estate: looking into both Kerala and Tamil Nadu simultaneously, the tea rows curving over the hilltop, and the January mist in the valley below.

Insider tip
The shared jeep from Suryanelli has 8 seats — you can book the full jeep privately for ₹2,500–₹3,200 for a 2-hour round trip. For morning photography: depart Munnar by 5:30am for a 7am arrival at the estate in the best light. Must Do (Munnar visit). Don't: Skip Kolukkumalai in favour of the standard Munnar sightseeing circuit (Echo Point, Mattupetty Dam, Rose Garden) — these are fine but Kolukkumalai is the finest Munnar experience.
03
Must do

Nilgiri Tahr at Eravikulam National Park

The Nilgiri Tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) is found nowhere on Earth except the Western Ghats of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The Eravikulam National Park has the largest surviving population (approximately 900 animals). In January, the tahr graze at the park trail at close range — often 10–30 metres. Entry: ₹30. The park is open approximately November–January and closes February–April for calving season. Confirm the opening status at keralaforests.gov.in before planning your Munnar visit.

Insider tip
The January tahr are habituated to humans on the park trail — they approach rather than flee. Do not feed them (park rules, for their dietary health) and do not touch them. The mountain beyond the tahr grazing area (Rajamala Peak) is accessible via a separate trekking permit — speak to the park office if interested. Must Do (January Munnar). Don't: Visit after mid-February when the park closes for calving season.
04
Must do

Alleppey Houseboat Sunrise — Overnight Vembanad Lake

Book a mid-category or above houseboat on Vembanad Lake for the overnight backwater experience. The houseboat includes all meals (the lunch of karimeen pollichathu — pearl spot fish in banana leaf — and Kerala prawn curry is the finest single meal available in Kerala's backwater region). Depart Alleppey jetty at noon, anchor overnight in the main lake, and wake for the 6 am sunrise over the flat water. Book 3–6 weeks ahead for January.

Insider tip
The specific detail that separates a good houseboat experience from an extraordinary one: request anchoring in the main Vembanad Lake rather than the canal network overnight. The canal overnight is noisier (villages on both banks) and the dawn view is more restricted. The main lake overnight gives the full 360° flat-water sunrise with unobstructed horizon. Must Do. Don't: Book a budget houseboat that runs a diesel generator all night for AC — the generator noise eliminates the backwater silence.

Kerala Travel Tips

Money
  • Alleppey houseboat prices are highly negotiable off-peak (June–September) — the listed rate for a 1-night 1-bedroom AC houseboat is ₹8,000–12,000 during peak, but October–November moves to ₹5,000–7,000 for the same boat; book directly with houseboats at the jetty rather than through agencies.

  • Munnar's tea estate bungalows offer a far better price-to-experience ratio than Munnar town hotels — estate bungalows run by KDHP, Tata Tea, and Harrison Malayalam Tea are ₹3,000–5,000/night with full estate access vs. ₹5,000–8,000 for inferior town hotels.

Safety
  • Kerala's Andaman coast (Varkala, Kovalam) has serious rip currents — swim only at lifeguard-patrolled sections between the flag markers; the cliff-top beaches south of Varkala Cliff are unpatrolled and account for several annual drownings.

  • Elephant encounters in Kerala tourism — captive temple elephants (festival processions, sanctuary camps) have caused injuries and deaths; maintain distances specified by handlers and never approach from behind

  • Monsoon (June–September): landslides and fog on mountain roads. Check Kerala Highways advisories. January has no monsoon risk.

  • Houseboat safety: confirm life vest location on boarding. Don't swim in canals. Vembanad has specific safe swim points — ask captain.

Etiquette
  • Kerala's temple entry rules are specific and enforced — Guruvayur, Sabarimala, and Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple restrict entry to Hindus; non-Hindus are permitted at most temples but check specific rules at the temple website before visiting, particularly during festival periods.

  • Kathakali and Mohiniyattam performances are devotional art forms before they are entertainment — attend performances at Kerala Kalamandalam or Margi Trivandrum for the authentic context; hotel "cultural show" versions are significantly abbreviated

  • Houseboat: remove shoes before boarding. Deck is treated as indoor space — keep it clean (cook prepares food on board).

