About Italy

Italy, your way.
With time for what matters.

Italy is a 301,000 sq km peninsula — and the only country on Earth where almost every kilometre of it contains something worth stopping for. In August 2025, I spent three weeks moving from Rome (Colosseum at 7am before the heat arrived, Vatican booked 8 weeks ahead, Trastevere for dinner because nobody eats early in Rome) to Florence (Uffizi at 9am opening, Michelangelo's David — which is genuinely larger and more extraordinary than any photograph suggests — and the best gelato of my life at Gelateria dei Neri) to Venice (arriving during a thunderstorm at 8pm, the Grand Canal completely deserted, the most beautiful arrival I have had in any city) to the Amalfi Coast.

Key Highlights

Is Italy Worth Visiting in 2026?

Yes — absolutely. I visited Italy in August 2025 across a complete circuit from Rome to Sicily, and came back with two honest observations: first, Italy is extraordinary in a way that its reputation genuinely earns; second, August is the hardest possible month to visit Italy well. The heat is real (Rome hit 41°C during my stay), the crowds are real, and everything requires advance booking weeks or months ahead. This guide covers both how extraordinary Italy is and how to navigate it without the August mistakes I made and corrected over the course of the trip.

Why visit

Why Visit Italy

Why Italy in 2026? Because Italy is the only country that delivers art, food, history, and landscape at world-class level simultaneously — and because it is genuinely more affordable than France, Switzerland, or Scandinavia once you are there. The flights and the visa are the biggest costs; after that, pasta costs ₹900, espresso costs ₹135, and walking through the streets of Rome costs nothing.

In August 2025, I arrived in Rome at 6:30am from a flight from Mumbai. By 7am, I was standing at the Colosseum. There were approximately 12 other people there — all photographers, all with the same early-morning strategy. By 9am, there were 3,000 people. By 11am, the queue was 400 metres long. This is the August Italy lesson: every famous thing in this country is extraordinary, and every famous thing in this country is accessible in the first 90 minutes of the day and genuinely miserable between 11am and 5pm. I reorganised my entire Italy trip around this principle after Day 2: 6:30am departures, major sites by 10am, lunch and rest 12pm–4pm, evening culture and dinner 5pm–midnight. Italy in August, reorganised this way, was close to perfect.

The Uffizi Gallery at 9am opening with advance tickets: I spent 4 hours with Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus" in a room with 8 other people. The same room at noon had 200. Michelangelo's David at 9am: I stood 3 metres from it for 20 uninterrupted minutes. Venice arriving during a thunderstorm at 8pm: the Grand Canal with nobody on it, rain on the water, lightning over the lagoon, the Basilica lit. Positano at 5:30am: the only sound was a scooter starting somewhere above on the cliff road.

Top 8 Places to Visit in Italy 2026

Rome — The Eternal City01 / Place

Rome — The Eternal City

The Colosseum at 7am. I booked the first entry slot — 9am was the official opening but early guided tour tickets allow 7am access. 12 people at the Colosseum. Standing in the arena floor (a recent restoration has reopened the arena level for visitors), looking up at the tiers, with the Roman Forum visible through the arched entrance ahead — and no one in the way of the view. By the time I left at 9:30am, the entrance queue was 200 people long. That 2.5-hour gap is the difference between the Colosseum being the most extraordinary historical experience of your life and a crowded queue with a famous thing in the background. Rome (3 million people, capital of Italy since 1871, capital of the Roman Empire since ~27 BC) contains: the Colosseum (72 AD), the Roman Forum, the Vatican (1.1 billion Catholics' spiritual headquarters), the Pantheon (125 AD, free entry), the Trevi Fountain (1762, free), the Borghese Gallery (one of the world's finest Baroque art collections — Bernini sculptures, Caravaggio paintings, book months ahead), and the neighbourhood of Trastevere (medieval alleyways, Rome's most authentic dining neighbourhood). Cost: Colosseum + Roman Forum + Palatine Hill: €16–26 (≈ ₹1,440–₹2,340) · Vatican Museums + Sistine: €20–27 (≈ ₹1,800–₹2,430) · Trevi Fountain: Free · Rome Metro single: €1.50 (≈ ₹135) · Hotels: €80–200/night (≈ ₹7,200–₹18,000) in August. Mistake to Avoid: Eating near the Colosseum or Vatican. The restaurants within 300 metres of both are consistently among the worst-value tourist restaurants in Italy.
Florence — Renaissance Capital02 / Place

