Canada, your way.
With time for what matters.
Canada is the world's second-largest country by area (9.98 million sq km), running 5,500km from east to west and 4,600km from north to south — a country that contains the Rocky Mountains, the French-language culture of Quebec, the British Columbian rainforest, the Great Lakes, 20% of the world's freshwater, and one of the most culturally diverse cities on Earth in Toronto.
Is Canada Worth Visiting in 2026?

Why Visit Canada
Canada has the world's longest coastline, the most lakes of any country, and Rocky Mountain scenery in Alberta that is among the most photographed landscapes in the world. Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are glacial turquoise — the colour from glacial rock flour suspended in meltwater. Banff National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. The Icefields Parkway, a 230km drive between Banff and Jasper, passes 100+ glaciers, 6 icefields, and more wildlife than most African safaris. Niagara Falls handles 168,000 m³ of water per minute. Churchill in Manitoba offers both polar bears (October) and Northern Lights (February–March). ETA required for Indians (online, CAD 7). The Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia has the world's highest tidal range — 17m between high and low tide — exposing seafloor and sea caves twice daily that are completely submerged six hours later. Best time: June–September for most regions.

Top 8 Places to Visit in Canada
01 / PlaceNiagara Falls — The Power You Cannot Photograph
I will describe the Maid of the Mist accurately: you board a blue-poncho-covered boat at the dock below the American Falls. The boat moves toward Bridal Veil Falls (the small fall), then turns to face Horseshoe Falls directly. The boat moves as close as it can — perhaps 15 metres from the base. At that distance, the sound is not sound — it is a physical pressure. The spray reaches the boat before you see the fall properly. In May with spring snowmelt, Horseshoe Falls was pushing 168,000 cubic metres of water per minute over the lip. The mist cloud from the base of the falls was 100 metres high. The poncho was saturated in 90 seconds. I stood there for 20 minutes completely soaked and thought: I have designed 40 Niagara Falls itineraries and I described none of them accurately. Niagara Falls is formed at the edge of the Niagara Escarpment where the Niagara River drops from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario — three falls: Horseshoe Falls (the Canadian falls, 670m wide, 57m high), American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. The Canadian side has the better view — from Queen Victoria Park (free), the Horseshoe Falls are framed directly ahead. Cost: Maid of the Mist boat (Canadian side): CAD 28 (≈ ₹1,960) · Journey Behind the Falls: CAD 23 · Niagara Falls State Park (US side): Free · Niagara SkyWheel: CAD 15 · GO Train Toronto → Niagara Falls: CAD 17 one way. Mistake to Avoid: The Niagara Falls view from the Canadian side is free — Queen Victoria Park looking at Horseshoe Falls costs nothing. Paid attractions add the immersive experience, not the view.
02 / PlaceBanff National Park — Canada's Most Extraordinary National Park
Lake Louise at 6 am (before the shuttle buses from Banff) — 15 visitors vs the 800 at 9 am, the Victoria Glacier at the far end, and the Chateau Lake Louise on the shore. The Icefields Parkway (the Athabasca Glacier accessible by Ice Explorer) and Moraine Lake (reservation required at parks.canada.ca — the most specifically turquoise glacial lake in Canada).
03 / PlaceVancouver — The Pacific Gateway
Stanley Park at 6 am (the 8.8km seawall cycle with the Pacific Ocean, the Vancouver skyline, the North Shore mountains, and Lions Gate Bridge simultaneously visible) and the Granville Island Market at 9 am (the local BC produce at its freshest). The most liveable Canadian city at its most specifically itself.
04 / PlaceQuebec City — Europe in North America
The European Canada Vieux-Québec (the UNESCO walled city — the Château Frontenac, the 4.6km city wall, the Dufferin Terrace). The Quebec Winter Carnival (February — the world's largest winter festival, the ice palace, the night parades, the canoe race across the semi-frozen St. Lawrence). The most specifically French-Canadian city in North America.
05 / PlaceMontreal — Canada's Food Capital
The Bilingual City The Vieux-Montréal (the most completely preserved 17th-18th century North American city quarter — the Notre-Dame Basilica with the most ornately decorated single neo-Gothic interior in North America), Mont Royal (the 235m park at the city centre, Olmsted's most accessible single work outside New York), and the Mile End neighbourhood (the most specifically creative and the most specifically Montréal single neighbourhood in terms of food and culture).Lake Louise at 6 am (before the shuttle buses from Banff) — 15 visitors vs the 800 at 9 am, the Victoria Glacier at the far end, and the Chateau Lake Louise on the shore. The Icefields Parkway (the Athabasca Glacier accessible by Ice Explorer) and Moraine Lake (reservation required at parks.canada.ca — the most specifically turquoise glacial lake in Canada).

