About Georgia

Georgia, your way.
With time for what matters.

Georgia is a South Caucasus country bordered by Russia to the north, Turkey and Armenia to the south, Azerbaijan to the east, and the Black Sea to the west — geographic intersection of Eastern Europe, Western Asia, and the Caucasus mountain system. Continuously inhabited and continuously creative for 8,000 years: oldest gold jewellery in the world (5th millennium BC), oldest winemaking tradition on Earth (8,000-year qvevri amphora tradition), specific alphabet and literary tradition uninterrupted since the 4th century AD. 365-day visa-free access for Indians — the longest free access Georgia offers any nationality.

Key Highlights

Is Georgia Worth Visiting in 2026?

Georgia is the most complete value-for-money destination in Europe's orbit — a country with Caucasian mountain peaks above 5,000m, the world's oldest winemaking tradition (8,000 years, the qvevri clay amphora wine buried underground), a medieval capital city with sulfur baths still functioning below the old town, and a visa-free policy that gives Indians 365 days without any application or fee. I visited in March 2023 and found Georgia at its quietest and most atmospheric — the Gergeti Trinity Church above Kazbegi surrounded by fresh snow with the Mount Kazbek glacier visible directly behind it, the Tbilisi old town in the early spring cold with the sulfur bath steam rising from the Abanotubani district rooftops, and the Kakheti wine country quiet and open for the amber wine of the region. Georgia in March is Georgia without the summer crowd at 30-40% lower prices.

Why visit

Why Visit Georgia

Georgia sits between the Greater Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea, with a 3,000-year-old alphabet, amber wine (an 8,000-year-old tradition), and mountains that rival Switzerland's at a fraction of the cost. Tbilisi's old town is a mix of Orthodox churches, Persian-era bathhouses, ornate ironwork balconies, and world-class natural wine bars within 2km. Kazbegi's Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170m, with Mount Kazbek (5,047m) directly behind it, is one of the most dramatic single-landscape photographs from the Caucasus. Svaneti's medieval tower villages have been inhabited for over 1,000 years. Visa-free for Indians (1 year). No direct flights from India; connect via Istanbul or Dubai. Davit Gareja cave monastery complex on the Azerbaijan border contains 6th-century frescoes across 19 cliff-carved monasteries in a semi-desert ridge — one of the most dramatically isolated early Christian heritage sites in the world.
Best time: May–October.

Key Features of Georgia

01
Gergeti Trinity Church
The 14th-century church at 2,170m sits on a spur directly below Mount Kazbek (5,047m). The March snow around the church and the winter-clear summit make this the most dramatically positioned single building in the Caucasus.
02
Old Tbilisi Sulfur Baths
The Abanotubani bathhouse district is built over natural sulfur springs in the Metekhi Gorge. A private sulfur bath at 38–40°C costs ₹400–800 equivalent — the most specific Tbilisi cultural institution, unchanged in character since the 16th century.
03
Kakheti Wine Region
Georgia has 8,000 years of continuous winemaking — the world's oldest — using qvevri, clay amphoras buried in the earth. March in Kakheti: the vines bare, the wine estate tours quiet, and the orange wine (the skin-contact white) at its most complex after winter barrel age.
04
Mtskheta
the former Georgian capital, 20km from Tbilisi — has the Jvari Monastery (6th century, on the hill above the river confluence — the most photographed Georgian church exterior) and the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Both are accessible in a half-day from Tbilisi.
05
Kazbegi
The mountain town at 1,740m is 3 hours from Tbilisi by the Georgian Military Highway. The 4WD track to the Gergeti Trinity Church above the town is the most dramatic single drive in the Caucasus.
06
Georgian Polyphonic Singing
The 2,500-year-old three-voice choral tradition is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage unique to Georgia. The Sunday liturgy at Sioni Cathedral in Tbilisi features the choir performing traditional sacred polyphony.

