About Hongkong

Hongkong, your way.
With time for what matters.

Hong Kong consists of three geographic areas: Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, and the New Territories and Outlying Islands. It was a British colony from 1842 to 1997, now an SAR with its own laws, currency, customs, and immigration policy separate from mainland China. Hong Kong Island (Victoria Peak sunrise, Man Mo Temple, Hollywood Road, PMQ), Kowloon (Mong Kok pre-CNY flower markets, Temple Street Night Market, TST waterfront, Chi Lin Nunnery), Lantau (Ngong Ping 360, Tian Tan Big Buddha, Tai O), and CNY experiences (Harbour fireworks Feb 18, Wong Tai Sin Eve, Nathan Road lion dances).

Key Highlights

Is Hong Kong Worth Visiting in 2026?

Hong Kong is the most densely layered city in the world — you are simultaneously in a Chinese temple (the Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road, 1847, the incense spirals hanging from the ceiling in the oldest temple on Hong Kong Island), in a British colonial building (the 1881 Heritage, the former Marine Police Headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui), in the most efficient modern metro system in Asia (the MTR, 98.8% on-time rate), and looking at one of the most dramatic urban skylines on Earth (the Victoria Harbour, the 9,000 buildings of Hong Kong Island visible from the Kowloon waterfront). I visited in February 2026, during the Chinese New Year celebrations — the Year of the Horse, the new year beginning on February 17 — and found Hong Kong at its most specific: the Victoria Harbour fireworks on CNY Night (February 18), the flower markets of Mong Kok in the days before the new year, the lion dances on Nathan Road, and the Wong Tai Sin Temple at 11pm on CNY Eve with 30,000 people simultaneously burning incense to welcome the Year of the Horse.

Why visit

Why visit Hongkong.

Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely vertical cities — 7.5 million people in 1,106 sq km, with 70% remaining as countryside, parks, and beaches. Victoria Harbour at night, viewed from Tsim Sha Tsui or the Peak, is one of the most cinematic city panoramas anywhere. Dim sum yum cha — the trolley-cart breakfast tradition — is a daily ritual, not a tourist attraction. The MTR is the most efficient urban transit system globally. Outlying islands (Lantau, Cheung Chau, Lamma) offer hiking trails and fishing villages 40 minutes from downtown. Cantonese food — roast goose, wonton noodle soup, egg tarts — is the finest regional Chinese cuisine. Visa-free for Indians (14 days). Direct flights from Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai. The Dragon's Back trail on Hong Kong Island offers a complete panorama of the Sai Kung peninsula, 45 minutes from Central — a reminder that 70% of Hong Kong's territory is country park, accessible to anyone. Best time: October–March.

Victoria Peak Sunrise — Bus 15C at 5:45am

Bus 15C from Star Ferry pier (Central) at 5:45 am (first departure). Peak by 6:20 am — harbour in pre-dawn. February sunrise approximately 6:50 am. At 7:15 am, the sun clears the eastern hills, and the harbour simultaneously goes golden. Peak Tram (funicular, most-photographed approach) begins ~7 am — the first tram arrives in post-dawn light, with hundreds already on Sky Terrace. Bus 15C at 6:20 am arrives at the harbour in pre-dawn light, with 5 people at the viewpoint.

CNY Fireworks — TST Waterfront

Arrive at Avenue of Stars (TST waterfront railing, Kowloon side) by 7:30pm. Fireworks at 9pm sharp (23 minutes). Free. The best specific position: stretch between Hong Kong Cultural Centre and New World Centre hotel — unobstructed harbour view, full firework display framed by HK Island skyline. Arrive by 7pm if wanting railing position. Symphony of Lights at 8pm runs as warm-up. At 9pm: the fireworks above the harbour, reflections below in the water, HK Island skyline visible through the firework smoke as display ends.
Insider tip

Star Ferry to Central after (post-fireworks crossing: harbour with firework smoke still visible) · CNY night streets: Nathan Road lion dances + red lanterns visible until midnight.

03
Must do

Pre-CNY Flower Market — Mong Kok,Feb 13-16

MTR to Mong Kok station (exit A2). Flower Market Road is a 5-minute walk north. The market is at maximum density February 13-16 (4 days immediately before CNY Feb 17). The specific flowers: narcissus (white-yellow, timed to bloom on CNY Day, bulbs in shallow water bowls), kumquat tree golden citrus in a decorative ceramic pot — small golden fruits representing money HKD 200+), plum blossom branches, peach blossom (love + good fortune for the new year). The fragrance: narcissus + plum blossom + winter cold air = most specifically HK CNY sensory experience.