The Rideau Canal in Ottawa during the Tulip Festival. Commissioner's Park (west bank of Dows Lake) has 300,000 tulips in formal beds — the world's most concentrated single-site tulip planting, open free to anyone walking the Rideau Canal parkway. I walked the path on a Wednesday morning at 8 am in May. The tulips were at peak — the reds and yellows and purples extending in long rows parallel to the water. Cycling families, dog walkers, seniors, school groups. This is Ottawa's most specifically Ottawa experience: a formal European-scale display of tulips beside a canal that freezes to become the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink in winter (8km, UNESCO World Heritage). Free on a weekday morning. Ottawa (1 million people) is Canada's capital city — Parliament Hill (the Centre Block, including the Peace Tower and House of Commons — free entry, guided tours available), the Byward Market (Ottawa's public market, best Beavertails pastry in Canada at the original Byward Market location), the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of History across the river in Gatineau, and the Rideau Canal.
The Icefields Parkway at 7:30 am, driving north. The highway leaves the Banff townsite, passes the Lake Louise junction (Lake Louise is 45km north of the townsite — a reminder that Banff is large), and the landscape begins to change. The road runs through a valley with the Rockies on both sides — these are not gentle hills but hard, vertical mountain faces with glaciers visible between the peaks. The Crowfoot Glacier viewpoint (approximately 1 hour north of Banff townsite): the glacier shape is unmistakably that of a crow's foot. Bow Lake (5 minutes further): turquoise glacial lake with the Bow Glacier at the far end. Peyto Lake overlook at Bow Summit (90 minutes north of Banff): the wolf-head lake shape, the Waputik Range behind, every peak snow-covered in May.
Mountain Resort The most internationally renowned mountain resort in Canada (the Whistler and Blackcomb mountains giving the largest combined ski area in North America at 8,171 acres), the Peak 2 Peak Gondola (the 4.4 km span between the two mountain summits — the longest free-span lift in the world), and the Whistler village (the most specifically purpose-designed car-free mountain village in Canada).