Gergeti Trinity Church — Mountain Church with Glacier Behind It

The Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba, 14th century, 2,170m altitude, on a basalt spur above the village of Stepantsminda) is the most photographed image in Georgian tourism — the medieval stone church on its triangular rocky pinnacle, the Mount Kazbek glacier (the Gergeti Glacier on the south face of Kazbek, 5,047m) rising directly behind it in the north. The specific Gergeti image works in every season: winter (snow on the spur, snow on Kazbek), spring (green meadows, glacier above), summer (clear air, the full mountain), autumn (the spur in gold). In March: the winter version — the snow on the approach path, the church in the snow, the glacier in the March mountain light. The approach: 45-minute walk from Stepantsminda village (path marked from village centre, ascent 450m, upper section requires grip shoes in March snow). Or 4WD option (GEL 20 return per person ≈ ₹580). Church interior open when priest present, 14th-century frescoes partially visible in candle light.
Tbilisi Old Town — 1,500 Years of Architecture02 / Place

Tbilisi Old Town — 1,500 Years of Architecture

The Tbilisi Old Town (district below the Narikala Fortress ridge, the Mtkvari River to the west, the Abanotubani to the southeast) concentrates 1,500 years of layered urban history in approximately 2km — the 6th-century Anchiskhati Basilica (oldest surviving church in Tbilisi, 6th-century basilica rebuilt 17th century, original proportions visible in nave), the 11th-century Metekhi Church (on cliff above river bend, equestrian statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali — 5th-century king who founded Tbilisi), the 16th-century Narikala Fortress (Persian-built fortress on ridge above old town, partially restored walls accessible by cable car from Rike Park or by foot), and the 19th-century carved wooden balcony architecture of Persian-influenced residential buildings (oriel windows, projecting wooden balconies, decorative carved screens). Bridge of Peace (2010 pedestrian bridge, bowtie-shaped, stainless steel and LED glass panels) is most photographed modern Tbilisi structure.
Abanotubani Sulfur Baths — Tbilisi's Original Reason for Existing03 / Place

Abanotubani Sulfur Baths — Tbilisi's Original Reason for Existing

The Abanotubani district ('bath district' in Georgian) is the neighbourhood of the hot sulfur springs that made Tbilisi — legend says King Vakhtang Gorgasali was hunting in 5th century when his falcon chased a pheasant into the spring, both birds emerged boiled, and the king recognised the value of the location and founded a city there. The springs are still there, still at 37-43°C, still sulfurous, still operational — the dome-roofed bathhouses built over the springs giving the Abanotubani its specific roofline (shallow brick domes punctuating street level, steam rising from ventilation slots). The bathhouse visit: any of 6-8 operating bathhouses in Abanotubani offer private cabin rental. Gulo's Thermal Spa and Royal Bath are most established. GEL 25-35/person/hour (₹725-1,015) for private cabin. Public bathing (gender-separated common areas) is GEL 3-5 (₹87-145). Specific sulfur bath experience: 42°C water, mineral sulfur smell, softer geothermally heated water absorbing into skin.
Mtskheta — Living Ancient Capital04 / Place

Mtskheta — Living Ancient Capital

Mtskheta (UNESCO World Heritage Site, 20km from Tbilisi, 30 minutes by marshrutka) The Ancient Capital The spiritual capital of Georgia (15km from Tbilisi) — the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (the most sacred Georgian church, built on the site where Christ's robe is said to be buried), the Jvari Monastery (the 6th-century cliff-top monastery that gave Georgia's most recognisable single heritage silhouette), and the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers visible from the monastery viewpoint.
Kakheti Wine Country — Sighnaghi, Telavi, Qvevri05 / Place

Kakheti Wine Country — Sighnaghi, Telavi, Qvevri

Kakheti Wine Region: The world's oldest wine-making tradition (8,000 years, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) — the qvevri clay amphora buried in the earth, the amber/orange wine from skin-contact white grapes, the Alaverdi Monastery winery (the most historically continuous wine production in Georgia), and the Signagi wine town (the walled hilltop town above the Alazani valley). Most specifically rewarding in the September-October harvest.