Insider tip
Flower Market Road 10am (Feb 13-16) · Pre-CNY fragrance + family shopping observation · Ladies' Market (Tung Choi Street, 500m south) 12pm · Temple Street Night Market 4pm (opens at 4pm — fortune tellers southern section, Cantonese opera northern section) · Mong Kok dinner: any roast goose restaurant on Dundas Street (HK roast goose + white rice, HKD 80-120).
04
Must do

Wong Tai Sin Temple CNY Eve Midnight — February 16

MTR to Wong Tai Sin station (exit B2, temple directly above). CNY Eve crowd builds from 10pm — arrive by 10:30pm for reasonable position. The most densely populated single moment in HK religious calendar: 25,000-30,000 simultaneously burning incense at moment new year begins. Best position: near Main Yuk Tung Hall (primary prayer hall, Wong Tai Sin deity shrine) — smoke thickest, collective prayer most intense. At exactly midnight: temple bell, firecrackers outside, transition to new year. Post-midnight MTR runs through the night on CNY Eve.
Insider tip
Wong Tai Sin Temple 10:30pm (CNY Eve Feb 16) · Main courtyard position by 11pm · CNY midnight moment · Return MTR (24-hour service on CNY Eve) · Nathan Road 1am: lion dances + red lanterns still operating until 2am on CNY night. Bring Octopus Card for the late-night MTR return.

Itineraries for Hong Kong"

Hong Kong Quick — 4 Days (City + CNY)
4 days

Hong Kong Quick — 4 Days (City + CNY)

  1. Day 1
HKIA → Kowloon hotel · TST waterfront
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) arrival on Lantau. Airport Express to Kowloon Station (21 min, HKD 115). Buy Octopus Card at airport MTR station immediately (HKD 150 load + HKD 50 deposit). Check into TST hotel. Avenue of Stars evening walk. Star Ferry 7:45pm TST → Central crossing (HKD 3.20 lower deck). Symphony of Lights 8pm from waterfront (13-minute free laser show across HK Island skyline). Return Star Ferry to TST.
    Advice
Octopus Card is the single most essential HK purchase — covers MTR + bus + tram + Star Ferry + 7-Eleven + many restaurants. Without it: every transaction requires exact change. Return at any MTR customer service desk for the HKD 50 deposit refund on departure day.
  2. Day 2
Bus 15C Central → Peak → MTR Mong Kok
Bus 15C from Star Ferry pier Central at 5:45am (first departure). Peak 6:20am pre-dawn. Sunrise sequence 6:50am. Peak Tram descent 8am. Central cha chaan teng breakfast (HK milk tea + pineapple bun with butter). MTR to Mong Kok. Flower Market Road 10am (pre-CNY peak Feb 13-16 — narcissus + kumquat + plum blossom fragrance, the most specifically CNY sensory experience). Ladies' Market 12pm. Lunch + rest. Temple Street Night Market 4pm-late.
    Advice
The Peak Tram during CNY week (Feb 17-23, 2026) has 1.5-2 hour queues at the lower terminus. Book online at thepeak.com.hk in advance OR take bus 15C from Star Ferry pier (no queue, different approach angle, same destination at slightly lower terminus point). Bus 15C at 5:45am gives Peak in pre-dawn with 5 visitors.
  3. Day 3
Sheung Wan morning → Diamond Hill afternoon → Wong Tai Sin midnight
Man Mo Temple 9am Sheung Wan (oldest HK Island temple, 1847, incense coil ceiling). Hollywood Road antique walk. PMQ creative hub 11am. Diamond Hill MTR afternoon: Nan Lian Garden + Chi Lin Nunnery (Tang Dynasty wooden complex, free). Hotel rest 4pm. Wong Tai Sin Temple arrival 10:30pm (CNY Eve crowd builds from 10pm — 30,000 by midnight). Position near Yuk Tung Hall by 11pm. CNY midnight moment Feb 17 begins. Post-midnight MTR (24-hour CNY Eve service).
    Advice
The Wong Tai Sin Temple at midnight on CNY Eve is the most densely populated single moment in the HK religious calendar. Arriving at 11:30pm gives no position near the main hall. Arrive by 10:30pm for a position near the Yuk Tung Hall. The experience is collective prayer with 25,000+ people — any position in the forecourt gives the experience.
  4. Day 4
Sha Tin (Che Kung Temple) → TST waterfront → Fireworks 9pm
CNY Day 1 (Feb 17) morning: Che Kung Temple Sha Tin (CNY Day 1 traditional visit destination, the windmill turning for prosperity tradition). Return Kowloon afternoon. Hotel rest. CNY Day 2 evening (Feb 18): TST waterfront arrival 7pm (positioning for 9pm fireworks). Symphony of Lights 8pm warm-up. CNY Harbour Fireworks 9pm-9:23pm. Post-fireworks: Star Ferry to Central, walk Lan Kwai Fong, or return to TST hotel.
    Advice
CNY Day 1 (Feb 17, 2026) is a public holiday — many local restaurants and markets closed. Major tourist attractions (Peak, Big Buddha, museums) remain open. Plan: tourist sites in the morning, CNY street celebrations (Nathan Road lion dances, temple visits, red envelope distributions) in afternoon-evening. Eat large dinner CNY Eve (Feb 16) at a local restaurant before closures.