Florence — Renaissance Capital

Michelangelo's David is 5.17 metres tall. Photographs do not convey this. Standing at the base of it in the Galleria dell'Accademia at 9am with advance tickets — one of the 8 other people in the room — looking at the marble anatomy of a 5-metre human figure carved by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504 when he was 26 years old, is the most specific confrontation with human excellence I have had in any museum in any country. I have seen it described in every Italy travel article. None of them prepare you. The best gelato of my trip: Gelateria dei Neri, Pistachio + Dark Chocolate, went back three times. This is not hyperbole. I went back three times. Florence (360,000 people) is the capital of Tuscany and the Renaissance — Michelangelo's David, Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera (Uffizi Gallery), Brunelleschi's Duomo cupola (the engineering triumph of the 15th century), Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise (Baptistery), the Ponte Vecchio (the jewellery bridge, the only bridge not destroyed in WWII in Italy), and the Boboli Gardens. Cost: Uffizi Gallery: €25–30 (≈ ₹2,250–₹2,700) · Michelangelo's David: €16 (≈ ₹1,440) · Duomo Cupola Climb: €30 (≈ ₹2,700) · Piazzale Michelangelo view: Free · Hotels: €70–180/night (≈ ₹6,300–₹16,200). Mistake to Avoid: Not booking the Uffizi and Galleria dell'Accademia at least 4–6 weeks before your visit for August.
Venice — The Floating City03 / Place

Venice — The Floating City

I arrived in Venice at 8pm on a Thursday during a thunderstorm. The train from Florence took 2 hours; the journey from Santa Lucia station to the hotel was on foot with a rolling suitcase across stone bridges — the rain was warm and the Grand Canal was completely empty of tourist boats. The only sounds were rain on stone and water on stone. This — the 8pm, post-rain, first-hour arrival in Venice — was the most beautiful arrival I have had in any city. By 10am the next morning, St. Mark's Square had 4,000 people. The lesson: Venice rewards the early morning and the late evening. The middle hours are tourism management rather than travel. Venice: 400+ bridges, 150+ canals, 118 islands, no cars. Grand Canal, St. Mark's Basilica (Byzantine, 828 AD, free entry to basilica), Doge's Palace (Republic of Venice seat of power, €20), Rialto Bridge, Murano (glassblowing island, 20 minutes by vaporetto), Burano (lace-making island, coloured houses, photographers' favourite). In August 2026: Venice's day tripper fee applies on specific peak days — €5 (€10 last-minute). Overnight hotel guests are exempt. Cost: Vaporetto 24-hr pass: €25 (≈ ₹2,250) · Doge's Palace: €15–20 · Gondola (shared): €80/gondola (≈ ₹7,200) · Hotels: €120–250/night. Mistake to Avoid: Eating at any restaurant directly on a canal with tourists visible at the tables. The bacaro culture is the authentic Venice dining experience.
Amalfi Coast — UNESCO Cliff Towns04 / Place

Amalfi Coast — UNESCO Cliff Towns

Positano at 5:30am, August 2025. I had set an alarm for 5am specifically for this. The town occupies a vertical cliff — houses stacked from the shoreline to 500 metres above sea level — and in August the cliffs are full of tourists by 8am. At 5:30am: the ferry workers preparing the first boats, the fishermen returning, the specific amber-pink light hitting the cliff houses before the sun is above the hill behind them, and the only other humans in the small beach piazza were two local men having an argument about football. The argument was in Italian, in Positano, at 5:30am, with that light. This specific combination is what August Italy gives you in the first two hours of the day. Amalfi Coast (50km of cliffs on the Sorrentine Peninsula, UNESCO World Heritage): Positano (cliff town of pink and white houses, the most photographed town in Italy), Amalfi (mediaeval town with a cathedral, 9th century Arab-Norman architecture), Ravello (mountaintop village with Wagner connections and Villa Rufolo gardens — used as a model for Klingsor's garden in Parsifal), Praiano. Access: train or bus to Sorrento (50 min from Naples) + ferry along the coast. Cost: Ferry Sorrento → Positano: €12–18 · Ravello Villa Rufolo garden: €7 · Hotels Positano: €150–500+/night in August · Budget option: base in Sorrento or Salerno. Mistake to Avoid: Staying in Positano in August without booking 3–4 months ahead. Base in Sorrento and day-trip.
Tuscany — Wine, Hills, and Cypress Avenues05 / Place