Maid of the Mist — Below Horseshoe Falls
The Maid of the Mist is a boat tour departing from the base of the American and Canadian falls at Niagara — the Canadian operation (Hornblower Niagara Cruises, now rebranded as Niagara City Cruises) departs from the Niagara Parks observation dock below the Skylon Tower. The boat moves directly into the mist cloud of Horseshoe Falls. At May spring flow: the mist cloud reaches 30+ metres above the falls lip, and the boat cannot approach within 15 metres of the base. The poncho (provided) is sufficient for your face — nothing is sufficient for your clothes. Budget 30 minutes on the boat and 20 minutes drying your jacket afterwards.
Insider tip
Lake Louise at 7 am — No Queue, Full Colour
Lake Louise in Banff National Park is turquoise, real, and exactly as beautiful as every photograph. But the photographs don't show the 400 people typically in front of the viewing area at 10 am in July. At 7 am in May, with 40 people — the lake at its calmest (wind rises after 9 am), the Victoria Glacier reflecting in the surface, and the light from the east hitting the Fairview Mountain directly — this is the definitive Banff experience. The walk from the Château Lake Louise hotel parking lot to the lakeshore: 5 minutes. The experience: 45 minutes minimum.
Insider tip
Lake Louise teahouse hike (Plain of Six Glaciers trail, 14km round trip, 3–4 hours) is the finest single-day hike in Banff — the trail follows the lake's north shore, climbs through alpine meadow, and ends at a teahouse with a view of 6 glaciers simultaneously. In May: check trail conditions at parks.canada.ca before attempting — snow may still be on the upper section.
Icefields Parkway — Drive the Entire 232 km
The Icefields Parkway requires at least one full day (7 am departure from Banff, arrive in Jasper at 4 pm with stops). The key stop hierarchy: (1) Peyto Lake overlook at Bow Summit — 45 minutes minimum, the finest single viewpoint; (2) Athabasca Glacier / Columbia Icefield — Ice Explorer tour CAD 107 or free glacier viewpoint from the road; (3) Glacier Skywalk — CAD 37, glass platform 280m above Sunwapta Valley; (4) Athabasca Falls — 20 minutes; (5) Sunwapta Falls — 10 minutes. Everything else on the drive is visible from the car window and worth stopping for when the light is right.
Insider tip
Ottawa Canadian Tulip Festival
Commissioner's Park on the Rideau Canal (Dows Lake) has 300,000 tulips in formal beds during the festival (mid-May, approximately 10 days). Walk the 7km Rideau Canal Pathway from Commissioner's Park to Parliament Hill for the full tulip experience. Add the Festival at Major's Hill Park (Parliament Hill area) — also free for the grounds. The festival has paid pavilions for special shows and food events — these are optional. The tulips themselves are public and free.
Insider tip
Stanley Park Seawall Cycle — Vancouver at 6:30 am
The 22 km seawall around Stanley Park is one of the world's great urban coastal walks — it can be cycled in 90 minutes or walked in 4–5 hours. The key decision: cycle the entire loop (full experience) or walk the western section (Prospect Point overlook, the Lions Gate Bridge, the totem poles at Brockton Point) and take a ferry or bus back. At 6:30 am in May: the seawall is occupied by local cyclists, runners, and dog walkers — and you. The mountains, the water, the city, the forest.
Insider tip
Old Quebec at 6am — The Cobblestone City
The walls of Old Quebec at 6am: the ramparts are publicly accessible 24 hours. Walk the full circuit of the fortification walls (4.6km, approximately 90 minutes at a relaxed pace, free). The wall walk gives sequential views: the St. Lawrence River, the Château Frontenac from above, the Plains of Abraham, and the Lower Town far below. In May at 6 am: approximately 8 people on the wall at any one time. Cost: Free · Funicular (Lower Town ↔ Upper Town): CAD 4 one way.
Insider tip
Poutine in Montreal — La Banquise at 11pm
La Banquise (994 Rachel Est, Montreal) is open 24 hours and serves 30+ varieties of poutine. The classic: French fries + fresh Quebec cheese curds (they squeak when you bite — that specific sound is the quality indicator) + hot gravy. In Montreal at 11 pm: the Plateau neighbourhood is still active, La Banquise has a short queue, and the poutine is exactly what it is supposed to be. Budget: CAD 15–18/large portion. This is the most specifically Montreal food experience available at midnight in Canada.
Insider tip
CN Tower Glass Floor — Confronting Heights in Toronto
The CN Tower (553m, completed 1976, formerly the world's tallest free-standing structure until 2010) has a glass floor section at the main observation level (346m) — 5cm-thick glass through which you can see the ground, or in this case, Lake Ontario, 346 metres below. The experience: you step onto it, look down, and your animal brain tells your logical brain that this is not acceptable. Most visitors stay for 30–60 seconds before stepping back. The view from the windows (360° Toronto skyline, Lake Ontario, the Toronto Islands) is genuinely extraordinary at any time of day.
Insider tip
Banff Wildlife — Bears, Elk, and Bighorn Sheep
Banff National Park has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in accessible wilderness in North America. May is when wildlife emerges from winter locations: grizzly bears (foraging along lower-altitude meadows near the Bow Valley Parkway, the parallel historic highway to the Trans-Canada), black bears (common near the Icefields Parkway), elk (frequently seen at dawn and dusk near the Banff townsite — actual elk walking through the town at 6am is a normal occurrence in May), and bighorn sheep (at the base of Mount Norquay, routinely visible from the road). None of these are managed encounters — they are wild animals in their ecosystem.
Insider tip
Granville Island Public Market — Vancouver's Daily Food Court
Granville Island (a former industrial peninsula under the Granville Street Bridge in Vancouver) was converted in the 1970s to a public market, artisan studios, and cultural venues. The Public Market (open daily) is the finest urban food market in Canada — fresh BC salmon and halibut, local Vancouver Island cheese, freshly baked bread, Japadog (Japanese-style hot dogs), and the full range of Pacific Northwest food.

