About Manali

Manali, your way.
With time for what matters.

Manali is the gateway to the high Himalayas — 2,050m above sea level, flanked by the Beas River and pine forests, with Rohtang Pass connecting it to the cold deserts of Lahaul-Spiti. I have been here three times and returned with a different understanding each time: June 2022 showed me snow at eye level and traffic I was unprepared for; October 2023 delivered a golden valley and a world-record tunnel into Lahaul; February 2025 gave me a snow-covered town, quiet streets, and the mountains closer than any photograph suggests.

Key Highlights

Is Manali Worth Visiting in 2026?

Yes — but pick your season with intention. June means snow at Rohtang and crowds on the highway. October means golden valleys, manageable traffic, and the Atal Tunnel running smoothly to Sissu. February means the town under snow, Hadimba Temple in three feet of white, and skiing at Solang with barely anyone watching. The Rohtang Permit (₹550/vehicle) is the only formality — and this guide tells you exactly how to get it without the two-hour queue.

Why visit

Why Visit Manali & Rohtang Pass

Snow access without trekking certification. A world-record tunnel into a completely different landscape in 10 minutes. Adventure sports for beginners and experienced travellers equally. A valley that changes personality completely between seasons. It is among India's most affordable complete mountain experiences.

The first time I went to Manali — June 2022, off an overnight bus at 6 am — I understood the Rohtang queue before I understood anything else about the place. We were in a line of vehicles that took 90 minutes to move 3 kilometres, and the whole time I was watching the mountain grow taller ahead. By the time we reached the snowline and everyone piled out, I had forgotten about the queue entirely. That is what Rohtang does — it absorbs the inconvenience of getting there. October 2023 was the opposite: the Atal Tunnel made Lahaul feel effortless, and Sissu's turquoise glacier lake felt like discovering something the world had not yet publicised. February 2025 was quieter — snowfall in the town, footprints on Mall Road, and eleven people at Hadimba Temple. All three Manalias are real. All three are worth the trip.

Rohtang Pass — The Reason People Come01 / Place

Rohtang Pass — The Reason People Come

I have crossed Rohtang from both sides — upward in June 2022, downward in October 2023. The June crossing: snow-covered summit, the Lahaul Valley appearing like a scene change in a film. The October crossing: quieter, visibility sharper, 60km visible across the Lahaul plateau. Both are worth it. But go early, go on a clear day, and never on a Tuesday. Rohtang connects the green Kullu Valley (1,200m) with the arid Lahaul Valley (2,800m) — two completely different climate zones divided by a single mountain pass. At 3,978m, the summit is above the treeline, covered in snow most of the year, and visible from a good distance on approach.
Solang Valley — Adventure Without the Permit02 / Place

Solang Valley — Adventure Without the Permit

Paragliding at Solang in June 2022 — the instructor told me to run, and I ran off the edge before I had decided I was ready. The valley dropped away below, the mountains came into view, and 12 minutes later I was back on the ground, asking about a second flight. It was not expensive for 12 minutes. Solang Valley (2,480m, 14km from Manali) is the adventure hub — a wide open bowl for skiing in winter, paragliding and zorbing in summer, cable car year-round. India's most accessible beginner ski destination December–February.
Hadimba Devi Temple — 1553 AD03 / Place

Hadimba Devi Temple — 1553 AD

Hadimba Temple in the snow. Eleven people, including the priest. Carved wooden doors, 500 years old. Ancient deodar cedar forest. A silence that feels deliberate. I have been here three times across three seasons — the February visit in the snow was the finest. A 27-metre pagoda temple built in 1553 by Maharaja Bahadur Singh — dedicated to Hadimba (Hidimbi) from the Mahabharata. One of the finest examples of Himachali temple woodcarving. 10-minute walk from Manali town centre in a cedar forest. The entrance vendor pressure can obscure what is actually a 470-year-old structure. Walk past the stalls, enter the cedar forest, and take 15 quiet minutes before engaging with anything commercial.
Old Manali & Manu Temple04 / Place

Old Manali & Manu Temple

Old Manali is 20 minutes uphill from the main town — apple orchards, wood-frame guesthouses, riverside cafés, the sound of the Manalsu stream below. In October 2023, I spent three evenings in Old Manali without entering the main town. Café 1947's apple pie. The Lazy Dog Lounge's valley view terrace. Genuinely excellent, genuinely affordable. The original Himachali village above modern Manali. Manu Temple (a 500-year-old stone temple with valley views) is at the top. Cafés along the Manalsu River are the best casual dining spaces in Himachal Pradesh. Stay away from riverbank seating during heavy rain.
Sissu & Atal Tunnel Route — The New Day Trip05 / Place