Gergeti Trinity Church — Walk Up at Dawn

Arrive in Stepantsminda evening before (overnight at Stepantsminda guesthouse, GEL 50-100/night ≈ ₹1,450-2,900). Depart at 6:30am (walk: 45 minutes, 450m ascent, sun rising as you reach church). Summit at 7:15am with morning light on Kazbek glacier.
Insider tip
6:30am Gergeti walk in March gives church at dawn without day-trip crowd from Tbilisi (marshrutkas from Tbilisi arrive Stepantsminda 12pm-2pm, 4WD taxis from village start running 9am). Overnight in Stepantsminda is the only way to get church at dawn. Day tip: 6:30am Gergeti walk (45 min, grip shoes, path marked from village bridge) · Church 7:15am (dawn light on glacier, 4-8 people maximum at this hour) · Descent by 9am · Village breakfast (guesthouse breakfast: eggs, Georgian bread, local honey, matsoni yoghurt) · Marshrutka return Tbilisi 11am or continue to Gudauri.

Must do

Abanotubani Sulfur Bath — 8pm Private Cabin

Walk to Abanotubani from Tbilisi Old Town (10 minutes; follow dome rooflines or ask for 'bani'). Book a private cabin at Gulo's Thermal Spa or Royal Bath.

Insider tip

Best Abanotubani sequence: 30 minutes in a hot sulfur bath (42°C soak), then a cold plunge (cold tap fills a smaller basin — a 30-second cold plunge after the hot bath, the specific temperature contrast that bathhouse tradition recommends), then 10 minutes back in hot water. Repeat. Total time: 1 hour. Specific physical state at end: most relaxed version of yourself available in Tbilisi.

03
Must do

Kakheti Wine Cellar + Sighnaghi — Full Day from Tbilisi

Marshrutka from Samgori Metro station to Sighnaghi. Sighnaghi in the morning (walled town, Alazani Valley view from the wall, Bodbe Monastery adjacent — grave of St. Nino, a 4th-century female saint who converted Georgia to Christianity). Then Telavi for a winery visit and amber wine tasting.

Insider tip

Signagi Town Hall offers a unique service — 24-hour wedding registration ('City of Love' marketing is based on this). Visiting couples can register their marriage in Sighnaghi at any hour. This is a REAL Georgian government registration, not a symbolic ceremony.

04
Must do

Narikala Fortress + Old Town Walk — Cable Car Option

Narikala Fortress (16th-century Persian-era fortress on a ridge above the old town) is accessible by cable car from Rike Park or by a 20-minute walk from the old town. Fortress walls (partially restored) give an aerial view of the old town below, the Mtkvari River, Abanotubani dome rooftops, and the Bridge of Peace.

Insider tip

The cable car from Rike Park to Narikala offers the best aerial view of Tbilisi — the gondola passes directly over the Mtkvari River (with a view down to the river), the old town is visible to the right, and the Narikala fortress walls are visible as the gondola approaches the summit station. GEL 2.50 return is the most scenic 73 rupees available in the vicinity of Europe.