Advice
Do not book a coach tour to Niagara Falls from Toronto — the GO Train is CAD 17 vs. CAD 80–120 for a coach tour covering the same journey. Same time, 5–7x cheaper. Spend the money difference on the Maid of the Mist instead. - Day 3Toronto Deep + Fly to Vancouver

Canada Popular — 12 Days (East Coast + West Coast + Rockies)
- Day 1Arrive Toronto
CN Tower sunset · Distillery District.
Advice
The eastern section (Toronto → Ottawa → Montreal → Quebec City) is fully accessible by Via Rail — no flights required. The Via Rail corridor is comfortable, scenic, and significantly cheaper than flying for the 4-city eastern leg. The train journey from Montreal to Quebec City specifically (3 hours, passing through the Quebec countryside as the French-language landscape takes over) is one of the finer rail journeys in eastern North America. - Day 2Niagara Falls
GO Train · Maid of the Mist · Falls View.

7am Lake Louise · Icefields Parkway to Peyto Lake · return Calgary.

Canada Complete — 16 Days (Full Country)
- Day 1Toronto (Arrival)CN Tower · Distillery District · Lake Ontario waterfront · ROM evening if time permits.
Advice
The Victoria addition (Day 10) — BC Ferry from Tsawwassen (south of Vancouver) to Swartz Bay (outside Victoria, 1.5 hours across the Strait of Georgia) — gives the most genteel Canadian city experience. Victoria is essentially an English-heritage city with the finest public gardens in Canada and the finest afternoon tea tradition outside England. The Butchart Gardens in May (spring plantings) are genuinely extraordinary.
- Day 2Toronto + NiagaraNiagara Falls day trip · Maid of the Mist · Queen Victoria Park · ROM + Kensington Market on return.
- Day 3OttawaTulip Festival (May) / Parliament Hill, National Gallery.
- Day 4MontrealOld Montreal, Notre-Dame, Mount Royal, Plateau food.

Canada Travel Tips
Canadian sales tax (HST/GST) of 5–15% is added at the till, not listed on price tags — prices in restaurants, shops, and attractions are displayed pre-tax; budget 15% additional on all priced items.
Moraine Lake and Lake Louise now require advance reservations for the Parks Canada shuttle (April–October) — previously accessible by car, private vehicle access is restricted during peak season; book at reservation.pc.gc.ca in March for summer dates.
Canadian wilderness has active bear populations — Parks Canada requires bear spray (available at park outfitters, not airport security) for backcountry hiking in Banff, Jasper, and Kootenay parks; know how to use it before entering the trail.
Winter driving in Canada — road conditions below -10°C with ice and snow require winter tyres (mandatory in BC, Quebec); rental cars come with winter tyres October–April in most provinces, but verify before taking the vehicle.
Canadians queue patiently — at Tim Hortons, airport check-in, or any public service; cutting queues or pushing is genuinely unusual behaviour that will draw comment.
Tipping in Canada is mandatory culture — 15% minimum at sit-down restaurants, 10% at fast casual; service staff earn below living wage base pay, and tips are part of the contractual income structure.
Fake "Canada Immigration" calls — Indian diaspora in particular are targeted by phone scammers claiming to be Canadian Border Services; CBSA never calls demanding immediate payment; hang up and report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
Overpriced Niagara Falls "experience" packages — gondola + behind-the-falls + boat are all individual purchases; bundled packages sold by hotel front desks are always more expensive than buying at the Niagara Parks Commission ticket office.
Rental car fuel rip-off — never accept the "pre-purchase fuel" option where the company charges for a full tank you may not use; return the car full from the nearest gas station.
What is worth it,
and what to avoid.