Tuscany — Wine, Hills, and Cypress Avenues

I rented a car in Siena for two days and drove the Chianti wine road between Florence and Siena. Rolling hills with cypress avenues that you have seen in every Tuscan postcard — they are real. They look exactly like that. The wine at Badia a Coltibuono (a functioning 11th-century monastery turned winery — tasting €25, ≈ ₹2,250, extraordinary) tasted like it had grown in that specific hillside landscape, which it had. The agriturismo (farmhouse with rooms) I stayed in had a pool overlooking the valley and cost €120/night (≈ ₹10,800). This is what Tuscany delivers: a specific, complete, sensory coherence between landscape, food, wine, and accommodation that no other Italian region replicates in the same way. Tuscany: Florence (3 days — city), Chianti wine country (2 days — car), Siena (medieval city, Piazza del Campo horse race track, stunning), San Gimignano (hilltop town with 14 medieval towers), Montalcino (Brunello di Montalcino wine, the finest Italian red), Montepulciano (another hilltop wine town), Val d'Orcia (UNESCO landscape — the cypress avenue rolling hills). Cost: Car rental: €40–80/day · Chianti wine tasting at estate: €15–40/person · San Gimignano entry: Free · Val d'Orcia: Free · Agriturismo: €80–200/night. Mistake to Avoid: Visiting San Gimignano and Siena on the same day from Florence by tour bus. Siena alone deserves a full day.

Best 10 Things to Do in Italy 2026

01
Must do

Colosseum at 7am — The Dawn Strategy

The earliest entry slot at the Colosseum (standard opening is 9am, but early-morning guided tours allow 7am access) gives you the arena floor level with 10–12 people in the entire 50,000-seat amphitheatre. The same structure at 10am has 3,000 people and a 2-hour queue for walk-ups. I stood on the restored arena floor level — looking up at the 4 tiers of stone seating, through the arched entrance at the Roman Forum beyond — for 20 uninterrupted minutes. This is the Colosseum. The 9am version is the Colosseum minus those 20 minutes. Cost: €16–26 (≈ ₹1,440–₹2,340) · Early-morning guided access: €35–55 (≈ ₹3,150–₹4,950). Booking: ticketcolosseo.it or colosseo.it — book minimum 6 weeks ahead for August.
Insider tip
Book the Colosseum + Roman Forum + Palatine Hill combined ticket (all three included in the base price). The Roman Forum at 8am — the temples and columns of the ancient civic centre of Rome, with almost nobody else there and the morning light — is as extraordinary as the Colosseum itself. Don't: Queue for walk-up tickets in August — not worth 2+ hours of Italian summer heat.
02
Must do

Uffizi Gallery — Botticelli at 9am

The Uffizi opens at 8:15am. The advance ticket + earliest slot gives you Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus" and "Primavera" in Room 10–14 with approximately 8–15 people. By 11am, the same rooms have 150–200 people. I spent 4 hours in the Uffizi on a Tuesday in August. The first 90 minutes were genuinely extraordinary; the last 2.5 hours were extraordinary but increasingly crowded. The reverse chronological decision — start with the most famous rooms at the earliest slot — is the correct Uffizi strategy. Cost: €25–30 (≈ ₹2,250–₹2,700) · uffizi.it online booking.
Insider tip
The Uffizi is enormous (45 rooms, 1,700 paintings). You cannot see everything well in one visit. Pick 5–6 rooms you specifically want and spend proper time in them. The Botticelli rooms (10–14), the Leonardo da Vinci room (35), Raphael's portrait of Pope Leo X (66), and Caravaggio's Medusa (90) are my strongest recommendations. Must Do (Florence). Don't: Go without advance booking in any summer month.