Georgia Travel Tips

Money
365-day visa-free for Indians — the LONGEST free access Georgia offers any nationality. Valid Indian passport (6 months minimum validity) + arrival at TBS airport = entry with 365-day stamp. No application, no fee, no booking confirmation required. No proof of funds routinely checked. The most efficient European-adjacent visa for Indian travellers.
Money
1 GEL = ₹29 — Georgia is one of the most affordable European-adjacent destinations for Indians. Full restaurant meal with Georgian wine: GEL 40-60 (≈ ₹1,160-1,740). Private sulfur bath cabin: GEL 30/person/hour (≈ ₹870). Carry GEL cash for Kazbegi, marshrutka fares, market purchases, and small restaurants. ATMs Tbilisi abundant; Kazbegi has 2 ATMs not always functional. Withdraw GEL in Tbilisi before mountain journey.
Money
Bolt taxi in Tbilisi — Bolt app works throughout Tbilisi (GEL 5-15 per trip ≈ ₹145-435). More reliable than flagging street taxis and with upfront price display. Download before arriving. Georgian Military Highway private car: for Kazbegi day/overnight, private car (GEL 150-200 for full car = ₹4,350-5,800, split between 4 people) gives flexibility to stop at Ananuri, Gudauri viewpoint, and photograph mountain road. Marshrutka (GEL 15/person) is budget option but doesn't stop for photographs.
Money
March pricing — Tbilisi hotels 30-40% CHEAPER than June-September peak. Gudauri lift passes at end-of-season rates. Kakheti wineries with fewer group tours = more personalised tasting. Duty-free Georgian wine: Tbilisi International Airport duty-free priced at production-cost levels (GEL 15-30 per bottle ≈ ₹435-870). Buy maximum allowable on departure — same wine in India via import channels costs 5-8x more.
Safety
Georgia is very safe — consistently among safer European-vicinity countries. Low violent crime. 112 emergency number covers police, ambulance, fire. Kazbegi road safety in winter: Georgian Military Highway maintained and generally safe in March. Drive only in DAYLIGHT hours between Gudauri and Kazbegi (sharp curves, no guardrails in sections). Marshrutka drivers know road in all conditions.
Safety
Gergeti Trinity Church in snow — grip ESSENTIAL — upper section of Gergeti walk (above 1,800m) has ice and compacted snow in March. Grip shoes or microspikes (available for rent in Stepantsminda village at GEL 5/day ≈ ₹145) are correct footwear. Do NOT attempt walk in smooth-soled shoes in March snow. Underestimating Kazbegi cold: Stepantsminda March -5 to 5°C. Gergeti exposed section drops to -8°C with wind. Thermal layers + wind jacket + grip shoes MANDATORY.
Safety
Sulfur bath temperature check — Abanotubani baths vary 37°C-43°C depending on spring source and bathhouse. Hottest baths (43°C) can be overwhelming first 5 minutes — ask for temperature before entering and request temperature reduction (most have cold water inlet) if needed. Medical access: Tbilisi has adequate private hospital infrastructure (Aversi Clinic, GeoHospital). Kazbegi has small medical post. Travel insurance with medical coverage essential.
Etiquette
Orthodox church dress — cover shoulders and knees inside all Georgian Orthodox churches (Gergeti, Svetitskhoveli, Jvari, Anchiskhati). Headscarves for women available at church entrance. Remove hats on entry. Photography in churches: most Georgian Orthodox churches permit photography (without flash). During active service: wait for service to end, stand to side, photograph only when no priest is officiating directly ahead of camera.

What is worth it,
and what to avoid.

Last reviewed 2026-05-11.

Genuinely worth it
  • Gergeti Trinity Church at dawn (GEL 20 4WD return ≈ ₹580)
14th-century church at 2,170m with Mount Kazbek glacier behind it, in snow, at 7am with 4 other people. Single most specific Georgia image, before day-trip crowd. Requires overnight in Stepantsminda.
  • Abanotubani sulfur bath private cabin (GEL 30/person/hour ≈ ₹870)
Geothermal spring that gave Tbilisi its name, still operating after 1,500 years. 42°C sulfur water in private cabin. Most effective and most specific Tbilisi recovery experience.
  • Narikala cable car (GEL 2.50 return ≈ ₹73)
Best aerial view of Tbilisi's old town, Mtkvari River, and fortress for ₹73. No comparable aerial city view at this price anywhere in Europe.
  • Kakheti amber wine tasting (GEL 20-40 ≈ ₹580-1,160 for 4-6 wines)
8,000-year Georgian winemaking tradition in original qvevri form. Amber Rkatsiteli — the wine that preceded all other wine traditions.