Sissu & Atal Tunnel Route — The New Day Trip

Sissu Lake — turquoise water, white peaks reflected on the surface, approximately 12 other people. The drive to Sissu from the Atal Tunnel is 10 minutes. Then a completely different world: colder, drier, more dramatic. This is what Lahaul looks like. It looks like nothing else in India. Sissu (3,100m) is a small Lahaul Valley village 10 minutes from the tunnel exit — Sissu Lake, seasonal Sissu waterfall, wide open plateau. From Sissu the road continues to Keylong (1 hour, Lahaul district headquarters) and eventually toward Leh. Visitors who rush from Manali to Sissu without acclimatisation can experience mild altitude discomfort. If combining Sissu with Rohtang in one day, spend at least 2 nights in Manali first.

Things to do

Top Things to Do in Manali & Rohtang Pass

01
Must do

Rohtang Pass — Leave at 6:30 AM

Rohtang at 8:30 AM in the morning window — snow, Lahaul Valley dropping away on the other side, and perhaps 20 minutes before the tourist crowd peaks. The logistics game (early permit, early departure) is what determines whether this experience is extraordinary or exhausting. In June 2022, I stood at the summit for 20 minutes before a single tourist walked into my field of view. That window was why the trip was worth every queue and permit hassle.

Insider tip

Carry your own lunch — parathas and thermos tea from a Manali dhaba. The food stalls at Rohtang are overpriced and limited. Don't: Go on Tuesday.

02
Must do

Paragliding in Solang Valley

Duration: 10–15 min flight. The Solang launch point is a short hike up the slope. The instructor checks the harness, gives a 90-second briefing, and tells you to run. The valley drops away as the wing catches air. The flight shows you Manali from 600–800 metres above it.

Insider tip
Check HPADA license of operator and pilot before paying. A legitimate operator shows certification without being asked twice. Don't: Book through your hotel (20–30% markup above valley rate).
03
Must do

Atal Tunnel + Sissu Day Trip

Ten minutes through the tunnel, and the landscape changes completely. Sissu Lake is turquoise, still, surrounded by white peaks. In October 2023: twelve people at Sissu Lake. Compare this with Rohtang's 1,200-vehicle daily cap. The Atal Tunnel to Sissu is the best-value, least-crowded, no-permit Manali day trip available.

Insider tip
Continue to Keylong (1 hour further) for a proper Himachali dhaba lunch. Keylong feels genuinely remote — the food is local, the prices are local, and the landscape is the Himalayan cold desert. Don't: Rush through without stopping at Sissu.
04
Must do

Hadimba Temple at 7:30 AM

The Hadimba Temple is always there. The experience depends entirely on timing. At 7:30 AM — before tourist groups arrive — the cedar forest is quiet, the light through the trees is angled, and the 500-year-old carved doors are visible without a crowd. This temple at 7:30 AM is a different place from the same temple at 11 AM.

Insider tip
The Dhungiri Van Vihar trail leads to a viewpoint above the temple roofline — 5-minute uphill walk from the main gate, not clearly marked, best photography frame in Manali. Don't: Write it off as a 'tourist trap' based on entrance vendors.

9 ways to travel

Delhi → Manali (Volvo AC Bus)

HRTC/private Volvo AC bus. Duration: 12–14 hours (overnight). Most popular. Departs ISBT Kashmere Gate. Book at hrtchp.com or RedBus. After three trips, I take the Volvo bus every time. The Beas Valley road journey — entering Kullu, the river beside the highway, the mountains appearing — is part of the experience. Flights are faster, but weather cancellations cost half a day of uncertainty.

Delhi → Manali (Private Cab)

Duration: 12–14 hours. Groups of 4–5: practical. Innova or similar. Prices fluctuate due to seasonal demand.

Chandigarh → Manali (Bus / Taxi)

Duration: 8–9 hours. Good if connecting from Chandigarh. Prices fluctuate due to seasonal demand

Delhi → Bhuntar (Flight)

Duration: 1 hour + 1.5 hrs taxi. Frequent weather cancellations. Always have a bus backup. Prices fluctuate due to seasonal demand

What is worth it,
and what to avoid.

Genuinely worth it
  • Rohtang Pass at 8:30 AM
The only road-accessible pass showing two completely different climate zones. Morning timing is the difference between extraordinary and exhausting.
  • Atal Tunnel → Sissu
World record tunnel + a turquoise glacial lake + almost no crowds. Best value, least crowded, no-permit Manali day trip.
  • Paragliding at Solang
Kullu Valley from 800 metres. Best aerial view of Manali without a helicopter.
  • Vashisht Hot Spring (Free)
Natural sulphur spring, ancient temple, genuinely hot water, genuinely free. The finest 30 minutes of my February 2025 trip.