Vatican Museums + Sistine Chapel — Book 8 Weeks Ahead

Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling (1508–1512, age 33–37) is 500 sq metres of fresco — 300+ figures, the Creation of Adam (the most reproduced image in Western art), the Last Judgment on the altar wall. The Vatican Museums lead through 7km of galleries (Gallery of Maps, Raphael Rooms, Etruscan Museum) to the Sistine. Entry: €20–27 online. In August: all slots fill 6–8 weeks in advance. St. Peter's Basilica (free to enter, the world's largest church) is a separate entrance and free — but climb the cupola (Michelangelo's, €8) for the finest view of Rome from above. Cost: Vatican Museums + Sistine: €20–27 (≈ ₹1,800–₹2,430) · St. Peter's: Free · Cupola: €8 (≈ ₹720).
Insider tip
Book the 8am entry slot — Vatican Museums are significantly quieter in the first 2 hours than midday. Do the Sistine Chapel first (it is near the entrance of the museums). The exit from the Sistine Chapel leads directly into St. Peter's Basilica — take this exit rather than backtracking through the museums. Must Do (Rome). Don't: Book a tour-operator Vatican visit without comparing the price to the official Vatican website (museumvatican.va).

Must do

Michelangelo's David — The Standard

Michelangelo's David (1501–1504, marble, 5.17m) is in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. It is larger than every photograph suggests, and the specific quality of Michelangelo's treatment of marble anatomy — the veins in the hand, the tension in the neck, the right foot slightly weighted differently from the left — is visible only at close range in person. I saw it at 9am with advance tickets. Entry: €16. Booking: galleriaaccademiafirenze.it. Cost: €16 (≈ ₹1,440) · Advance booking essential for August.
Insider tip
The hall containing David also contains Michelangelo's four "Prisoners" — unfinished figures emerging from blocks of marble, intentionally incomplete (or left that way by circumstance). These four figures — often overlooked because David is the destination — are among the most interesting works in the museum. Allow 30 minutes with them separately from the David visit. Must Do (Florence). Don't: Think you've seen enough from the photos. You haven't.

22 Travel Tips

Money
Italy Schengen Visa: €90 (≈ ₹8,100) per adult + VFS service charge ₹631 + mandatory travel insurance (€30,000 minimum). Total ≈ ₹10,000–₹12,000/person. Apply via VFS Global India (10 cities). Processing: 15 working days standard, 30–45 days peak (May–August). For August travel: apply by mid-June minimum. Approval rate ~89%. Valid Schengen = no separate Italy visa. Source: VFS Global official · VisaBeat Dec 2025.
Money
1 EUR = ₹90 INR (retail/forex card rate, May 2026). Cards widely accepted everywhere — restaurants, museums, trains, shops. Carry €100–200 cash for small markets, rural areas, churches with collection. Do not exchange at airport forex counters — terrible rates. Use ATMs or forex card loaded in India.
Money
Train tickets: book 4–8 weeks ahead. Rome–Florence (€19 advance vs. €85 same-day). Florence–Venice (€25 advance vs. €90 same-day). Book at trenitalia.com or italotreno.it. Both accept Indian Visa/Mastercard (enable international transactions first).
Money
Pre-book all major attractions for August: Colosseum (ticketcolosseo.it), Vatican (museumvatican.va), Uffizi (uffizi.it), David/Accademia (galleriaaccademiafirenze.it), Last Supper (vivaticket.com), Borghese Gallery (galleriaborghese.it). Budget ₹15,000–₹20,000 per person for attraction tickets over 10 days.
Money
Trattoria dining strategy: Two courses (pasta + secondo) + house wine carafe + water + dessert: €25–40/person. Tourist restaurants within sight of famous landmarks: same dishes, €40–60. Look for restaurants with handwritten daily menus (specials based on what the market had that morning), no photographs on the menu, and Italian-speaking customers.
Money
Standing espresso at the bar: €1–1.50 (≈ ₹90–₹135). Italian coffee culture: espresso is drunk standing at the bar in 60 seconds. A macchiato (espresso with a spot of steamed milk) costs €1–1.80. Sitting at a table: same coffee can cost €3–5. Stand at the bar.
Money
Venice budget management: Venice is 20–30% more expensive than Rome or Florence for equivalent accommodation. Base in Mestre (Venice mainland, 15 minutes by train, significantly cheaper) for 2 nights and take the train into Venice, OR book Venice accommodation 4–6 months ahead for the best rates on the island.
Safety
Italy is safe for Indian tourists. Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Naples — standard travel precautions only. Pickpocketing is the primary concern, specifically in crowded tourist areas (Colosseum, Vatican, Venice water buses, Naples train station). Money belt or zipped inner-pocket wallet recommended for these areas.