- Maid of the MistMay Peak Flow . The only way to experience Niagara Falls at sensory scale. The view from Queen Victoria Park is beautiful. Standing below Horseshoe Falls at 168,000 cubic metres/minute is a different experience category.
- Lake Louise at 7am. The turquoise glacial lake that no photograph adequately represents. At 7am in May: 40 people. At 10am: 400. The early start is the entire difference between a meaningful experience and a crowd management exercise.
- Ottawa Tulip FestivalMay. 1 million tulips, world's largest tulip festival, along a canal in Canada's capital. Completely free. One of the finest free public spectacles in North America. Only in May.
- Via Rail Eastern Corridor. The Toronto → Ottawa → Montreal → Quebec City train corridor is significantly cheaper, equally fast, and more comfortable than flying the same sectors. The Quebec countryside from the train window is part of the experience.
- Old Quebec Inside the Walls at 6am. The only walled city north of Mexico. At 6am: the cobblestones, the shuttered shops, the Château Frontenac, the river below. 8 people. At 10am: 800 tourists. Same wall, same 6am alarm.
- Stanley Park Seawall Cycle at 6:30 am. The finest urban coastal walk in Canada, with mountains, water, city, and temperate rainforest all simultaneously visible. At 6:30am in May: locals and you.
- Parks Canada Discovery Pass. Covers unlimited access to all Parks Canada sites for one year. For a Banff + Jasper + Icefields Parkway itinerary of 5+ days, the annual pass saves CAD 35–50 over daily passes.
- Taking a coach tour to Niagara Falls from TorontoTour buses cost CAD 80–120 per person. The GO Train costs CAD 17. Same 2-hour journey time. The difference is ₹4,410–₹7,210 per person you can spend on the Maid of the Mist and lunch. There is no meaningful advantage to a coach tour.
- Driving to Moraine Lake by private car (June–October)Moraine Lake Road is closed to private vehicles June–October. Access is only by Parks Canada shuttle (CAD 16 return, book in advance). Multiple tourists discover this at the road closure barrier every day in summer.
- Not checking the Parks Canada Discovery Pass economicsThe daily pass is CAD 21.50/person. The annual Discovery Pass is CAD 72.25/person. For any Banff + Jasper itinerary of more than 3 days, the Discovery Pass is cheaper. Buy at the park gate on arrival — but calculate first.
- Spending only 1 night in Quebec CityQuebec City is a 2-night minimum destination. The 6am wall walk, the Lower Town morning market, the Plains of Abraham, and a Quebecois dinner all together require two full days. The 1-night visit produces the Château Frontenac photograph and not much else.
- Driving the Icefields Parkway in under 4 hoursThe Icefields Parkway has 100 glaciers visible from the road. Driving it in 3 hours to "get to Jasper" means passing 98 of them at highway speed. Allow the full day. The Peyto Lake overlook alone deserves 45 minutes. The drive IS the experience.
- Lynn Canyon vs. Capilano budget decision without checkingLynn Canyon Suspension Bridge (free) is a genuinely good North Vancouver outdoor experience. Capilano (CAD 62) is significantly more dramatic and longer. Both are valid choices — the budget decision should be conscious.
- Attempting the Banff–Jasper Icefields Parkway drive without a full tankThere is only one fuel stop on the entire 232km Icefields Parkway (Saskatchewan River Crossing, approximately halfway). Fill the tank in Banff before departing and again at Saskatchewan River Crossing.
- Eating every meal at restaurant in Canada without grocery strategyCanadian restaurant prices are high (CAD 18–30 ≈ ₹1,260–₹2,100 per main). Canadian supermarkets (Loblaws, Sobeys, IGA) have excellent prepared food sections. One grocery meal per day saves CAD 25–40 per person per day.