4 ways to travel

International Flight to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)

HKIA is on Lantau Island, 35km from Central. Delhi → Hong Kong: Cathay Pacific (direct, 5 hours), Air India (direct), Indigo (via hub). Return economy: ₹30,000–₩75,000. Mumbai → Hong Kong: same airlines, 5 hours direct, ₹28,000–₩70,000 return. Bangalore/Chennai → Hong Kong: Cathay Pacific (direct, 5.5 hours), Singapore Airlines (via SIN). Book 4-6 weeks ahead for February CNY week — prices rise significantly closer to CNY.

Airport Express (HKIA to Central/Kowloon)

Airport Express dedicated rail (HKD 115 ≈ ₹1,265 to Central, HKD 105 to Kowloon Station): 24 minutes to Hong Kong Station (Central, HK Island), 21 minutes to Kowloon Station. Departs HKIA every 10-12 minutes. The fastest airport transfer in Hong Kong — significantly faster than any taxi in HK traffic. Worth every rupee. Free shuttle bus from Hong Kong/Kowloon stations to major hotels included with Airport Express ticket.

MTR (Mass Transit Railway)

The most efficient metro system in Asia (98.8% on-time rate, October 2025). Hong Kong Travel Tips

Visa & Documentation
Visa-free 14 days for Indians — no advance application, no fee. Valid passport + return ticket + accommodation confirmation sufficient at HKIA. Important: separate from mainland China immigration (a China visa does NOT cover Hong Kong, and vice versa). The Hong Kong SAR has its own independent immigration system with separate passport control. Macau is also separate from Hong Kong — Indian passport gets 30-day visa-free entry to Macau separately.
Money
  • The Octopus Card (stored-value transit card, HKD 150 deposit + initial load) works on MTR, buses, ferries, trams, and can pay at 7-Eleven, McDonald's, and many shops — absolutely essential for any Hong Kong stay.

  • Temple Street Night Market prices are negotiable by 30–50% — start at half the asking price; the vendor's second offer is usually the realistic market rate.

Safety
  • Hong Kong's current security law (NSL, 2020) is broad and has been applied to social media posts, possession of protest materials, and public speech critical of the PRC government — be mindful of social media content before and during your visit.

  • Typhoon season (June–November) can result in rapid airport closures and public transport shutdowns — check the Hong Kong Observatory (hko.gov.hk) signal numbers; Signal 8+ means all public transport stops.

Etiquette
  • Give up your MTR priority seat to elderly, pregnant, or disabled passengers — this is socially enforced (phone screens are usually put down) and ignoring a person in need of a priority seat draws visible social disapproval.

  • Business cards are given and received with both hands and a slight bow — examining the card briefly before pocketing it is respectful; putting it directly in your wallet without looking is not.

Scams & Pitfalls
  • Electronics shops in Mong Kok and Nathan Road switch confirmed prices once you're seated in the shop — agree everything in writing, including accessories and warranty, before the "deal" is closed; leaving the shop before purchase is always an option.

  • Camera shops along Sham Shui Po quote impossibly low prices on camera bodies but add mandatory accessories (batteries, cases, SD cards) at inflated prices that total 2–3× the original interest — get a full final price before agreeing.

  • "Rooftop bar" invitations from English-speaking strangers near Lan Kwai Fong or Jordan — friendly invitation leads to a bar where your group is given drinks without ordering and then presented with a multi-thousand HKD bill.

What is worth it,
and what to avoid.

Last reviewed 2026-06-05.

Genuinely worth it
  • Victoria Harbour CNY Fireworks Feb 18 (Free). The largest annual fireworks display in Asia, 23 minutes, from the TST waterfront. Free. The most specifically Hong Kong single annual event.
  • Wong Tai Sin Temple CNY Eve midnight (Free). 25,000 people, the new year beginning in incense smoke. The collective Hong Kong CNY prayer. The most specifically culturally dense single moment in Hong Kong.
  • Star Ferry lower deck. The Victoria Harbour crossing at water level, the full skyline approaching, the salt air. The most specific Hong Kong experience at the lowest cost. ₹35. Non-negotiable.
  • Ngong Ping 360 crystal cabin. The glass floor gondola with the Lantau coast below. The most dramatically positioned cable car in Hong Kong. The Big Buddha at the end.