Scams and Pitfalls
  • Kochi spice market "factory price" selling — Fort Kochi's spice shops claim to sell directly from the plantation; the same cardamom, pepper, and vanilla sell at Ernakulam's wholesale market for 40–60% less.

  • Ayurvedic centre certification confusion — Kerala has hundreds of Ayurvedic clinics but only those certified by the Kerala Ayurveda Medical Association (KAMA) or Department of AYUSH are held to regulatory standards; "Ayurvedic spa" branding is unregulated.

  • Houseboat "honeymoon package" upselling — operators add flower decorations, candle-lit meals, and "special service" add-ons worth ₹800 for ₹3,000–4,000; request an itemised quote before confirming.

  • December 24–January 7: rates spike 40–80%. Avoid Dec 24–Jan 2 or book 4–6 months ahead for that window.

FAQs

Kerala Tours FAQ

Visas, costs, safety and the practical questions travellers ask us most.

Kerala
Kerala, India
Best Time to Visit Munnar 2026?
October–February. January is the finest single month — 8°C mornings, mist in the tea estates, Eravikulam National Park open for Nilgiri Tahr viewing, Top Station above the cloud line in the morning, and all trekking routes accessible. February: warming slightly, Eravikulam may close late February. June–September: monsoon — lush green but heavy rain on mountain roads.
Kerala Trip Cost for 10 Days — Budget to Mid-Range?
Budget (guesthouses, KSRTC bus, local mess): ₹15,000–₹25,000/person including transport. Mid-range (heritage homestays, private cab, mid-houseboat): ₹35,000–₹65,000/person. Flights add ₹5,000–₹14,000 return. Houseboat: ₹6,000–₹10,000 additional for 1 night standard. Ayurveda: ₹1,500–₹3,000 per session.
Alleppey Houseboat Cost 2026 — What Category Should I Book?
Standard 1-bedroom AC houseboat: ₹6,000–₹10,000/night (includes all meals — breakfast, lunch, dinner — and crew of 2). Premium 1-bedroom with upper deck: ₹10,000–₹18,000. Luxury 2-bedroom: ₹15,000–₹35,000. For January: book minimum 3–4 weeks ahead (peak season). Specify "silent houseboat" (battery AC, no generator noise) for the backwater silence experience.
Is Eravikulam National Park Open in January?
Yes — January is one of the prime months for Eravikulam NP (Nilgiri Tahr viewing). The park is typically open from November to late January/early February, then closes for the Nilgiri Tahr calving season (approximately February–April). Confirm the exact 2026 opening status at keralaforests.gov.in before finalising Munnar dates.
How to Reach Munnar from Kochi?
Kochi → Munnar: 130km, 4.5 hours by road via NH183. Private cab: ₹2,500–₹3,500. KSRTC bus from Ernakulam (KSRTC bus stand): ₹180–₹250, 5 hours. The road passes through Kothamangalam, Bhoothathankettu Dam, and the Cheeyappara Waterfalls (photo stop recommended) — the mountain section after Adimali has exceptional scenery.
Is January Good for Kerala Backwaters?
Yes — January is the finest month for Alleppey backwaters. The lake is calm (no monsoon), the morning stillness on Vembanad Lake is at its most complete, the fish (including karimeen) are in season, and the bird activity around the canals is at peak. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary (30 minutes from Alleppey) has migratory birds (including Siberian cranes) in January.
What Is the Kathakali Show Time in Fort Kochi?
Kerala Kathakali Centre, KB Jacob Road, Fort Kochi: makeup demonstration at 5pm (arrive to see the 2-hour process condensed to 45 minutes), performance at 6pm. Duration: 45 minutes. Cost: ₹350/person. Daily. Book at the centre or through your Fort Kochi hotel. The centre also offers Kalaripayattu (Kerala martial arts) demonstrations — check their schedule.
Kerala Mein Kahan Se Shuru Karein?
Fly into Kochi (COK) and start at Fort Kochi — the colonial heritage, Chinese fishing nets, and Kathakali are the correct cultural introduction to Kerala before moving to the natural landscapes (Munnar, Wayanad, Thekkady, Alleppey). End the circuit in Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) or Varkala and fly out. This north-to-south or south-to-north one-way routing avoids all backtracking.