Hong Kong FAQ

Visas, costs, safety and the practical questions travellers ask us most.

Hongkong
Hongkong, Hong Kong SAR, China
Hong Kong Visa for Indians — Is It Really Free?
Yes — Indian passport holders get a 14-day visa-free stay in Hong Kong at no cost and without advance application. Valid Indian passport (6 months) + return ticket + accommodation confirmation = entry stamp at HKIA. Important: this is separate from mainland China — a China visa does not cover Hong Kong, and vice versa. Hong Kong has its own independent immigration system as a Special Administrative Region. If visiting both mainland China and Hong Kong: you need both a China visa (for the mainland) AND the Hong Kong visa-free entry (for Hong Kong).
Hong Kong CNY 2026 — When Are the Fireworks?
Chinese New Year 2026 is February 17 (Year of the Horse). Victoria Harbour fireworks: CNY Day 2 (February 18, 2026) at 9pm. Viewing: Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront (Avenue of Stars), free, arrive by 7:30pm. Duration: approximately 23 minutes — the largest annual fireworks display in Asia. The best specific position: stretch between Hong Kong Cultural Centre and New World Centre hotel — unobstructed harbour view, full firework display framed by Hong Kong Island skyline.
Hong Kong Trip Cost from India 2026 — 5 Days?
Budget: ₹70,000–₩1,00,000/person (flights included). Mid-range: ₹1,20,000–₩1,80,000. Flights Delhi/Mumbai → Hong Kong return: ₹30,000–₩75,000. Cathay Pacific operates the most direct India-HK connections (5-hour direct flight). Daily ground: Budget ₹5,500–₩11,000 · Mid ₹14,000–₩27,000. CNY week: hotel prices 20-30% higher than non-CNY February — book 2-3 months ahead.
What is the Best Time to Visit Victoria Peak?
Sunrise (bus 15C at 5:45am from Star Ferry pier, the first departure): the harbour in the pre-dawn transitioning to golden, 5 people on the viewpoint vs 1,200 at 10am. February: the clearest winter air of the year. The Peak Tram during CNY week (Feb 17-23, 2026) has 1.5-2 hour queues at lower terminus — book Peak Tram in advance at thepeak.com.hk, or take bus 15C (no queue, same destination, different approach angle).
Is the Big Buddha Worth the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car?
Yes, together they're essential. The cable car (crystal cabin glass floor, HKD 320 return ≈ ₹3,520) gives the Lantau coast from above. The Big Buddha (268 steps, 34m high, the face at close range from the platform) is the most dramatically proportioned religious monument in Hong Kong. Combine with Tai O fishing village (30 min by bus from Ngong Ping) for the complete Lantau experience — the stilt houses, dried seafood stalls, and pink dolphin boat trip (HKD 60). Book crystal cabin at np360.com.hk 1-2 days ahead.
India to Hong Kong Flight Cost 2026?
Return economy: ₹30,000–₩75,000. Cathay Pacific (direct, most frequent), Air India (direct), Indigo (via hub). Delhi: 5 hours direct. Mumbai: 5 hours direct. Bangalore/Chennai: 5.5 hours direct. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for February CNY week — prices rise significantly closer to CNY. Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) Airport Express to Central (24 min, HKD 115 ≈ ₹1,265) is the fastest airport transfer.
Is Hong Kong Good for Vegetarian Indian Tourists?
Challenging in traditional Cantonese restaurants (cuisine is heavily meat-based). Options: dim sum (many vegetarian options — steamed vegetable dumplings, turnip cake, lotus paste buns), Po Lin Monastery vegetarian restaurant on Lantau (specifically vegetarian Cantonese menu), and Indian restaurants in Tsim Sha Tsui (Chungking Mansions has multiple authentic Indian restaurants run by the South Asian diaspora) and Wan Chai. Avoid CNY Day 1-2 (Feb 17-18) for restaurant browsing — many local restaurants closed, hotel restaurants safer.
Hong Kong Mein Kitne Din Chahiye?
4 days: City essentials + CNY fireworks (minimum for the CNY Hong Kong experience). 6 days: Sarthak's complete circuit with Lantau + pre-CNY markets + Wong Tai Sin midnight + CNY Day 1 lion dances + CNY Day 2 fireworks. 10 days: complete with Macau day trip + Cheung Chau outlying island + Sham Shui Po local + outlying islands depth. Minimum meaningful Hong Kong: 4 days. Recommended Hong Kong for CNY: 6 days (Sarthak's circuit covering CNY Eve + Day 1 + Day 2 fireworks).
